Phenomenal clarity and execution. I still can’t believe that Scarlatti wrote over 500 of these. I love when he repeats a phrase like 5-6 times in a row before moving to a new idea. I don’t know any composers besides minimalists who would do that.

You're actually understating it. He wrote 555 of them. I've managed to listen to maybe 1/5 of them and almost every one of them are great. And even those that aren't great aren't even close to being clunkers.

Interesting comments about skill, and whether this young lady has talent or has worked very hard. Or both. (Obviously both). Now close your eyes, listen to the piece, how beautifully it was put together by Scarlatti, how playful it is, and how that is brought out not just with technical excellence, but actual understanding and depth of feeling. You may come away with a sense that Jennifer breathes the rarefied air of the very, very best. Thank you Jennifer Kim.

Fantastic! I usually find piano to guitar transcriptions lacking, but this sounds like the original. Amazing feeling and virtuosity.

Indeed, much of Scarlatti's work was likely inspired by Spanish guitar music, in fact you could consider him as the one who "transcribed" guitar tunes of sorts to keyboard 300 years ago. This piece starts right off with an Andalucian cadence in the 4th measure and every part of the piano score screams guitar. There's a really great 1-hour documentary about this by Scott Yoo which I highly recommend: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5TVfoCDZb2Yjqs

Some people fail to outgrow the well-worn technique vs. music scheme, as if perfect playing and emotional expression were mutually exclusive. I've heard all the performances of K27 on guitar on youtube, and to me, this is by far both the most musically and technically accomplished playing as of today.

maybe there aren't that many for guitar, although let me go check Smaro's. > musically accomplished Nothing against the player's accomplish _ments_ , but don't just use adjectives. Use verbs or nouned verbs. Where is the swelling and subsiding, the phrasing, rest and advancing? Slow down and _breathe_ , then bring it back up

This is the best... the only correct play of this opus that I have ever heard. Every pianist either plays it too fast, or too plain... without contrast, without cadence or feeling, all mechanical. Even the biggest names don't seem to figure out how to play this one right, but you DO! ...slow, fast, loud, soft... ah! Simply perfect.

For those who think her tempo is too fast, the piece is marked allegro. And the frequent hand crossings in the keyboard original also suggest a brisk tempo.
@nicholasrees1838
@nicholasrees1838 4 жыл бұрын
Tom, Allegro means Happy not Fast, that is Presto. I must say that I would slow this down a little. That is not to say that she does not carry it off well but perhaps a little more time would be good. Like too much Scarlatti this, IMHO, relies on excessive repeats in certain phraces though it is beautiful in parts.
@tompoore2081
@tompoore2081 4 жыл бұрын
The Latin root of allegro is “alacrem,” which also means ”brisk.“ And every music dictionary classifies it as a fast tempo. Further, if one plays K. 27 too slow, then the repetition you mentioned indeed doesn’t sell-it works better at a quicker pace. Finally, I’m not saying Ms. Kim got it right. I’m merely saying she’s not an aberration. Her tempo is within the norm. That said, I think many pianists play K. 27 too fast. (Don’t get me started on Michelangeli.) For my taste Robert Casadesus got the tempo right: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZeaoJuldqdoY6c

Consideraciones superfluas...
