Lyrics:
Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a living
Barely gettin' by, it's all taking and no giving
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
9 to 5, for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead but the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me
Mmmmm...

As one of the very few people, let alone women, who managed to live as a free artist without some direct boss? Which she managed from her early twenties onward? She sang about something in this song she herself barely ever lived. Not saying she did not work hard, mind, but her worklife wasnt really ever "9-5". Gig musicians dont ork like that.

@Isla Robinson hmm, Let's assume what you're saying is right and Parton made this claim in a documentary. Perhaps I'm jaded but life has taught me to not always take what everyone says at face value. There is definitely a sound of a typewriter bell that you hear on carraige return that is not nails or any other body part. So they had a real bell sound of a typewriter but for the clicking sound they decided to use her fingernails? Sounds really suspect. Why not just use the real clicking sound of the typewriter? Edit, well now that I think about it more the clicking rhythm is really precise and it might be hard to get that kind of precision with typewriter keys, so ok I guess I believe it. This was before the kind of electronic soundboards they have now.

@lakebay972
@lakebay972 24 күн бұрын
No, because the work rate is 8 hours. The extra hour is added at the beginning which grants you a non-paid hour of free time (most commonly a lunch). Some States have it where if you take a break longer than 30 minutes, your employers doesn't have to pay you for that time. In Texas, if you work 8 hours of longer, you are entitled to a non-paid minimum 30-minute break. It's only 9-to-5 if you are on salary and choose not to take a lunch.

I have to say old Country has a place in my world of music. Apparently Dr. Hook was almost country but became more known in the Rock world. King Harvest was a country band but everyone knows their dance hit "Dancin' in the Moonlight." I would also argue John Denver's song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" also sort of transcends in many ways. And I love "Devil Went Down to Georgia."

I love the juxtaposition between the chipper tone of her voice & beat and the lyrics & messaging. Talking about how people working 9 to 5 don’t get recognition and are stuck in a job that brings them no satisfaction.

Shit I fucked up. When I said ‘people’ I meant people who experience misogyny/people who are perceived as women.

I have a lot of female coworkers, and they love this song. Many of them weren't even alive in the early 80s when this song was out. I was technically around for this song, barely, and I know of the song/movie, but I had no idea the visceral impact it has on women, even young women.

@@ddepfake Yes, it is. Even Jesse Jackson stated in his book that African Americans should buy stocks that pay high dividends because "dividends are color blind". I started a business and it succeeded. Every African American should try their hand at starting a business. It will solve many problems.

@@VEttariPEPC You're kind of missing the point, not everyone is in a position to start a business, and it's ignoring the problem of discrimination. Most of them wouldn't succeed if every African American or woman tried to start a business, it's not a solution to their problem.

@@ddepfake Want to hear abput discrimination??? I as a white male have been discriminated against more than you will ever be. So, don't give me any $h!t about being discriminated against. I had a 4.0 Average my first Semester of College. I continued my high Grades through the next semester. That Summer I interviewed with the NY State DEC for an Intern Engineering Position, This was in the Summer of 1978. The Interview was held at the DEC Offices in the World Trade Center. During that Interview I was told that, despite the fact that I was the most qualified Candidate, there were 30 Applicants and 3 Positions and they could not hire me (even though I was the most qualified) because I was not Black, Hispanic, or Female. So, don't give me any $h!t about discrimination. As a White Italian Male, I have been discriminated against far more than you.

I've always thought that Dolly was a lot more beautiful than most so-called movie stars. She's got more personality for a start.

This may be a little cheesy, but I can't help but love Dolly. She creates an atmosphere of good times and warmth. She has to make make eye contact with all the people around her, which adds to this clip.

Cheesy is a term used for something that is overused. She is essentially the one who started it. Therefore it can’t be cheesy.
