The greatest American musical. Pure magic, but it's all about Carol. She shines bright and this is such a treat seeing her full throttle and doing HER role. There is no other Dolly

The show was written for Ethel Merman....but Carol took on the task fantastically.

@@robertarthur3889 Well...the original show Dolly! A Damned Exasperating Woman was written for Merman but by the time it reached Broadway 50% or more had been retooled and retooled around Channing.

How very exciting!!! I am in that production on stage with Carol Channing. What a great opportunity it was to find this after 34 years! Thank you!

One of the things I find most incredible is the back-phrasing she does. So many times it's almost like she's going to get off with the music but she's always right on it and never misses a beat. I just love her so much

She said in interviews that she did it to keep the audience on their toes.

I love this Dolly dress 👗 so much more than the recent revival with Bette Midler. This one is so iconic...the revival should have kept it closer to the original.

Carol was a PRO. She had it all - on stage.

"Pro" is indeed the word, and we are not likely to see many more to equal her in that department.

Shame they didn't have her recreate this performance in the movie...yes, Babs is a great singer but she really wasn't right for the role. Carol and Walter Matthau would have been a hoot!
@wengfong67422 жыл бұрын
Carol was never considered by the studio to be in the movie. After thoroughly modern Millie, even though she was Oscar nominated, she was considered not to be suitable for the movie. Other stars like Liz Taylor and Shirley MacLaine were considered. Barbra was brilliant as Dolly! She is the best Dolly in my opinion and critics much preferred her performance to the movie as a whole.

I saw this production!!! A friend from college was in the show as Barnaby..He said Carol was a huge diva, in the worst possible way...

She was like that? Surprised. Then again, people have said Merman was just the same.

Fergus Murray I remember Gary saying at the time that he and Carol were not getting along very well. I never did find out why. I thought Gary was a nice guy. We talked a few times.
