The price of the dried chives at target was so audacious for me that I went to the local farmer's market, bought a $2 bundle of fresh chives (with some flowers as well, those are delicious), cut them and dried them myself. Better than any store-bought jarred chives I've ever had. Only took a week to dry on a cookie sheet. Got most of a jar plus the flowers which are huge bombs of chive flavor AND pretty. Sometimes doing things yourself is the best.

If you want to, you can also just chuck cut chives into the freezer in a container. They lose a bit of texture after a while, but they taste exactly the same and basically defrost instantly because they’re so thin. Plus it’s less work.

I think you should add a third variant to these, with the ingredients that you think are best, or much more reasonable. Like in this dish for instance, what if you use the Target steak, but the Dollar Tree chives. Would it make a difference, either in price or taste? I was always told to buy the best quality meat I can afford, but you can cut some corners on other ingredients. What would be the ultimate dish with ingredients from both stores for the best (not necessarily the cheapest) dish for a reasonable price?
