Dollar General Workers EXPOSE Company's Illegal Union-Busting

Dollar General spent $13.5K a day to stop workers from forming the company’s first union - and likely broke the law doing it. UFCW says the company illegally fired a pro-union worker and threatened others. They’re currently challenging the 3-2 vote against the union.

FYI, this store would not have been the first dollar general to unionize. That title goes to Auxvasse, Missouri. They won the right to organize by 4 to 2. DG fought and appealed the vote for two years before the Court ordered them to bargain: DG then abruptly closed the store.

I've worked for DG for ten years. As manager for five. I like my job but I hate the way dh treats it's employees. The payroll hours are ridiculous. I have to short staff my store just to get my key holders 30 hours a week where as I'm expected to be in the store 45 to 55 hours a week. Our store has been in the top five percent for years because I've maintained a core staff who work their asses off with no real supposed from corporate. We took the DG voice survey today which basically boils down multiple choice answers. There is no real voice in the survey. It's just a facade that our opinions or concerns matter.

It's time corporations realize we can run businesses without them, but without us they would have no one to leech from... They wouldn't even have a business. It's also time the Proletarian realize that as well... Class consciousness is forming. Co-ops now!

@Kylie Rittenhouse Sure, no need to address the point. Vomitting out bootlicking memes is much better. Also you better realize very quickly that you are expendable as well and it has nothing to with "illegals". They'll use you up and discard you like you're nothing. This is capitalism, the system you protect. If you think otherwise you're an even less lucid than you appear.
@beeinthehive

@David Seven I don't have it wrong at all. While I agree we are being used, abused and exploited, having "bosses" rather than leaders is part of the problem, and it is not symbiotic in the slightest... Not unless you consider a leech draining a host to be symbiotic relationship. There's not one thing they can offer workers we can't do for ourselves through Anarcho-syndicalism (democratically run, and leaders are voted in or out when need be) is the key. It's done successfully all over the world, no bosses taking 98% or the surplus value and forcing those who do the actual work to divide the remainder among the rest. Bosses need workers so they can absorb the productive value we create. Workers don't need bosses, who often have never even done the jobs over which they rule let alone are experts, to tell us what to do or take our surplus labor.
@beeinthehive
@beeinthehive 2 жыл бұрын
@David Seven They get those things from other co-ops, eventually. As it stands, they can get those things the same way corporations do. Co-ops being decentralized and integrative isn't a weakness, it's a strength and a supplement system which uses cooperation instead of compensation and sabotage. It also allows each place of business to operate by those who know and understand their business and procedures like no CEO possibly could know. Having a CEO or boss in command who has never done any of the jobs makes no more sense than having a general who has never been in the military. By electing our individual leaders and jointly choosing the direction of the business, especially through consensus democracy, ensures that those who know that business best at both the ground level and logistical level, are also the operators and directors. It also works as a meritocracy, which is fair. They are leeches because they drain the blood of the workforce in vast amounts. Our labor belongs to us. They are not needed. The primary reason we cannot collectively open our own co-op businesses is because they pay such low wages in the first place. No one can afford it. So capitalism has created a problem, then claims we need them because they have forced the situation. It is a circular argument and shows it's not a fault of co-ops, but it is in the privatization of the means of production. We don't need a capitalist solution for a problem created and maintained by capitalism. We need to change the system. Surely you aren't suggesting that bosses are somehow genetically able to do something that others cannot. Do you think no one who works in the business can work out supply chains or bring onboard others who can...? If so, please elaborate on how and why. Also, it's not about improving pay and hours, it's about splitting the labor surplus among those who actually do the labor instead of one person who doesn't necessarily do anything but take nearly all of it for themselves. Salaries fluctuations occur in accordance to how well the business does. Talk about motivation. Corporations will never "step up" because they don't have to step up. Their hearts will never suddenly grow. Capitalism is an amoral system (which makes it an immoral system) and they will do whatever it takes to increase their profits. This is not "the way it is" as some think... It is something being done to us.

@beeinthehive
@beeinthehive 2 жыл бұрын
@David Seven It *is* very wrong. Minimum wage is a bosses way of saying "I would pay you less, but the law won't let me". We do the work, they keep the fruits of our individual and collective labor, and steal all the credit. The owner of where I sell my labor does nothing but collect the five million a year we bring him (he told us that's what he gets per year after overhead) and he even got an award from the city for the best local restaurant. All he did was buy it. It isn't like he was in on ground level or does *any* of the actually work. He even has managers and accountants, so he doesn't do anything. I don't see how any reasonable person can call that a meritocracy... Unless they consider being able to exploit workers to be a job.

Interviewed with them a few years ago. The business style seemed to be a merging of ShopRite (food stamps) and Target (speed focused). The harder part was the store aisles were narrower, lighting not as good as a Target so high speeds seemed unsafe. With reduced manpower and registers close to the door this raised red flags that theft might be too easy (stocking, ringing, limited ability to monitor customers like a security guard). Based on experience with both, unionization seems very important. The conflict with unionization may be with the path to becoming a store manager that they promised.
@Oldsmokey1

Think about this. My wife runs a DG and sometimes they only allow her like 70hrs or less to staff the store for 7 days. Which means she works the store by herself a lot. She was in tears the other day because a truck showed up to unload, she was by herself and want sure what to do. She called the regional manager got hung up on and cussed out by his underling. So she literally had to close the store while she unloaded and stocked the frozen food because it can't just set in the back room after unloaded. She's also not allowed to refuse a truck. But then got chewed out for doing what she had to do. She's had employees she could only give 8hrs for the whole week. Who'd stay at a job like that?.... Nobody would or should. DGs employee policies need to be redone. Also another big gripe i have is the fake surveys that are counted on like it's life or death. Workers deal with so so so much b.s. over these things. Her district is #1 in the country but it's all fake and get bonus count on this fake system also.

Dollar tree / Family Dollar is the same way, As far as being open holidays, double standards, holiday pay was nonexistent, during covid quarantine they did like 2 extra dollars an hour. They're understaffed, and rude to customers, discipline lacking where needed and enforced where it shouldn't be. Like 2 employees having a fall out of being best friends coz one girl slept with the others boyfriend and screaming and cussing at each other on the sales floor. Making customers wait in insanely long lines when there's 4-5 registers but only 1 open. U got told by the store manager my customer service was "too good"... whatever that means..needless to say I quit working there.

@@senorverde09 that doesnt seem legal. Did you go to NLRB? Can you say what local you were with? Start at the President of your local union. I came from a huge union . Their main international office is in DC. How did you organize? There are many Dollar Generals. Start at the top by going national . Have you talked to NLRB? Do you have an organizer to help get things started? Did Dollar General change its name when it moved? Something was probably illegally done. Did you picket them when they moved down the street? There is safety in numbers of stores who will have people to walk pickets and not give up. I have never crossed a picket line from Any Company in my life! Do some research in HOW TO ORGANIZE A UNION. Probably can Google some of it. Get familiar with NLRB law. From Teamsters United Auto Workers, Communication Workers Electrical Workers judtvto name a few all started from ground up. It can work .

*and Now for Something Completely Different!* _The Average American today lives at the same address for about 5 years and then moves._ The reason is that LOCAL Business no longer exist as they did before 1980 and most jobs create a 'nomadic corp tribe' where Corporations become the Longest Relationship between people and their lives. This makes COMMUNITIES and LONG TERM Housing nearly impossible. PASS LAWS in Your Cities to Forbid Corporations 'City Business Lic.' and issue 'City Business Lic.' only to people who actually live in the Communities. THIS INCLUDES BANKS even if that means CITY SUPPORTED 'Savings and Loans' for the community. .... there are several reasons for doing this, but 1st is to keep the MONEY that comes into the city kept in the city as much as possible. 2nd is increasing 'competition' with many smaller businesses all competing for Workers of all kinds and as such Raising the Wages within the Community. ...... What do International Corporations do? --- sell cheap products that brake and suppress wages and steal Tax Revenue from the Cities and Towns in their area.

When I used to work at Dollar General where I used to live if you even *spoke* about unionizing you were reported to the District Manager and *fired* the next day. I quit after the manager scheduled herself off for Thanksgiving and everyone else had to work, shitty scheduling. Had little to no time off, days off were scheduled for work. I worked a nightshift and then a morning shift ontop of that. And they only do minimum wage for part time and full time people. Managers get around $13.50 an hour (I think, as far as I remember) We were really limited on our breaks too, I had none (and I worked 6-8 (and sometimes 10) hours). My co-workers smoked so they got a longer 30 min break (usually needs to be 15 mins). I had like 40-50 hours per week under my belt while my co-workers sometimes had 10-12 a week. It was incredible to meet new people and I loved my co-workers but I hated the company to all hell.

A suggestion. If you want a company to be able to pay more you should support trump. My material cost is up 40%. Fuel cost to 75%. As a business owner my leftover pay is cut and I lost money for a month or two while I had to raise prices to my customers.

@Sean Tyler Brenner it is not from covid. It is the politicians using covid as an excuse to try socialism. Even now the free money and benefits have made it so a lot of people decided to not work and go on the system. Go talk to any business around you I guarantee they can't get employees. Even in AZ where I am it is the case. In FL the docks are not backed up but In CA they are? FL and CA have the same amount of cases as a percentage of population. The same amount of deaths per population. Government can't stop a virus ... I think they are finally starting to realize it.

The stores are not open on Christmas day. That's a lie! You work in retail. Nights and weekends are a given. If you worked in my store you wouldn't have to worry about working 80 hours across 2 jobs. You'd have plenty of time to entertain the other. Which begs to question, what math are you using to calculate 80 hours? That's the equivalent of 2 full time jobs. Your other job loyalties don't matter when it comes to staffing to the needs of the store. Unions are corrupt. You'll be paying dues until the proverbial cows come home. I know from experience. Your dues pay the salaries of a shop steward, the treasurer, and any other position in the chain of command. At the end of the day, you'll give up more than you would gain.

You knew what you were getting into when you got first hired on to that place so why are you acting surprised now if you do not like the way a company stands or what they stand for or what they pay leave it why are you going to force a company's hand into the Union when they don't want to join the union you know it should be up to the company not the employees for that company to join the union
