Dollar buying less these days? In this video I will share some of the emergency kit items I buy at the dollar store. if you have several kits to keep stocked up, being a bit of a bargain hunter can help keep your supplies topped off. Saving money on certain items by shopping for deals will help put money towards key items that need to be top quality. Some of these items are pretty mundane, but buying them at the Dollar store is often a bit cheaper than other places. Loading up on non-perishable items and consumable items when good deals are found will keep your supply closet stocked. I find having replacement items on hand to re-stock my pack or truck box immediately after a trip lessens the chance of "forgetting" to replace it because I don't have time to go to the store. This keeps my kits in a ready state with little down time.
A few good tips to remember with the food items I have found:
First be honest about what you need to carry. Excess items can add weight and cost to keeping a well stocked kit. Know how, and what you need to use to prepare items. Keeping the required cooking vessels or can opener in the accompanying kit. No sense carrying a meal that needs cooking if you do not carry a pot and stove or cookfire equipment.
Second is keeping food items and other consumables rotated, pulling expired or near expired items for quick use. I like to test food items before I use them in a kit to make sure they will be good meals. Nothing worse than pulling out your meal when on a trip or in an emergency only to find it tastes like garbage can and gives you heartburn or ties your guts in knots.
