Dolby Atmos vs DTS X

This is a video comparing both object-based surround sound audio formats Dolby Atmos and DTS X. I have an Onkyo TX-NR686 with a Roku Ultra streaming box. I am having trouble following how to get Dolby Atmos on a Netflix show. Do you do this through the box or the receiver.? I saw the Roku menu in the video but don’t know to access it. Thanks.

with atmos you need the height channels. but with dts x, we also need height channels?

The up-mixing by Dolby Surround (which I prefer over Neural X) is that good that I don't really care that a track isn't natively encoded/mixed into either Atmos or DTS: X. In fact, from the content I've watched, the up-mixing has quite often sounded better, provided the content you're watching has an excellent channel based sound-mix.

What up what do you think about the Dolby Vision update when ever we get it. And how will it work.The new marantz receivers are coming with IMAX isn't that like Auro 3D. I just got some Atmos dvds the the hell with IMAX . LOL

There has been a lot of changes lately, both the female and I have taken new jobs so that really put the brakes on the videos for a few weeks, but I would record 10-30 videos a month sometimes and never have the time to edit them or upload most of them. I have a lot of new and interesting things coming soon to the channel, including a new brand of power amps I have been wanting but in a different price range than normal. Definitely expecting some big changes soon on the channel though, and things like seating, raised seating and where romex and junction boxes are going to go...but finding a new house is what I really need for newer construction and in ceiling lights things like that.

My onkyo doesn't just upmix dolby signals to atmos. I have to watch a disc with atmos to get atmos. Am I missing something. I can also get dts x by changing my firestick audio to output in stereo, but that's the only way, if it's in any form of dolby it comes out my receiver as dolby digital or dolby digital plus. I think as far as for watching tv or shows I like the sound of dts x better, it seems more surround sound come out the back speakers and my rear height speakers play on dts x.

I have a NORMAL 7.2 setup with middle surrounds speakers mounted high. There are two in ceiling speakers, one in front of me and one behind (makes a diamond pattern). If I hook them up to an ATMOS receiver, DTS-X will use them where as ATMOS may not because of adherence to speaker patterns. (?) Also decided on the Onkyo TX-NR787, less power than I have now with my Elite series.

The power should really only be important for size of room and how much space you have, but both Dolby and DTS at least adhere to four height channels placed in opposite positions above the front left and right speakers and above the back surround channels usually or in corners.

my receiver has both on it. some films r atmos some DTS X some u have a choice of either. mine came with atmos built into it but a firmware update after i bought the unit added DTS X. I find films sound better using atmos. But for atmos to work properly u cant use 7.1 u have to change the settings to 5.1.2. on 7.1 it uses back speakers. 5.1.2 uses height speakers. The AV units usualy have 1 set of connections which will be back/height speakers height only works if u can change the setting to 5.1.2 on a 7.1 unit. U also have to put the height speakers at a 45degree angle as close to the ceiling as u can so the sound bounces of the ceiling. U dont need atmos speakers to use atmos u can use any speakers u want. they dont even have to be dolby certified to work either. all u need is the av unit to be able to decode atmos. So any cheap speakers will work with atmos. But the dolby atmos speakers will give slightly better sound but not much better. My setup uses 2'000 watt front speakers from my old hifi unit. centre speaker is from my old logitech Z506 PC 5.1. surround speakers and sub woofer r acustic solutions. did have the back speakers from that but changed them for eltax monitor ATM dolby atmos speakers but didnt notice much in the way of improvement in sound. only bought the armos speakers cause i wasnt getting atmos thinking thats why i wasnt getting it. turns out i had it set for 7.1 so atmos didnt work. it wasnt till a bit of fiddling around that i figured out i had to set it to 5.1.2 to get atmos to work.

Hey. I just wanted to know, if 4 atmos channels gets the same signal as 2 atmos channels? Since when bying 4k movie, with dolby atmos. Don`t say what kind of atmos it is. Is it 5.2.2 or even more?

Your receiver directs sound to the Atmos speakers depending upon how many speakers you have and setup in the speaker section of the receivers menu. From that it decides how to process Atmos. You will get a better experience having 4 Atmos speakers rather than 2.

I think read somewhere it's up to 32 atmos channels. If the movie has atmos or dts-x the receiver will use as many channels as you have connected

Dolby Atmos for the home was originally based on 16 channels (for decoding). My understanding though from the same convo with a Dolby rep, was that the Atmos sound mix was complete when copied to Blu-Ray, etc. So, the limitations were only ever within the decoding equipment. However, I’ve recently started seeing Blu-Ray/UHD discs advertising Atmos as 7.1.4. I’m not sure whether this is strictly the case or whether manufacturers/distributors have now started reducing the amount of data from the sound mix by down-mixing to 16 channels (or less). I’ve been out of this area of knowledge for a few years now, so I may not be as uptodate as I used to be.

Comparing Atmos to DTS-X can't really be done...fairly...as no one title has both formats available. Nor would any studio (I'd assume) release a 4k movie using Atmos intended for one market (e.g. N. America) and DTS-X in the UK for example. Also...different studios or different titles will have different mastering quality. Some better, some great, some piss poor.

I honestly agree, I sometimes notice a loudness difference in titles... some dts soundtracks being louder at same volume level than Dolby counter part. Not sure if u notice this ever but it's especially clear with the old school dvds

It is not true. Dolby rolled back their limitation upmixer. In the next firmware on denon amplifier it will be available again ( due to lawsuit)

ive got several TV shows on bluray that were made by netflix and they r all in DTS true HD or DTS master audio. Just about everything i watched on netflix was in DTS. 1 film i have on 4k bluray has a choice of atmos or DTS X and i tried both versions and found DTS X far suppior. Then again i find all DTS films suppior to any dolby film no matter what type of dolby or DTS is used. Even basic DTS sounds better than atmos. Think that might be cause my AVR upscales DTS but not dolby.

Who cares, upmixers suck anyway. Having said that, if your receiver has Auro3D, you should use it, the upmixer is better that Dolby and Dts X upmixers. Also, the biggest difference between Atmos and DTS X is that Atmos is restrictive on speaker placement and DTS X, at least according to them is not. So with Atmos, if you don't have a place for ceiling speakers, as Dolby recommends height channels to go directly above you, so you can't really run an Atmos system the way it was meant to be heard.

Please, the so-called Dolby Enabled Speakers are universally rejected by most who ever thought about surround sound. Dolby only came up with that half baked concept because they knew full well that most people would not want to cut holes in their ceiling or mount speakers directly above them in their rooms. Another thing, if you have a 9 ft ceiling, (which most houses since 2005 are built with), reflective speakers won't work. Also, I find enabled speakers to be really problematic if you have to place them on the top of the rear surrounds. Placing enabled speakers on rear sounds mean you must lower the rear surrounds to ear level, which isn't good. Let's not forget that 5.1/7.1 is still the bed in an Atmos 5.1.2, 7.1.2, 5.1.4, or 7.1.4 system, so rear surrounds at ear level will eliminate line of sight which rear surround speakers should always have. No one should be able to sit on the sides of you and block your line of sight in a 5.1 system.
