I’ve had great luck with their 4/1.00 seeds and they are heirloom ! Gardening should not be expensive, shop cheap and learn to scavenge for things. Learn to “brew” your own fertilizer, gather your own mulch …..think outside the box !!! Happy gardening ❤

Oh wow! I didn't realize that some of their 4/$1 seeds are heirloom. That's good to know because if you save the seeds from heirloom plants, the new plants will produce an identical copy as the parent plant. 😊🌸 Also, you are so right in regards to thinking outside of the box. Thanks for sharing, friend! 💓😊🌷

Oh, and you can go to the section that has metal baskets, grab one, go grab a couple metal garden double hooks, find a pot that fits in the basket, then you can hang it off the fence or railing. That's where my dianthus lived all season till I planted them in October.

Always buy the cheapest tools, especially as a beginner. Then as things break you get a better idea of what is worth investing more money in. If you can pay $1.25 and that tool lasts you a week, you might need to invest in a slightly more expensive one. But, if a $1.25 tool lasts an entire season or longer then it's paid itself back. Plus there are tons of tools people buy and never use or rarely use. The dollar store is a great place to stat

I totally agree with you - 100%. As with any new hobby, it's really silly to go "all in" and buy expensive things to support a hobby that you're not sure you're going to love. Start cheap and start slow and build your way up to more expensive things. And not all expensive things are always the best, either. But what you have stated, friend, is great advice! 😊🌷

My all time favorite find is the wire wastebaskets that come in white and black, and also in two sizes. I place these over any seedlings that I want to protect from critters, including my own chickens. These are sometimes sold online at popular gardening websites as well ”critter covers” for between $3-5 🤯
@budgetgardeningvita
@budgetgardeningvita 11 күн бұрын
I feel like the wire wastebaskets are the most popular "garden" item at DT. At least it seems that way from all the comments I'm seeing about it. I didn't include it in my video as they were not in the gardening section. But... maybe if DT moved some of those to the garden section and sold them with a sign that read "cloche" or "critter cover", they may actually sell a ton! 😅🐿️🐔

A little later in the year, Dollar Tree will have foam kickboards for children. These also work great as kneeling pads! The textured surface on the garden department kneeling pads hurts my knees, but the kickboards have a smooth surface. They're also bigger than the kneeling pads. I buy a few every year. They last forever! I'm so happy I found your channel!

wire trash cans or baskets are good for deer/rabbit protection. I secure them with sticks. Hanging baskets are good for this also but slots might be too wide for rabbits. At Easter they have cute pastic oblong containers that I use for seed starting. You have to make drainage holes in bottom - they are a good depth and length. The seeds are a good price.

I have had really good luck with the by-pass pruning shears and the needle nose trimmers from the dollar tree. After a couple of years the spring sometimes slips on the pruning shears but I just put the end that slpped back in place and back to working great. I have also used a pair of 7 inch scissors from the office suppliesfor trimming and they have worked for a long time too. I use the wire trash cans to protet plants too like another viewer said. They have been a life saver. We have squirrels that like to dig up everything. just for fun.

So true about the springs. When they start popping off it's usually because they've stretched. I take mine to our local hardware and buy a new spring for 50-75 cents and they're good to go for several years.

That's great to know about the by-pass pruners as well as the needle nose trimmers. Also, thanks for sharing your tip about the spring slipping and what you do to resolve the problem. Sounds like an easy enough fix (versus throwing them away and buying a new pair). I'm loving how many people are using the wire trash cans to protect their plants. It's pretty ingenious actually. If you look up how much wire cloches are on the internet, the prices are ridiculous! Darn squirrels! 😅🐿️

Just a suggestion. If you have pots, decor, even fairy garden items spray them with a sealant. They will last longer. I bought 3 stepping stones from dt. After two years out in the elements they crumbled into tiny pieces. So this last spring I bought more of the stepping stones and applied a sealant. They are still outside and not crumbling. This summer I plan on resealing them just in case. I love the little frogs that dt. Same thing. I sealed them and we have had alot of rain this month. They are doing great. I plan on buying those cute holders or whatever they are called and you can put them on planters. Well I am putting them on my fencing after I seal them. Even seal the planters from dt. I have had some for 5 years and they are still doing good. I love dollar trees garden tools and supplies. I even bought some seeds and my daughter said mom those won't work. Suprise! They worked. I was so happy. Planning on buying more seeds from dt. Keep gardening.

Sorry for watching late but I drove to a small feed mill in Columbia County to pickup chicken, horse and goat feed. You make me laugh I find a lot of things in Dollar Tree. I buy a ton of the four for a dollar leaf lettuce seeds and mix it with some salad mixes with different leaf lettuce in them to fill the four foot by eight foot beds. Get the pots,watering can and my favorite green house watering can came from there. It looks like an elephant sitting down with trunk pointing out and up,works great for the back flats on the shelves because water comes out without tipping to far and drowning the plants!

Hi Ingrid. Definitely keep checking your Dollar Tree. Early bird catches the worm and once they stock up, you'll have the best selection! Some watering cans I like for their slow, gently trickle (for seedlings let's say). What I like about the Dollar Tree watering can is sometimes you also want to give a plant a good, quick drink of water. I also like the size for indoors when I'm bottom watering my seedlings. 🌱😊

Another great gardening item that Dollar Tree has a little later in the spring are what I call trugs and they call buckets. They're plastic with 2 molded handles and come in many different colors. I'd estimate they hold about 2 gallons. They're usually in the spring section in the store, or can be found later in the year in the plastics section of the store. They're great for so many garden uses! I put weeds in them to carry to my compost pile or mix up potting mix in them. Last summer I punched drainage holes in them with an ice pick and put bareroot roses in them with potting soil until I could plant the roses in their permanent home. And for $1.25 each, they're wonderful items to have around when I need them!

I like buying seeds from the dollar store. They usually sell the packs 4 for a dollar. They don't have much seeds in them but that's ok you don't need 50 tomato plants 😂. I have bought the box flower blends and they're great too. They even used to sell small gladiolus bulbs too but I haven't seen those in years in my local store. The pots break easily. I threw some away last year. I did get 2-3 years out of them. I bought the long rectangular ones and I started using those for outdoor seed starting. I was even thinking of using them to plant something in this year. You can only fit one plant and nothing too big but they are still useful especially for people with little space. I would not recommend the hanging baskets they are just not great. Mine lasted one season, but if you just want to try it go ahead and get it out of your system. Thanks for this video.

Hi Julia! You definitely can't beat the seeds from the dollar store. Dollar Tree only had these seeds for right now but I'm sure they'll get more soon. I agree with you about the number of seeds in the packages. It's totally fine for most home gardeners. I've seen the flower bulbs there in the past (gladiolus and even ranunculus). I'll have to go back later to see if they come in. Good to know about the pots. Pots can be very expensive otherwise! Also good to know about the hanging baskets. I got great hanging baskets from Ocean State Job Lot but that store is really only local to New England (I believe). But I agree with you that if it's the first time trying a hanging basket why not buy it for $1.25 just to see how it works for you. Why buy a super expensive one and then find you don't even like it? Thanks for sharing, friend. 🙏🏼😊

You're very welcome. You can't go wrong with the price. I'll probably go back and get some seeds just to see how the germination rate is. 🌱 I'd also like to test out a few of those vertical garden stacking pots and put some strawberry plants in there. 😊🍓

Pfft that's where I got my wildflower seeds, gardening tools, all my pots and hooks to hang the hanging pots and baskets, lol. Because last year was my first year, now I know what I'm gonna need this coming spring. My DT in SE MI just started getting in some gardening items in and I was like, woah Nelly, I just went broke buying Christmas stuff, need to wait a little longer, lol. I will say, do not buy their dirt. It's complete junk. Looks like it comes from a dump in PA and it does not drain well at all. It's like cement. I had to mix it in with good dirt for some drainage for a couple pots that just had wildflower plants and pots had big holes for drainage. Great video Vita!

Hi Lisa. Honestly you're so smart for buying your gardening supplies from a place like the Dollar Tree seeing that it was your first year gardening. So many people jump into a hobby and go out and buy expensive things for their hobby just to find out the hobby is not for them. The hobby could really be anything, but in this case it's gardening. How you did it is very smart. And as you continue with your hobby (if you do), then it makes sense to invest in maybe nicer, more durable things. Also, thank you for sharing your experience with the Dollar Tree dirt. It's good to know that we should steer clear away from it. 😊🙏🏼

@budgetgardeningvita I am totally sticking with it. I'm going to do even more next Spring. It's like therapy for me, lol. I for sure need to invest in better pruners. The DT ones are OK for small tasks but the spring pops out and it's frustrating. 😉

Sunflowers put neitrients back into your garden soil.
@budgetgardeningvita
@budgetgardeningvita 11 күн бұрын
Hi Janet. Thank you for sharing. 😊 I tell people you are always learning when it comes to gardening - regardless of how long you've gardened. I've been gardening for 30 years and I never knew that sunflowers put nutrients back in the garden soil. So when I saw your comment, I researched it and well - you're right! For anyone else reading this comment, this is what I found. So cool by the way! 💓🌻 - Sunflowers have extensive root systems that break up compacted soil, which improves water infiltration and nutrient absorption. Their tap roots also bring nutrients, water, and microbes from deeper soil layers to the surface. - Sunflower roots secrete organic acids that help release nutrients, making them more available to other crops. - Sunflowers aerate the soil, which helps other plants grow by improving root penetration and water movement.

The one thing you want to look out for when buying pots and containers from Dollar Tree is the type of plastic. They get these pots from China. Some plastics have toxins that make them unsuitable for food growing. I purchased a few larger pots from Doller Tree a couple of years ago and they didn't have a recycle triangle anywhere on them so I had no idea what was in the plastic they used to make those containers. Just something to be aware of. I ended up using them not for food but for flowers to attract pollinators. You can Google which plastics are safe for food and can be used as grow containers.

Those green stock vertical towers are not deep enough and it makes a really hard way to plant seeds. There’s not enough room in them.

Hi Valerie. I'm going to maybe buy a few just to experiment with them. You never know until you try, right? I think I'll plant some of my strawberry plants in a few and flowers in another. For just a few dollars, it'll be a good experiment anyway. I'll try to video my process and share the results. 😊🌸

I've had luck growing shallow root, quick to bolt plants in them, such as cilantro, arugula and lettuce. I reseed mid-summer and the pots are lightweight enough to move out of the harsh sun. I've done best with two and three layers. You will be watering a lot so extra drain holes are a good idea! @@budgetgardeningvita

@budgetgardeningvita
@budgetgardeningvita 16 күн бұрын
Hi there. I've never bought their potting soil but one person in the comment section of this video did say to stay away from Dollar Tree potting soil. If I were to buy it, I'd only buy one bag, see what it looks like and sift it and/or amend it if need be with perlite (to make it have more drainage), etc. I'd also add slow release fertilizer in the planting hole. And then I'd experiment with it and see how it does for a season (maybe just in a pot). 😊🌸
@amberdavis1066
@amberdavis1066 14 күн бұрын
It's not great. You can use it for large pots to fill the bottom cheap but I'd definitely add compost or fertilizer. Not for seeds. It compacts densely.

Actually that's incorrect. I looked it up and American Seed is owned by a company called Central Garden & Pet. They also own Ferry Morse seed, the Jiffy pot brand, and Adam's Flea & Tick pet products. Apparently, they used to have some kind of distribution deal with Monsanto in the 90's that ended in the two companies suing each other and eventually settling in early 2002. Their website says: "all American Seeds are 100% Non-GMO."
