Thank you for this most informative video. Love your style; so natural and uncomplicated. The stone doll you showed is the famous "Venus of Willendorf" in Austria. I have seen it. It was found in a small village in the province of Lower Austria by the name of Willendorf, hence its name. The doll is 4.5 in tall and said to be 25,000 to 30,000 years old.

I just love all your dolls , I was at a flee market and I bought a rubber doll like the one my mom had that I use to play with , it brought me such joy to find her , I didn't think that I would ever find one just like her.

thank-you for this great info. I mostly have collected playline, plastic dolls, from the 1970s on, so i have very limited knowledge on the older antique dolls. I have only started to get into them in the past few years. I love that you make these type of doll more accessible to everyone by taking the mystery and confusion surrounding this older stuff away. i was always scared to get into the older dolls, because it seemed so overwhelming, i didn't even know where to start. Your videos have helped me understand antique dolls, and the differences between them. This video is a great compilation of so many things that you have touched on before, but all in one place! You are such a blessing to the doll collecting community, and i enjoy everything you create, but most of all the love, and joy that You, Christopher, Paul, Stanley, Linda and everyone in your circle, have shared with all of us! You're just an amazing, positive light to everyone, and i am a HUGE fan of yours.

Hi Rachel, I loved this fun day at the doll shop. Even though I've been doing dolls since I was given my first antique doll at the age of eleven, I learned something today from your wealth of information! I have a really great old peddlar doll with a huge huge basket of wares. Actually, she is wearing her wares in pockets all over the front and back of her generous skirt. You said " the bigger the basket of wares, the more expensive the doll," which I learned today from you. It makes sense too, because she has everything from dollies to needles! Much love and thanks, Linda M. xoxo

This video was so great! I loved seeing your examples. I'd sort of absorbed some knowledge about antique dolls over time, but it was really nice to see things laid out the way you did. I love them all but I think my favorite are the cloth dolls, but I loved seeing your favorites in every style! I especially loved the one whose eyes open and close, how cool! The gorgeous glossy China doll @ 27:00 minutes in. Wow! She was amazing. She instantly reminded me of how I imagined the China doll in one of my favorite books growing up - The Doll People by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin. If you're making this a series, I would love to learn more about cloth dolls and "soft sculpture" dolls, like the early Cabbage Patch dolls. I inherited some beautiful cloth dolls, some made by modern native american artisans.

Oh, I'm thrilled to hear you enjoyed the video and found it informative! Cloth dolls have a certain warmth to them, don't they? 🤗 And yes, dolls with opening and closing eyes have that extra bit of magic! That China doll does have a captivating allure! I'm so glad she reminded you of a cherished childhood book. 📚 I love your suggestion about diving deeper into cloth dolls and "soft sculpture" dolls. Your inherited pieces sound absolutely fascinating and rich in story. Consider it added to the video queue! Stay tuned for more doll fun, Rachel 🎀💫

Rachel, I learned so much from this video🤗🤗 and I really ENJOYED THIS VIDEO SO MUCH💖💖💖💖💖!!! With my modest Doll collection, I never thought about what they were made of, but they are all vintage Dolls, except my Mom's Bridal Doll from the 1950s😢😢😢 which with profound sadness😪😢😢, got lost in my recent moving process on Aug. 7th😢😢😢. I have never really thought of what my Dolls were made of, except for my Cloth Dolls which are my Raggedy Andy❤❤ and my Holly Hobbie Doll💙💙!! I would say that my favorite Doll materials from your videos and from your and your Mom's Collection as much as from Johnathan Green's collection are: Cloth Dolls like Raggedy Ann❤❤ and Raggedy Andy Dolls❤❤ from all time periods, ❤💚Diana Vining's modern cloth Christmas Doll❤💚, Bisque, like the French Jumeau Dolls❤❤❤, hard plastic like all of your Mom's stunningly gorgeous hard plastic Madame Alexander Dolls❤❤❤❤, Vinyl Dolls like Ruby Red's Doll Minnie which has a very soft pretty face look with her cute Bantu curls❤❤, and also a mixture of hard plastic with vinyl like Robert Tonner's Ellowyne Wilde Dolls💖💖💖😼😼!! And I so LOVE Barbie Dolls💖💖💖💖💖 and I was wondering, if some of the Barbie Dolls from the 70s and 80s were made of a combo of hard plastic as well as vinyl🤔🤔? And Although I am not into Wax Dolls, @ 9:55 I so LOVED that Baby Wax Doll with her beautiful glowing skin, eyes, and dress with bonnet 💙💙💙💙💙!!! Rachel, I have learned so much and I really am looking forward to seeing your next video, which I am slowly catching up!!! Thank you so much for this material and history of materials lessons on the Dolls😃😃💖💖💖💖💖!!!

Oh wow, your enthusiasm is just so contagious! 🌟 I'm thrilled to hear you're diving deep into the fascinating world of doll materials. So sorry to hear about your mom's bridal doll; that's a tough loss. 😢 But it sounds like you have a wonderful variety in your collection that you cherish. Yes, Barbies from the 70s and 80s are generally made of vinyl, but it can feel like a mix due to various production methods. Isn't that wax baby just a charmer? So glad you loved her! Thank you for keeping up with the videos and for being such a fabulous part of our doll-loving community. Can't wait to share more with you! 💖🎉🤗

Aw, thank you for the kind words! To spot an antique china head doll from a modern one, look for signs of age like crazing, wear, and sometimes even a softer painting style. I loved this. Thankyou so much Rachel. I've always adored dolls but was really discouraged after a certain age by people because they said dolls are for children. I was lucky enough to have 4 beautiful children and decided then that I wasn't going to stop them from enjoying whatever they wanted. My son still has all of his dolls, and then my daughters went through their stages but my youngest, who is 20, is as passionate about dolls as i am. I can't afford much so i find damaged dolls that people want to just about give away and i fix/restore them. I've learnt so much from Linda. Now i have 2 K✡️R dolls that need a lot of work. The large doll has a broken head so I'm going to attempt to sculpt the missing parts with fine milliput, but the medium girl just needs a new wig and clothes. I have the original outfit but the silk material is falling apart, so I'll make a copy. Hugs from Australia 😊 xx

Hello Rachel, will you be getting another Doll restoration expert to assist with your new arrivals? The video was interesting. You & your brother did a fine job. I must admit I’m very jealous of the dolls in your emporium. Thank you for the tour!

This is a GREAT video! Enjoyed it so much! I have a question - maybe a little bit off of the subject, but I don't know where to ask this. Do the shoes that fit the Tonner Grace doll also fit the 16" Tonner Tyler Wentworth doll? Are any of the clothes/shoes interchangeable between the dolls? Thank you! :)
@RachelHoffmanDolls

Thanks for the awesome comment! Great question about the Tonner dolls. The shoes for Grace are actually a bit larger, as Grace has a bigger foot compared to the 16" Tyler Wentworth doll. Some clothes might be interchangeable, but the fit could be different. Hope this helps!

Rachel, I also like to see Antique Dolls in original condition but, when should a collector consider restoration? Thank you so much!😊

Great question! 🌟 When it comes to restoring antique dolls, it's often a personal choice. Some collectors like to keep things as-is to preserve the doll's "life story." However, restoration might be a good idea if there's damage that could worsen over time. Just make sure to consult with a trusted expert so the doll retains as much of its original charm as possible. Happy collecting! 🎀💕

I did like it when you said, if it’s Dolls it’s not hoarding. This was really informative. I was surprised in many ways. I had a question when you showed the Tonner doll. I got an older Grace doll brand new in the box with the plastic still on her face/hair and arms. She was the one in the aqua gown and black hair. I think she is Grace Deluxe. I looked her up on your website and their is a slight difference, not really too noticeable, in the skin tone of her vinyl face verses her hard body. Is that a normal thing. I think she was an early one.

Hi there, I'm glad you found the video informative and love that my "Dolls = Not Hoarding" motto resonated with you! 😄 Great question about the Grace Deluxe doll! It's not uncommon for there to be slight variations in skin tone between the vinyl face and hard body, especially in older models. Factors like manufacturing and age can play into that. So, yes, it's generally considered normal. Hope that clears things up! Can't wait to chat dolls with you again soon! Dolly Cheers, Rachel 🎀🌟

It isn't easy having family and people opposite who have a minimalism feng shui belief of less is more. I prefer more is more people and love watching shows where people have collections or even the pawn shop show just to see what interesting things people bring in. I think maximalism style needs more exposure. Not all people want to live in a throw away society.

I've recently bought two dolls at an estate sale. I don't buy dolls nor do I collect them. However these two got my attention. One is the size of a small child it's heavy and made of porcelain l was told that it was made by a famous doll maker. But the other one is really old it's smaller in size I think it's made of wood inside. And the exterior reminds me of celluloid. I've only seen this type of doll in museums and antique shops. Have no idea what the value is. I'm going to sell them. But I'd like a fair price.

I get such a kick out of the hairdos on some of the paper mache dolls. They put beehives to shame! I don’t think the wax over paper mache is scary…just well loved and possibly carried around by her hair, which children do to this day. I’m amazed they survived in such good shape. I also love cloth dolls…I used to make them for various children. I made my first one, a Raggedy Anne, at 16 for my baby sister…she’s quite large. I had never put yarn through heavy cotton canvas and hate wearing a thimble, so there are a few drops of blood under her hair, lol. She’s almost 60 years old. I collect adult and little girl composition dolls and hard plastic; their faces are so beautiful. Madame A and Effanbee are my favorites.

I have a Rollison doll, made by Utley Doll Company. I would like to know what is inside this doll , there must be one left falling apart to autopsy . She is so heavy, I think more than a new born. I feels like her middle is hard plaster. I think I have a picture in this computer.

Wow, a Rollison doll from Utley Doll Company-that's quite a unique find! I get why you're curious about what's inside. Sometimes these older dolls are filled with all sorts of materials. If we come across one that's falling apart, we'll definitely consider doing a 'doll autopsy' to see what's inside. Thanks for sharing, and I'd love to see that picture if you find it! Best, Rachel
