I have never planted a food plot ever always made it a point to hunt around a nice stand of oaks or hickory trees so I decided I might try and plant one. I have no tools and not much cash in all honesty. I’m looking for advice on how I should go about making the ground ready for these seeds. I was thinking just go over it with a garden rake and tear the earth up a little scatter and see what happens but I would someone else’s POV

That is how we plant a lot of our plots to be honest. For sure do a soil test and see what the soil needs. You'll probably need some lime to help the PH and then also some fertilizer to feed the plants. 19-19-19 usually does the trick, but check our planting guides on the side of the jugs to make sure you're using the right fertilizer. This will be my 1st year using domain , just used throw and grow the last few years, bought smack down about a month about and can find what I did with so I bought big sexy Monday to put out this weekend, 🤞🏻 it does ok because I haven’t check the pH but I limed the soil heavy

New to food plots. When you add lime to increase pH, is it possible to put too much down? Whats the best way to add lime? Thanks!

If it is pelletized lime you'll want to put it down before planting and before a rain fall. You could put down so much that it doesn't really help because the PH that you have in the soil is already at a 7 or close to that. If you have a low PH and put A LOT of lime on it, there probably isn't any harm that can be done.

Try and avoid establishing when temps are extremely hot, late august or September can be a great time to establish Big Sexy!

@@anthonykontos7931 till anywhere from 1-4” - do you plant to spray anything for weeds or just till the area to prep? I like an even ratio fertilizer like 19-19-19 or something similar

@@anthonykontos7931 my preference…till…let sit for a few weeks. You will unearth weed Seeds when tilling…once they germinate kill them with glyphosate and then following that you can broadcast your Big Sexy in and roll or cultipack. In Virginia, Tractor Supply carries Big Sexy, as well as Sportsmans Guide and several independent stores. Appreciate it!

Is this a throw and grow?

No, Big Sexy is not considered a throw and grow and will do better with tilled up soil. However, with good seed to soil contact you can still get great germination out of this plot.
