The realization that your parents are more than just titles is a powerful moment in a child's life. It wasn't until i was in my early 30s that I finally understood that my Mom & Dad had a life of experiences before I came along. They were people with their own secrets, traumas, and sadnesses as well as triumphs and glorious memories. Understanding that helped me see them as full human beings and made me appreciate them even more.

I feel she this role slighty is more worthy of an Academy Award than her role in Misery (which was great, and her win was deserved). This movie just rings Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce all throughout.

I really enjoyed your analisys on these important scenes, like how Selena was trying to save herself by removing part of herself from the situation, how Dolores and Vera bonded, what was the most important thing in their lives, and also how people can see the same things happening in their home totally differently. I grew up in a physically, mentally and emotionally abusive household and that is exactly what was and still is happening to me. My siblings and I was berated, belittled and beaten by our father almost every day and our mother did nothing, she wasn't present, she was waiting in another room until our father finished. I have never in my life seen my father hit my mother once, only us kids and our dogs. Today I am very hostile towards my father, I am angry at him but still extremely scared of him, mostly just trying to avoid him when I am home. My mother doesn't want to listen and understand why I don't want to talk to him, she seems to have forgotten everything that happened (my father is old and weak now so he isn't physically violent anymore) and she is always pushing and emotionally blackmailing me to be nice to my father, to hug and kiss him and answer his emails. She says I should do it for her because I am hurting her by not doing it. I think she doesn't want to admit what happened because that would mean that she made the wrong decision by marrying him and letting him do this to us. Thank you for the reaction! This is such an amazing movie

I had a childhood trauma as a child seeing a guy died due to an accident. His face was haunting me and everytime I am in a lot of stress I would have nightmares about him. I would see him die over and over again in my dreams. I also am very afraid to drive. I went to counselling one time and this psychiatrist thought me how to repress my memory. I never really fully gone through it because the process is so daunting. You have to remember every single thing about that incident and then learn to zone out immediately. My nightmares had lesson and that incident triggered me less while I am driving but still not totally. So I could see how repressed memories could work in Selena's case. If people kept on denying things happened in the past + being an alcoholic + taking pills. Imagine how much damaged it does to your brain. Anyway, you were right. This movie is a masterpiece. Everything about this movie was brilliant, from the acting, lighting, music, the transition into flashback, etc. Brilliantly done. I also never realized it until you mentioned that Vera is not gonna let her go. She will help her but she will also help in a way that Dolores will have more gratitude to her and stay forever. It shows how such a controlling person Vera and fits her personality so well. Great reaction.

You are so right about how a family can live in the same household and each person can have a different experience. An example of that is Christina Crawford, daughter of Joan Crawford. Christina wrote a book called Mommie Dearest alleging that Joan mistreated her. Joan adopted four kids, a son, Christina and a set of twin girls. Joan adored the twins and treated them better than she did the other children. After Christina wrote mommie dearest, The twins denied all of Christina‘s allegations and defended Joan. Because they were not mistreated and were definitely Joan’s favorites, they claimed they did not see the mistreatment of Christina even though they were in the same household.

I don't know how I first stumbled across your videos but I am so glad that I did! I know the very first movie I watched you react to was Victor Victoria. I was so entertained watching your reactions! And your laughter was just infectious. Since then I've watched you watch many other films. I just watched your reaction to Deloris Claiborne. It's such a complex and emotional story and I was moved by the way you reacted to it. Your words were careful , thoughtful and wise. I had these issues in my family. My Father and one of my sisters. And you were able to imagine the incredible and extensive trauma heaped on to the victim and the enormous and long lasting impacts of that trauma on a child. Such has been the case for my sister for more than 40 years. I love my sister. It's beyond unfair that she became broken before she even had a chance to grow! That video, and your insightful words , had me pause many many times to simply pray for, and to cry for my sister. You can never know the exceptional burden that some people are forced to carry for a lifetime. So to everyone... Be kind. Be compassionate. Be thoughtful. And be there for people. Even when you can't understand why they struggle. It doesn't matter why. Be a comfort to those who need comforting. ❤

I will always love this movie. I love your Nigerian views about relationships between men and women vs. men and their children. This movie was about how wives were treated in the 1960s and 70s in America and when women started to take a stand against domestic violence and sexual abuse. Dolores was eternally grateful for the advice that Vera gave her about how to respond to Joe’s sexual abuse. Selena had to recognize what happened and empathize with what Dolores went through trying to raise her daughter in a safe environment.

YES! Vera could have given her the money easily! If Vera cared at all about Delores, she would have given her the money and protected her & Selena. You can't tell me the Vera couldn't have let Delores and Selena move into her house and hire the best lawyer for them. Any lawyer could have shut down Delores drunk, child molesting husband with no problem! But Vera encouraged Delores to do otherwise, because she murdered her own husband. Of course Vera only valued her possessions, I suppose she felt that possessions were the only things that wouldn't leave her, or disappoint her. And Delores was just another possession to her. So was it love or just a bond over mutual murder and need? You have to go deeper, because murdering someone cannot be the only way out of a bad marriage.

There's a little more in the book, but the book is literally just Dolores' recorded confession to the police -- the crime drama and reconnecting with her daughter is new for the movie and I like it, but you learn a little bit more about what is going on with Vera. By the end she is mostly paralyzed, has dementia and is only lucid maybe a day or so every couple weeks, but she also has TERRIFYING hallucinations that Dolores can only suppose what they were. But she has kids in the book and Dolores assumes they just have a strained relationship because Vera talks about calling them and sending them letters, only for it to be revealed later that they died years ago. It has been a long time but I THINK it is implied they were killed because they took out one of her late husband's cars that had been sabotaged. So she is living with the guilt of her entire family being gone because of her and is just in denial about it. Dolores thinks her hallucinations are about them.

I think about the bond of two women who know that they both killed their men for self preservation. You wonder if through all the years spent together, did they ever talk about it again, or did the days go by every single day without speaking of it. Dolores read to Vera Salinas clippings, so you know Vera felt vindication, probably even for her own choice with her own man. That was a gift to Vera who didn't seem to have her own children since she left everything to Dolores. I bet Vera and Dolores stayed away from talking about the deaths of their men, and focused on their hatred of that detective. That's why Dolores was so unimpressed and not intimidated at all when he was doing everything he could to prosecute her for Veras death.

Stopped taking to my brother for this very thing. Both living in the home both witnesses to trauma. But he denies any events took place.

Your comment about the different views people have of the same person ties in with a repeated theme from the book, “The inside and outside of a marriage aren’t much more than kissing cousins.” In the book, Joe never hits her again after she threatened him. But everyone in town thought he did. Dolores hits her arm while cleaning and gets a big bruise. A lady in the store sees it and says, “Ain’t men awful!” And Dolores has no clue until she thinks about it what the woman meant. But the lady assumed Joe had given her the bruise, even though she just hit it while working. The book really tackles the fact that you can be looking right at something and not see what’s actually going on.

After young Selena had a nervous breakdown, her memories dissociated - which is why she doesn’t remember anything about her father… So, she honestly has no memory of being able to do things like cooking. (I have similar “holes” in my memory: I’m “missing” an entire year when I was 12 yrs old. And, even tho I’m aware that I had been becoming a pretty good cook when I was a youngster… as an adult I could literally barely boil water.)

Abuse of females are examined by three characters- Delores, Selena, and Vera. Each we need to know about and each is vividly portrayed here.

When you feel nauseous and lightheaded, chew on some fresh ginger root. Not ginger tea not ginger candy but fresh ginger root. Take a few slices and and chew it extracting the juice. If you have a garlic press you can squeeze out about a teaspoon of it or more if needed this is good for lightheadedness.
