This is a brief analysis of Dokkodo, 21 Principles in the Path of Aloneness written by Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi, who began his career as a ronin (landless samurai) killed his first man when he was only 13. It is even said he may have done it with a wooden sword. Over the course of his life, he won over 60 duels, never losing once. Towards the end of his life he served as a retainer for a local Daimyo. He used this time to work on a series of books he would eventually publish, most popular of which was The Book of 5 Rings. A handbook for any inspiring swordsman of the time, and today, for martial artists throughout the world. The Dokkodo echoes many Stoic philosophies despite Musashi almost certainly having no exposure to it. It perfectly gives us insight into the similarities of Eastern and Western Philosophy. Despite difficult wording, in part due to translation, there is much to learn from this short work. We will be exploring Musashi more including an analysis of The Book of 5 Rings as we go forward.

The 1st Principle seemed very Stoic to me so I figured I’d analyze it from that angle, the Dokkodo is certainly very interesting and full of insight when pondered deeply.

@@thewarriorphilosopher I got myself into Stoicism in 2020 and since then I can only say that my character has improved. I am much stronger, able to put up with more shit and just overall I have more peace of mind. I wish for each and every man out there to seek strength and courage (by attacking adversities) in these full of feminized men society that we live in.

Just a suggestion, read about Prophet Muhammad, there are many sources you can find, but I’d suggest to start with “Islam and the destiny of a Man”. You won’t be disappointed and it’ll add a lot more to the existing idea of stoicism you already have.

To understand most of these you must experience them, understanding them as reassurance and a reminder to be consistent in good practices I’ve been making lots of big mistakes the past 5 or so years of my life. Toxic relationship / home, slight dependency on pills, liquor everyday, crashing my old car 2 times in 1 hour, and just recently totaling my dream car and receiving my 2nd DUI after only a few months of getting sentenced for my first. If you’ve read this comment this far I guess what I mean by all this is I know better and always have. Lots of time to think while walking everywhere with no car. All of these hit home for me I just lost touch with myself temporarily. If your feeling the same, as mentioned in this video every second and every day is a fresh opportunity. If we don’t have hardship in our life we can never truly learn or build character. Keep your head up, and just keep going one step after the other.
@Nastard2
@Nastard2 Жыл бұрын
I hear ya, brother. Got myself in similar trouble when I was a little younger. From having carelessly created that hardship for myself, I was able to take a path mentally (and often literally) that I otherwise wouldn't have for a year or so of my life. Changed everything for the better. Hang in there. If you feel like you want to improve, you already are.

Eloquently articulated. The spontaneity of life, both chemically and metaphysically, presents constant and inescapable chaos and disorder which hinders one’s ability to maintain their way. Oftentimes, a reminder like this is necessary so that we may rationalize our meaning and avoid a plunge into a frontier of overwhelming despair. We must find comfort in uncertainty and not allow ourselves to be engulfed by its anonymity. Cheers comrades, let us embrace our suffering nobly and smile at the face of death.

From a 42yr old man with a 22yr old son, i feel this video is solid advice, for anyone. The number one thing I've learnt, is there is nothing outside of myself that can make me, all the answers are found in deep searching and are within my grasp if it is what i desire. Never be afraid to express yourself, the things you have gone through have shaped you, and all the positive things about you have come from strength- this is who you are today, do not be afraid to assert the things you know to be right and righteous. Evil is allowed to take place when men do nothing. And to be a hero, to be heard- takes bravery, in just that moment. Be brave when you need to be, build yourself up to be strong, weak men are a danger to society.

Thanks for this video. I wanted a written copy of it for reference so I typed it out with some of my own wording of the precept explanations. Here it is for those who want to copy it as well. Enjoy. _The Dokkodo - Miyamoto Musashi_ *1. Accept everything just the way it is* -Rather than wish for a life without suffering, look for the strength to suffer well, and overcome. “Men are disturbed not by the events, but their opinions about their events”. - Epictetus *2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake* -Reject pleasures that bring only sort term gratification. What feels good usually is not good for you. Suffer today, and live tomorrow as a king among men. *3. Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling* -Take your time to consider a major decision. *4. Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world* -You are a small piece of a large whole. Only focusing on oneself will cause you to miss much of the wonder and knowledge the world has to offer. *5. Be detached from desire your whole life long* -Rather than allow desire to drive you, work towards the goals that you have set out for yourself. Practice gratitude for what you already have. *6. Do not regret what you have done* -Who you are today, is not who you are yesterday, nor who you will be tomorrow. All past experience is a teacher. *7. Never be jealous* -Compare yourself only to yourself yesterday. If a man has achieved something you want, rejoice, as this proves that it is possible. *8. Never let yourself be saddened by a separation* -Loss is a part of life. Redirect the grief into hard work and continue fulfilling your destiny. *9. Resentment and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself nor others* -Take responsibility for your situation and if you don’t like it, make changes. *10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love* -Instead, be guided by your principles. When love is right, it will find you. *11. In all things, have no preferences* -Be unbiased and open to learn from everything. *12. Be indifferent to where you live* -It is not where you live that matters, but how you live. The things you own end up owning you. *13. Do not pursue the taste of good food* -Overindulgence weakens the mind and body. Practice moderation in all things. *14. Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need* -Mindless accumulation of things weighs on your mental well-being. Therefore, gift things you no longer need to those who would use them. *15. Do not act following customary beliefs* -Those who follow the status quo will never change the world. *16. Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful* -Focus your time and effort on things that yield returns. *17. Do not fear death* -Allowing fear to determine one’s actions is true spiritual death. “Death is smiles at us all, all we can do is smile back.” -Marcus Aurelias *18. Do not seek to possess good or fiefs for your old age* -The only thing that survives your death is the impact you have left on the world. *19. Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help* -God has already given you all the tools you need to prevail. It is up to you alone to learn this. *20. You may abandon your own body, but you must preserve your honor* -Never sacrifice who you are and your principles for a temporary sense of safety. *21. Never stray from the way* -Be unshakable in your devotion to the path. Be disciplined, and even the strongest storm will fail to break you.

I appreciate the feedback! I keep trying to pick other music because I’ve used gymnopedie in a video before but it seems to go with narration nicely. We will definitely continue making similar videos such as a brief and then in depth analysis on the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. There’s so much knowledge out there and we’ll try to get to as much of it as we can!

Man, that Steve Jobs quote really hit home, one must seek in himself rather than worry about opinion that do not empower him "Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma-which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."

The way he fell means he was never in the right path, he knew how to fight but he was never a martial artist because he lacked the humbleness and the respect you learn through martial arts. But sadly we see a lot of that today.

@@thewarriorphilosopher After listening to two or three last I started to wonder if you do any combat sports? Any martial arts stuff? I hope you don't mind me asking, I am curious is all. I know that I am not a real solider fighting in wars and risking my life for any patriotic cause, but I was exposed to Mankind's first hobby warfare very early in my childhood. So, when I hear what you are saying, it reminds me there is still hope somewhere out there if this guy gets it. You helped remind me of some ideas I had dropped. Anyway, I could go on, but I am rambling, much respect comrade

@@RitaMcCloud Yes I have competed in multiple combat sports, I wrestled 4 years in high school after which I started Jiu Jitsu and MMA, I currently am a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu and have done 1 amateur MMA fight back in 2021 which I was blessed to have won. My co-host on the podcast also does martial arts and is a TKD black belt. I think that martial arts is a perfect method to control the inner aggression that exists in all human, and express it in a healthy way.

@@thewarriorphilosopher that's totally awesome that you have had the opportunities to experience those. I am sure you are right about channeling the aggression. I don't mean to compare them in any way at all on a physical taxing level, obviously combat in real life with ones own body vs another human is more demanding, but I since I enjoy combat and and competition 1v1 I am invested a good portion of my life into fighting games. I haven't been able to go to a. Tournament yet though. But a lot of what I have learned from fighting games can be brought over here to real fighting easily.
