From my experience as a Dollar General Employee, the people in the area who come into the store simply don't have another choice based on how far away our store is from a major retail store as well as price manipulation. The customer doesn't always know (in my area) that if they were to go outside town a little bit they can get a better product at a better price, so convenience at a cost basically. In short, Dollar General is making quite a profit out of this method.

Part of the reason DG has so much success in small towns is due to them being the only "grocery" store available in the area. Ok so... I was a Dollar General store manager for ten years. Yes we had two or three stores that were disorganized, "worn out", and had bad customer service but they were labeled inside the company as problem stores. All the managers of my district including myself would go to these stores with the district manager constantly to clean things up. Stores appearing like that is not part of the companies business model it is because of bad management. My first store was located in an empty shopping center where the anchor and everything else left but the DG. The inside had flood damage and was pretty worn down. It was constantly coming in with lower sales each year. After a little time spent it was pristine. I had it cleaned, we had new fixtures brought in, i organized and took note of the old inventory bleeding out of the tiny stock room, and we had the floors professionally cleaned. Customers kept complimenting the sudden change and word of mouth brought in more business. Sales during my time there kept going up and the store started making a profit. In 2007 Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (the same company that ran Toys R Us into the ground) purchased Dollar General. I'm shocked I never heard you bring this up. In 2007 - 2009 they began mass closing of low profit stores which is why your graph had that sudden drop in total stores. My store was one of them sadly. I was then moved to another store that was labeled a problem store but still very profitable. I turned that store around too. The damage wasn't as severe as the first, the problem this store had was just poor management. In my time at this location we had two remodels. The company cares very much about the appearance of their stores. They have mock stores to test new ideas. They had an extensive creative and marketing team who work hard on the companies image. They have a merchandising team that decides how every item will go on the shelves perfectly and ship out plannograms to the stores that are easy to follow. The reason the company is successful is because of cheap imports and cheap labor. This allows low prices. The cheap labor also ends up creating this image of badly kept unorganized stores. This is the managers fault of each store and theirs alone. I loved my time with Dollar General and would still be with the company today if my mother hadn't fallen into Dementia in 2014. Another good sign for the company is that KKR sold their options and left DG to run themselves.
@Jemuzu804 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to add that our answer for why isn't everything a dollar was, Everything is "generally a dollar". All the stores price points are by dollars. You won't find anything for 4.99 for example. That is the gimmick.

well if its bad management you need to remove the non producing managers right pay your help and get rid of junk simple business model huh???
@Jemuzu803 жыл бұрын
@@lindabingham394 The managers are well compensated but their entire team is not. This keeps their labor costs low. The assistant managers barely make more than the cashiers who are making bare minimum wage. Hard to find motivated employees at that price. This leaves it up to the managers to step up and put in a lot of the work load when needed to earn their salary and bonuses. The second I walk into a disorganized dollar general I immediately know the store manager is lazy and just there to pick up a pay check. Delegaters will never succeed or thrive in this stores environment only people who excel at team work. Why is some one making $7 an hour going to do all the work when some one making 40k a year is sitting in an office all day?

Funny you should say they really care about the look of the store . Here in NW Pennsylvania they closed the stores that were very clean and presentable because corporate didn't feel these stores weren't pulling their weight. They left the dirty , disorganized stores open however because corporate felt that these stores were definitely busier. The ones that were clean were thought to be less busier .
@Jemuzu803 жыл бұрын
@@gerardkowalski7683 Umm... corporate has each stores sales and expense numbers. Every store has a goal to meet in regards to these figures. The idea of them shutting down a profitable store is kind of silly to be honest with you. The manager gets a report on these numbers weekly and the information (atleast back when I worked there) is posted on a graph for all employees to see in either the break area or stock room. Corporate is judging these locations by sales not cleanliness. The clean stores prob had more time on their hands because they weren't busy and the dirty busy stores well just bad management.

Me too (Milwaukee WI) - literally just around the corner from my apartment. They put it in an area where I thought wouldn’t support a DG (it’s an expensive neighborhood), but then again, the nearest major supermarket besides the one sitting eight blocks east of it is three miles west. It just opened a few days ago and I took a look. It DID have lots of odds and ends that Pick ‘n Save either wouldn’t have or charge three times for, and I was able to grab a bucket, a decent pizza and some chips a mere 500 feet away (shrugs). DG is not a place I would habitually visit, but it has it’s use. Also, I would say that the new DG may be considered one of the 75%, but then again, not. Again, it just opened in a medium-high rent area to the east, west and north of it, but just south of my neighborhood is an area starting to see decline. Plus, there’s lots of senior living in the area, which is another of DG’s demographic.

I remember watching a news feature about Dollar General moving into these small towns, outcompeting the local grocers and forcing them to close down. Normally I'd just call it healthy competition, but the end result is often that the only food store in the local area is the Dollar General - greatly worsening the already terrible diet found in many poor areas. If you only care about money, I guess this is great news. If you care about wellbeing it's pretty disastrous!
@seththomas91053 жыл бұрын
Exactly! This happened in my hometown. The town population shrank from 2,300 in 1980 to 1,600 today. We had two full line grocery stores until one got bought in 2000 and torn down to put up a Casy's (Go figure) and then Dollar General moved in two years ago to finish off the other one on main street. The last grocery store closed this spring. :(
@gregbell98392 жыл бұрын
Don't buy your food there. I was a warehouse worker for DG. The food storage conditions are horrible. Working the loading dock, we'd regularly get food come down the line smelling of rot, covered in maggots, or find all sorts of rodents and rodent nests among the pallets of food on the ground. And that's not including the fact that they don't keep track of expiration dates. A lot of the food DG sells, that they CAN put on shelves, is already expired before they get to the stores. Stay as far away from the food as possible when you go to a DG.

China was the main reason, but mainly they sell items that are specifically manufactured for their stores. They buy them at a lower rate because they contract to buy so many at a price below a dollar. Like they sell a plastic pizza cutter that probably costs them no more than 50 cents to buy and ship to them. They mark it up 50% and make a profit. Dollar Tree likes to buy the previous run of certain products that didn't completely sell through, which is how they get certain name brand products. If I'm selling Betty Crocker Pizza cutters, and I have 20,000 of them that I cannot get rid of, I'd rather sell them for $0.20 a piece as opposed to throwing them away. Dollar Tree also buys slightly defective products, such as dog toys that failed quality testing, etc., and they mark up prices items that would cost less than a dollar anywhere else

It's simple: Most items are overpriced. Three examples: Baking soda is 48 cent at Walmart. A dollar at Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree often has name brand items in smaller sizes, yet same physical size packages, than other stores. Dollar Tree often has inferior products. I bought some after shave there. Had I mixed my normal brand half and half with water, I'd have their brand.

To the commenters saying "low quality": there are loads of durable items at Dollar Store. In fact I can't remember a SINGLE item from them that broke. Right now I see a metal pizza cutter, "Betty Crocker" giant plastic spatula, and can opener that look and work like the day I bought them. I've had an electronic charcoal lighter for years and it's worked on try #1 100%. Actually the only thing I can ever think of that didn't last until today is food - mainly $1 8-packs of Reeses :) They sell for closer to $4 at the grocery store. :)

The DG I currently work at had to have a maintenance person come in a year ago during the winter to pull the heat detector down to a reasonable level because all the hot air was going to the top and not allowing the heat to run so down at ground level no one wanted to take their coats off and it was cold enough to make people's toes start freezing. It took more than one complaint and at least a month for them to actually do something because the "heaters were running fine".

You got paid what you and/or your job was worth. If you don’t like it, do something different or be better. Dollar General pays excellent wages. I’m an uneducated blue collar worker and I have a standing offer from DG for over $80K per year. That’s a massive amount of money in my area. Cost of living is very low here. You can live very nicely here on less than half of that. They claim it’s $90K, and maybe it is with fringe benefits, but I can only see where it’ll add up to 80. I turned it down, though. I don’t want to be a part of that.

Dollar Tree in my town does thriving business even though they have a lot of junk in the store. Expired food items on shelves is common. The bus stop at the mall is in front of this store. So waiting for the bus I see many people coming from the parking lot going into the store. They are looking for cheap prices and not quality.

I live in a rural area in the southeast and he's absolutely right. Dollar Generals are almost always on the outskirts of towns, especially in poorer areas. Having worked at Dollar General there are a few things I could tell you. First, the very first store was in Scottsville, KY not Springfield. Second, it isn't just that they make 30% on what they sell, they also use antiquated equipment. Go into just about any other retailer and you'll see a "Point of Sale" system that looks modern and doesn't need to be restarted a couple times a day. We had registers that would crash on us in the middle of a transaction. We had conveyor belts that worked maybe half the time (I worked in a larger "Dollar General Market" that had an actual grocery section). There is very little that goes into the infrastructure. We even had our electricity knocked out when a tiny rainstorm came through, and it was off for almost three hours. Profits are up at DG because they invest little to nothing back into their stores.
@lightfeather9953 Жыл бұрын
Does it not reduce profit to have non functioning equipment? I don't agree with your point. It's always a question of marginal return on investment.

@@christophercole8114there are two Dollar Generals in my town of 5,000 half-alive people and I think the point of Dollar General investing very little into their locations is partially true. The whole layout scheme of a Dollar General never makes sense, and I think they don't put much thought into where shit goes in a store. I do believe they use primarily outdated transactional technology whenever it comes to the manned registers also. But I don't think they're as incompetent as to keep many stores loaded up with shitty equipment - I feel you worked at a particularly trash Dollar General.

Hi, 2020 quarantine binge commenter here. My hometown has a population of 7,000 people, and my graduating class was 74. There is 1 dollar general market and 2 dollar general stores within 10 minutes of the center of my hometown and a few more scattered on the interstate. Though there is one Walmart, Dollar General and Save-a-Lot were where my family most often shopped, we rarely went to a locally owned store with higher margins when we could afford to support local businesses, and we to Walmart for things the dollar stores didn't carry, like laptops, school supplies, Christmas gifts, and clothing. In my hometown, Walmart was kind of seen as the grocery store more affluent people could afford.
