Today we're taking a look at NBA super teams in the last 20 years, how they've evolved, and what exactly a super team consists of. There is no consensus as to what a super team is seeing as to how I've seen people say the 2011 Mavs were a super team, yet somehow the Heat weren't. Either way this should be informational for you.

2016 Warriors in my opinion is not a super team simply because their players were drafted and worked hard to become great. Curry in 2009, Thompson in 2011, Green and Barnes in 2012. They've all been drafted by the franchise instead of being obtained via trade or free agency. Post Kevin Durant warriors you can consider a super team be that as it may.

Lebron joined the 47 win Heat ALONG WITH Bosh, who averaged 24 and 11 and carried the weak Raptors to the playoffs. We can agree that team plus Bosh wins at least 55 games. I consider a superteam a group of players who are superstars that come together. Boston big 3, Miami 3, cavs 3 and post Durant warriors. Team that build their stars internally are not super teams, they are just great players that have gelled. 80s lakers and Celtics, Jordan’s bulls, pre KD warriors and the spurs. Just my take on that. There has to be a line and I agree that not every dominant team is a super team.

None of those stars left to join the other great players of their day and they were able to get over the hump. Kinda cool if you ask me. s1 not exactly the same. Wilt joined the lakers in 1968-69 season with west and Baylor. But they failed to win any titles and were actually not a powerful team when wilt came over. Durant joined a 73 win team and won two titles right away. It took wilt and those guys 4 years to win one. Also in 1970 and 1971 Baylor only played 11 games combined. So I would say they were an attempt at a super team similar to the 2004 lakers when they lost to the pistons. They did well but failed to meet expectations right away.

Yes the cavs are without a doubt a super team. They have the best player in the league in Lebron James. They have two other superstars in Kylie Irving and Kevin love. They also have the most depth and best supporting cast of any other team. They have 3 fantastic shooters to go along with the big 3 in Kyle Korver, Channing frye, and J.R. smith. They have a backup point guard to kyrie in deron Williams who at one point was one of the best players in the league and could easily be the starting pg on most of the teams in the NBA. Just look at his recent 35 point performance when kyrie and Lebron rested. They also have a great rebounder and defenseman in Tristan Thompson. I also think I'm forgetting a couple of people. This can also be shown by the fact that the cavs have the highest payroll in the NBA, no other team costs as much.

The way I look at it, from the modern nba the super team era has existed since the beginning of the nba. The Celtics of the 60s had a bunch of hall of famers but they were all drafted or traded same with the lakers and Celtics and bulls of the 90s. Then you have the type of super teams like the 2004 lakers where they had two past their prime guys joining the team. Then there was the 2008 Celtics where it was 3 players who were at the back end of their primes. Then you have the 2011-2014 heat where all 3 guys were in their absolute prime. Then you got the warriors where it’s 4 players in their prime. The evolution just keeps going

I totally agree. The mavs had no other established stars (at that time) on that team. Most of the main players outside of dirk were either at the end or past their primes. I would put the 1995 rockets as best playoff run ever. 6th seed took the title by taking down 4 teams that averaged a hair under 60 wins each.

The 1998-99 Lakers were a super team. At one point they had Shaq, young Kobe, Glenn Rice and Dennis Rodman, but never gelled together because of chemistry issues. The next year they were also like a super team with the same pieces except for Rodman and with a super coach like Phil Jackson.

Why should we expect Cleveland to be good without LeBron when their entire gameplan revolves around LeBron? That doesn't make them not a superteam. Of course Cleveland would be a playoff team without him if they had a few months to practice and develop a gameplan. They definitely are IMO. 2016 Warriors are debatable. Klay probably isn't good enough to make them qualify. 2017 Warriors are the most talented team in history, and absolutely a superteam. Draymond Green is a superstar. Curry + Durant + Draymond is _by far_ the best big three in NBA history.

Dino Spumoni - on paper, they should win games but that doesn't translate to wins. They are lost on defense and offense without Lebron. The cavs have too many holes on offense and defense and they only have two ball handlers. The Spurs, warriors, and clippers are more stacked talent wise than the cavs. We all know without Lbj Kyrie would be just like the Kemba Walker on the hornets : make it on SC top 10 every night but he wouldn't win anything tangible. Most of their stars are injury prone (love and Irving) and the cavs role players are all above 30 years old. Cavs are an above average team with the greatest player ever (imo). You witnessed the past finals, it was basically a two man team vs the warriors.

+CR7 GOAT Like I said, the holes in their defense and especially offense revolves around the fact that their entire playstyle is built around maximizing LeBron's effectiveness. When LeBron is on the bench or resting, the Cavs collapse. But my point is, let's say LeBron, God forbid, was injured for the entirety of next season. If the Cavs had the offseason to construct a new playbook and new play style, they'd be a really solid team. Obviously not championship contenders, but they'd be an easy playoff team, maybe 4-6 seed, maybe capable of winning in the first round. Love would be the first option, we saw what kind of numbers he put up in Minnesota. And with all these recent acquisitions (Korver, Bogut, DWill) they might be the deepest team in the league. I agree with you that LeBron is possibly the greatest player ever, but I think you're underestimating the talent level of the rest of the team. Taking into account the recent acquisitions this is without a doubt the most talented team LeBron's been on.

by my definition, the difference between teams like the bulls and superteams is that the players on the bulls weren't superstars in the league when they joined the bulls and they were building a team from scratch. a superteam is (In my opinion) when a team gathers already established superstars (Kevin durant, LeBron James, etc) and goes into the season expecting to get far from day 1

Actually both lebron and bosh to heat was not like KD to warriors. Both of them was in a sign and trade in which cavs received 3 1st round and 2 2nd round and a chance of swapping that didn't get executed, raptors received two first and one of them turned out it be their now starting center so it's not like cavs and raps didn't get anything for return unlike thunder just completely gave up KD.

well I put it like this: there is a difference between a "Big 3" (or 4) and a "superteam"....in a way every team has a big 3=your 3 best players on the team. But they may not necessarily be a "super team", which is a team of all-stars with monster stats joined together on one team. this could be 2 or more players that are held at that regard..a super team can be put together or develop together

Pistons picked up Mark Aguire in 1988 (traded Dantly... added Aguire to Isaiah, Laimbeer, Rodman and Dumars). The year prior he was the man and had been a elite player in Dallas for 8 seasons. And no matter how the teams were formed... having Bird, McHale, Scott and Parish... or... Magic, Worthy and Kareem means that you have a pair super duper teams. Before adding Payton and Malone... there was this guy named Glen Rice who helped the Lakers win the 1st title of their 3Pete. He left because he wasn't a big fan of Kobe's shot selection.

A superteam is a team formed by acquiring established superstar players in their prime the *easy way* (i.e. not via draft or trade) and basically avoiding the mechanisms of league parity. The 90's Bulls & Rockets, the 80's Celts and Lakers, and even the '07 Celtics, are NOT superteams, they're just strong teams formed via actual team-building. Remember that the Celtics gave up almost their entire roster to acquire KG and Ray Allen.

Paul George in the Pelicans might be a great idea given what happened in the first round of the Playoffs against the Cavs. With two Big men with a wide range but who can also defend and attack the rim anytime, PG won't have to worry about losing bc of a guy who tried to hit the game-winning shot but failed.

I think what so many people look to is that Lebron, Wade and, Bosh all orchestrated in their prime to get a title. Granted free agency didn't exist before 1988. But I think people feel that back in the day, you didn't join up with some of the best to win a ring, you wanted to beat the best to win a ring. And old man Barkley, Malone and Peyton joined great teams to try and win one, but they knew they had their shot and this was the last way of trying to taste some of the glory. And although the 08 Celtics are a super team you can't forget Allen and Garnett were traded to the Celtics. I think there were super teams before, but the Heat just did it unlike ever before. The Warriors are a super team, but they did it mostly through the draft with the exception of Durant. Heck the Cavs feel more like the heat in that they orchestrated it themselves again, yes Love was traded but Lebron wasn't going to sign without another significant piece there like Love. I think Lebron, Wade and, Bosh just broke free agency and the NBA is trying to fix the problem of super teams to make it a little more competitive.

Good video, and I agree with you, the Warriors are a super team, but they truly built it themselves trough the draft (Klay, Steph, Dray, etc...) and then signed KD in free agency which was his desicion to join theml I can understand people complaining about his move, I don't wanna go into that argument. My point is that they didn't fool any team with trash deals like the D-Cousins trade. I'm really happy for hi to leave shitty Sacramento, but for real what kind of trade is that (still better than what the Thunder got for KD...), or a couple of draft picks like the Raptors got for Bosh... I'm not sure if I explained my point clearly enough...

If anyone says "The Warriors signed their superstars in free agency" they instantly need to be tuned out. The Warriors built their Team homegrown just like the Spurs, Lakers and the Celtics did, and had the cap space to sign a Superstar and did it just like the Lakers and the Celtics would have done back then if contracts were as they are now with free agency.

I consider a super team a team that was constructed by adding all-stars or super stars. I don't consider the 16 Warriors a super team. I don't know about Cleveland, because they did add K Love and added back Lebron, but Lebron did develop on Cleveland, I'm leaning toward yes the 17 Cavs are a super team though, no doubt they are great I don't really care how we classify them.

Also the Chicago Bulls did have Tonie Kukoc as sixth man and all star. Ron Harper a player that did average over 18 points per game 8 times during 15 year career before joining the Bulls. Injury did affect his game. But he was a very good player that didn't make an all star team bc he played in the same era as Micheal Jordan and Reggie Miller so he couldn't make the all star teams. So yeah add that type of help to MJ Pippen and Rodman then they should be considered a super team.

1 point I do not agree with... Kareem pretty much signed with the lakers. He wanted to move to la and he told the bucks that he wants to go to go to la. And if you say but the lakers had to trade players well either way they would have to make some room for Kareem by trading or cutting players for cap space so that isn't a good arguement
