I don’t think it’s full of compliments. I see it as one woman recognizing that’s she’s been beat. She’s recognizing that she is the “lesser” woman (because Jolene is so beautiful and desirable) and begging her to choose someone else. It would be like Halle Berry showing my man attention. In real life, I know my man would be loyal to me. But I’d still be nervous.

"Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your skin is soft like summer rain And I can not compete with you, Jolene" You can see the values of that time, those that would change some time in the future, in which they tell how beauty isn't everything but back then it was very much so and she envied Jolene for it. Dolly herself would challenge these values; she's such a gem

Lisa Mona: I don't like modern "country" either. For you to gain context, I suggest you Google hpr.org. Select HPR1 to listen at really old country music, and then select HPR2 to listen to country music popular between the really old and sometime in the 1990s. The time periods are spelled out somewhere, but I have forgotten what they are. The artist names and song titles appear as the music plays, so you will know what you are hearing, even though there is no verbal commentary by DJs (although right now there is some appeal for operating funds, which they do only twice a year.) I am a Bluegrass fan, so I listen to HPR4. HPR3 plays Christmas music, and only during the Christmas season. I'm glad you are here instead of there. Oh, by the way, I think you should play my video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6HNZoZnep2kgNk Also, you can Google sidscardshop at any time to bring up a list of my 290 videos, and I think if you click on my camera icon above it will take you to my channel - not sure, since what I see and the rest of the world sees regarding my account is different. The back story to this song is actually a lot more wholesome than most would think! Dolly was signing autographs and she ended up signing one for a little girl named Jolene. Dolly loved the name and made sure to let the little girl know, Dolly talked about how she kept repeating the little girl's name in her head until she got back to the tour bus and that's how the chorus came about. Like she’s fought to be who she is and genuinely wants others to be who they are as well. She doesn’t want her light to outshine other people, and I think that’s one of the many things that makes her so appealing.

True. When Rhonda Vincent had a serious illness in 2005, Dolly travelled from Nashville to Rhonda's home in Greentop, Missouri to visit and encourage her. She's that kind of person. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6CzlX6gZdCChdU

Dolly is one of those singers that cross all genres. I'm a Metalhead that saw Slayer 13 times and I have a soft spot for Dolly.

The way she sings it here is so spicy compared to the older recording.

Agozie Ugwu I feel this is more confident and for entertainment, whereas with the older one she was hurt and singing from the heart.

I wonder if it’s a situation like in that book crazy rich Asians. One guy cheated on the perfect girl because life with her was too stressful. He was tired of feeling inferior (wealth not gender). Not to excuse it, just presenting one possible reason.

Big Dolly fan here, but never heard the song before. Thank you, Hacks!! I cannot confirm or deny that I’ve been singing this song into a hairbrush in front of my mirror every morning. 😉

I think this is the only song of this kind. She admits defeat so that she can win, I think I am not even explaining that well. What a superb song! She is still married to her husband, wow she is a legend!

Yep it’s a ballad many women can easily sing. So many beautiful sirens out there to tempt our husbands.

This story is just a joke. She has told the real story behind the song, many times. After a show, she gave an autograph to a pretty little red-haired girl, with green eyes. Her name was Jolene. She was inspired to write a song about her. The rest of the song is fiction.
@jbanks43755 жыл бұрын
Wrong! She did meet a little girl with the name Jolene with auburn hair and green eyes and later on, when her husband was interested in the bank teller she gave the name Jolene to her and wrote the song. Two true stories merged to write the song.
