Growing up, Dollar Tree use to be that "fun dollar store" especially back when they were in malls during the 90s and early 2000s. It seems since about 2010 or so, the stores all have this somewhat dirty, monolithic look. I don't know why Dollar Tree lost their fun vibe. Five Below is now that on steroids.

I'm 61 and visited the one just opened near me today. I found that while there were many things that appeal to me and I bought about $20 in merchandise, most of what they have would appeal to the younger crowd. I think that perhaps two thirds of their target demographic is 12-25 based on product mix. They have a ton of candy, low price jewelry and accessories, toys, art supplies and electronics. I was by far the oldest person in the store. there were about 25 customers there and two thirds were too young to buy alcohol. In fact most of the adults who were there had their kids with them. if you have not been and you are in the above demographic I'd say you will find it a fun store to visit. I did not see anything priced over $10. So this place appeals to kids and grandparents. If you like Dollar Tree and Walmart you probably will like this place as it fills the gap in between with tons of youth oriented items.

When I told my mom about this, she made a good point: I get the feeling that a lot of the older generation like it for themselves, too, as it’s very similar to something like an old “five-and-dime” store, just dressed up in a very trendy new-wave outfit.

I think it’s a brilliant concept. There’s not many places anymore where a kid can blow their weeks allowance. I know it’s tough learning how to save, especially an entire month for some cheap toy that’s just going to break the next day. With traditional toy stores gone, and a desire not to shop an entire Target store, including groceries with their mom, it’s good for them to have a store of their own.

I'm 61 and I gave up art school because I could not afford the ludicrously expensive art supplies and that was 40 years ago. Today I walked into the Five Below store that opened near me last week and I walked out with an arm full of art supplies for $20 that would have cost me over $100 at the art supply store (major chain) in the same shopping center. The best deal were the 16" x 20" cotton stretched canvases for $5 for a pair. But they also had drawing sets, acrylic paints and drawing pads also for that same price range. I wish this place existed when I was trying to go to art school 40 years ago. I found tons of school supplies some at better prices than dollar tree. An example was dollar tree had a package of pencils for $1 for five pencils but Five Below had a package of fifty pencils for $5. So that is half what Dollar Tree wanted. I didn't look at every single item but there are tons of stuff there that was the cheapest price I've ever seen. In fact those same canvases I saw for $2.5 per canvas would have cost me $4 when I was in art school all those years ago.

@@tacobella99 I also have found some nifty art supplies at dollar tree. Yesterday I got some larger tubes of black and white which we all use far more than most of the other colors. They were a dollar each for larger tubes. Are they the same quality as major brands? No of course not but in the right hands any acrylic paint can look good. I also use cheap acrylic paints instead of watercolor. The biggest complaint my artist friends have about cheap acrylics is the flat or matte texture. The biggest reason for not using acrylics instead of watercolor paint is the shiny texture. So they make fairly decent watercolor paints and it wasn't half bad getting 24 different colors. Yes small tubes but I mostly use them for water color though I am going to do a couple of acrylic paintings of my deceased parents. I'm still not over the ludicrously cheap canvas prices. 2 16" x 20" for $5 and not canvas board but actual stretched canvases and I forget the size but single canvases for $5 that are nearly twice that size. I got my white plastic palettes at Dollar Tree. I use the deviled eggs trays instead of artist's palettes because they have 24 little bowls (egg size) and a middle well perfect for either water to clean the brush or for mixing larger amounts of paint. A friend of mine paints in oils and he goes to home depot and buys 4' x 8' sheets of Masonite and cuts them into various sizes and uses that instead of canvas. He is an established artist and swears that after covering it with gesso it is safe to paint on and has a very smooth texture perfect for painting in oils. I know lumber has gone up in price but even at $30 a sheet he can still get six panels at 24" x 32" and that works out to $5 each and they are more durable than canvas.

I can say I've hopped in there and gotten a shovel that I use for gardening for $1 after scoffing at seeing Target charging $17 for a gardening trowel. I can also say that $5 t-shirts that are designed so they don't *look* like they come from a dollar store is extremely convenient if I just want a basic shirt that I can throw on but also casually go out in. Overall...they're cheap, but the stuff in there looks like it could belong in a Target!

I have former co-workers who left our sinking ship of a job to work for Five Below. They were promoted quickly and treated well. Five Below isn't just clean, but they also have some decent products to keep the adults bringing their teenagers there. Can't help but really enjoy the place when I have to go there. And yeah, if you look up some of the products, alternatives online are more expensive. I bought a USB salt lamp (the pink glow is very cool) for $5 and the ones online were huge and unwieldy as well as very, very expensive and heavy. My favorite ramen is only available at Five Below and it's a dollar. When they were stocked for a short time at our other grocery stores it was $3 for a cardboard bowl and then they just faded from existence. If I order them on Amazon it's a similar mark up, maybe about $2.50. So Five Below is very interesting. The nostalgia type decorations for the holidays are also pretty great because they're cheap but they're also going to be able to be reused for a few years. It's not every day I buy a $5 box of window clings and I can use them for five years. Not every day I can get this stuff I can show to my nieces and go "hey I had this in the 90s!" and then they make fun of me for being old. But it's still a high class dollar store so you'll always find crappy items here and there. Just know what you want.

I was a long time manager for Five Below. I live near Philly and ran several of the oldest stores, including locally to the mentioned Tom Vellios and had a friendly relationship with him and his family. David Schlessinger left the company a few years ago. Five Below was a great place to work for a long time, and it was fun seeing the company grow. I will say they don’t pay well, so that was a negative. Also, of late, field leadership (regional managers and district managers) isn’t great. The VP of Stores George Hill has scared off some good people. Payroll is extremely tight, and they continually try to cut it more and more. Store management doesn’t have much of a work-life balance; salaried store managers are expected to make up the gaps in payroll by working as many hours as necessary. Joel is a great CEO, and they have a lot of intelligent and talented people at the corporate level; I know many of them, but there is a disconnect at times between stores and corporate. Overall, I enjoyed working here for the first 8-9 years of my tenure there; the last year or 2 were a struggle.

The way I GASPED when you said Zany Brainy!! I was OBSESSED with that store omg! I bought my first razor scooter from there, it had green wheels. It was the only store that continued to carry Amelia’s Notebook series after it left Barnes and Noble. The Zainy Brainy I lived by was situated in this 3-4 store strip mall that was across the parking lot from a dead mall that people used to go walk through. I specifically remember it being by a Burlington Coat Factory. Zany Brainy stayed packed at all hours! There were always kids running around screaming with excitement, moms gossiping, workers who seemed really energetic at all times, and...me who was also screaming in excitement. I was suuuuper hurt when the store just one day was gone. An Old Navy moved in and a while later it just vanished. It was abrupt! It one of the main stores I think about to this day....I’ve seen a ton of Five Belows around, they are beginning to rival Starbucks at this point. The store has never caught my interest...maybe I will visit now after seeing this video. Many blessings mate, I needed that trip down memory lane AND I now want to visit the store. One of these stores opened up last week near me here in Florida. I never heard of this place until I saw the advertisement here on KZbin last night. So I went today to check it out. I bought a bunch of very inexpensive art supplies. The stretched canvases are a particularly good deal. I paid $5 for two 16" x 20" canvases. At the art supply store (very famous chain) in the exact same shopping center, their 16" x 20" stretched canvases were being sold for $12 for one. I have not tested the quality yet though the frame is slightly thinner than usual professional quality ones but not to the point where it would matter for that size canvas. I bought some other art supplies and for the money this is a very good deal. So an observation. I have been to that location before when it was a big chain shoe store. I went there a year ago and two years ago. The first time I walked in looking for an inexpensive pair of athletic shoes. Their least expensive pair was $49. They were not a major brand of shoe. In fact I would compare them to what Walmart sells for about $25. I looked around and saw only one other customer in the place and three sales people. This was in July on a Saturday afternoon. I walked out without buying anything. During my 15 minute visit that one other customer walked in, then walked out without buying anything and there was nobody else that walked in. That was probably around 5pm. A year later, last summer, this time in June, I walked in looking for shoe laces. I needed a 60" pair to replace the shoe laces I had purchased from Walmart the year before (I decided if I was going to buy low quality Chinese made shoes I might as well buy them at Walmart for half the price this place wanted). I eventually found the well hidden shoe lace rack and searched in vain. None on my size. I asked the clerk about them and she said they don't carry shoe laces in 60." I asked if any of their shoes had that size shoe lace and she said "yes, about half of what we sell uses that size." I asked then why she would not carry laces to fit the shoes they sell and she said most shoes wear out before shoe laces do. On that visit, also a Saturday but a little later in the day, around 7pm I noted two sales people and no other customers besides me. On today's visit to the exact same location but an entirely different business, Five Below, a Saturday and about noon, there were about 25 or so customers in the building. There were three sales people there, same as the other business and in fact one of them was the former employee of the previous business located there. Glad to see she didn't stay unemployed long. Most people I saw had armfuls of stuff. When I went to check out I noted there were six other customers checking out and all had multiple items. I was in the building for about half an hour checking out all the items they had. I would say that this business model is far more successful than what was previously there. They had a wide variety of items. Nothing was more than $10. Many items were very reasonably priced and some were dirt cheap. An assortment of items were also at what I would consider normal retail prices and a handful were perhaps a little over priced. They wanted $2 for a carbonated beverage that I bought on the other side of the parking lot at Dollar Tree for $1-same size. But almost everything they had was priced at or below or significantly below normal retail. I would suggest this is a perfect compliment to Dollar tree as they had a huge array of products in the $1-$10 range which will appeal to the same customer base and in fact three people I saw at Five Below today I later saw at that Dollar Tree when I bought some things there. My only real disappointment was the lack of sugar free candy. I'm diabetic and few places have many of these. All in all I can see why this place will be very successful and continue to be so for years to come. This fills a niche that neither Dollar Tree nor Walmart fills. And while the product mix may be mostly geared towards a younger crowd, this 61 year old bargain hunter found plenty of items appealing to older people such as myself. Unlike that over priced under quality shoe store it replaced, I will be back here far more frequently than once per year and I expect I will find something to buy every visit. In fact I'm planning to come back before the end of the month to buy a couple of things that were advertised on their website but had not yet arrived due to this location just opening it's doors last week.
