Dolby Atmos Measurements & Calibration - REW & Audyssey MultEQ-X - Height Channels - Part 3

I move onto the height channels speakers with REW, The Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit from‪@joentell‬ and ‪@TechnoDad‬ and Audyssey's MultEQ-X Room Correction Software. I wanted to calibrate a system without using the internal test tones from REW. Luckily, we have a great Blu-ray Disc that archives this with full-range random pink noise, which is perfect for full-range measurements using an RTA in REW.
The height channels are incredibly important to get right, because having sounds move through the room requires an excellent speaker setup. Thankfully, because of being able import a full target curve we can now achieve perfect sound.
NOTE: I've also found and elegant fix to complete target curves. It requires some use of a spreadsheet; however, I explain how to use it.
This is using a new method of importing Target Curves using Audyssey's MultEQ-X. I'd like to shout to ‪@ocaudiophile‬ for giving me the idea that this was possible, and I wanted to see if it would work with the new Audyssey MultEQ-X update that allows you to import target curves now. He also gave me the idea of using a spreadsheet to change and complete target curves. Please check out his channel, he's obsessed with this:)

Thanks Joe. I'm very happy with this. Now I'm trying to EQ the subwoofer with Audyssey MultEQ-X, but some of the settings in the MultEQ-X app aren't correct. So might have to contact Audyssey about it.

Thank you for your video. I will try your method with my Denon X4700H and MultEQ-X in the next few days and I am very excited about the result. I would be very grateful if you would make another video where you use these method to calibrate your subwoofers without the MiniDSP.

@@hdmoviesource My calibration went very well. The system sounds significantly better than with the automatic calibration of MultEQ-X. It's the first time I can run the system without Dynamic EQ. I'm considering whether 1/48 smoothing might not produce even more details. I haven't tried it yet.

even more great content 😊 do you have atmos speakers 80 Crossover? Rolloff in taget curve in 60. Is it fullrange speaker? Why not rolloff after 80?

Good question. I crossover at 80hz yes. I rollover whenever the speaker goes into positive numbers. It helps the receiver/amplifier with power doing it that way. Now my receiver doesn't feel stretched. I honestly think this is the best way for bookshelves and a center speaker. The front pair Floorstanders you could maybe push more and get slightly more bass. You can cut the EQ just as it rises above the target curve. That way you can retain more bass for you mains. But they're the only speakers I do that with.

I ended up going with a 7.1.4 Auro setup like yourself with surround heights instead of rear. I do have a quick question, are your heights pointed directly at your MLP or are they pointed above your MLP like the Auro Spec calls out? Im wondering bc when I get to manually calibration, im wondering if i should measure, for eq, at the MLP or the Auro Spec callout above my MLP. Thoughts?

I angle all my speakers at 15 degrees off axis and I've found that this sounds the best Mike.

I plan to try this method when I have some free time during the holidays. I do have a question....you only use a single mic position? Do you think using this method but taking additional mic positions per speaker pair and then averaging them all would work or is it best to just use a single centered in listening area? I have a single row of 3 seats. I have a 2nd row but its almost never used so I only worry about the main row.

Ive tried mult measurement points, and it didn't sound good in any seat. But, used the main listening position and all 3 seats sound good. I personally prefer an MLP measurement because I think it sounds cleaner.

@@hdmoviesource Yeah, I think I'll. Try single mlp. My side surrounds are bipol/dipol which really shows up odd on RTA so need to figure out what to do about that.

When I go to export measurements as text..the text file I get has 3 columns instead of 2? (Freq SPL Phase). In your video I only see Freq and SPL.

Okay good, yeah I believe that is phase info from the measurement, not the calculation.

Buddy its normal to cross my front speakers to 200hz ??? If i cross them to 80 120 or 150 there are dips and my sub is a mess when i cross it to 200 the sub is clear and theres no dips between speakers and subs... Here to mention i have prime towers svs speakers... So what is your opinion??? Thank you

Good question. I find this can be up to the person listening to the system. I personally don't like to crossover above 80hz because I don't like the sound of that bass going to my subs. I think it makes the subwoofer sound too thick. You could try lifting the crossover a little and see if it clears up those dips. You could even try room treatment and see if those issues could be cleared up. For me, I allow for the speaker to not be absolutely perfect, because also see issues like that. I'm wondering if room treatment could help here.

@@hdmoviesource they told me to give delay to sub... 🤔 You believe this will work??? And also i have a question you leave your speaker to play deep as you show to calibration or i have to cutting it to make it flat from 100hz and down to low frequencys i mean with target curve flat..

@@kuriakos36 A sub delay may help improve phase and timing with the other speakers. I tend not to go too far with it, but it can definitely help yes. If you're speakers can only play to 100hz, I wouldn't try boosting too much more after that, so yes. Cam go flat, or 0, after that point.

@@hdmoviesource I'm sorry buddy and something else 🙂 when i put the target curve for eq and i use the reverse way the speaker frequency its not exactly at the target curve its like little up and down you believe for excellent target of the speaker to use eq to the eq section?? Or im gonna over eq the speaker?? What you suggest me to do??? Thank you again!!

It depends on how much you have to boost. I try not to boost over +6db
