It's funny how this piece is marked Allegro by Scarlatti and yet everyone is so outraged and offended by the fact that Michelangeli plays it fast as it was written. This performance invoke the brilliant Spanish guitar and everyone wants it to be swooning, slow and ridiculously romanticized.

Thank you, sir! You explained the distate and cringe I always get when I hear romanticised versions! He (Scarlatti) came from the Baroque Era, must be played quickly and vividly on most of his songs, specially because it was composed for harpsichord, which had no dynamic variations, but most of the pianists always insist on playing it smoothly and with loudness gradations. Go listen to Chopin, then!
@pneron20323 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY. It should be played with the Spanish guitar in mind.

Thank God the comments on this awe-inspiring performance are more gracious than other posts of this piece. I keep hearing "this is way to fast" or "this is mechanical". What the hell are these people smoking? It is supposed to be sprightly and not a "Marche Funebre". If people would take the time time to glance at the score they would realize by its very notation it is meant to be this fast. ABM is a genius and when i heard it, i went out that very day to obtain the score. this is miraculous.

For those of you, who complain about the tempo here, that's absolutely ridiculous. Scarlatti was not a romantic composer, just keep that in mind! Every other mushy performance on here it's unacceptable and heavily debatable. Scarlatti was a virtuoso. Scarlatti was not Chopin. Scarlatti was not Schumann. Go and listen to romantic music then. Michelangeli's interpretation is just perfect and flawless. Stop posting nonsense, guys, please and do some healthy research before over speaking.

For the Romantic interpretation, listen to Gilels's performance of this sonata. It is VERY different but not less beautiful. Theoretical stuff about style, "staccato & rubato" etc. is secondary, it is actually for those who cannot play themselves or for teaching students.

The metronome was invented decades after this sonata was composed, so tempo, outside of the 'allegro' indication, is a matter left to the interpreter's choice and to the listener's preference.

I keep warning you Geert, all one has to do is go to your channel and listen and watch YOU 'live' (since one may suspect a bit the recorded ones) to see that YOU certainly can be painted with this same verbal brush, however admirable your efforts to learn music and the piano may be...;-)

What an extraordinary comment! I hope it was just tongue in cheek and no meant seriously. The composer deserves the fullest attention. These sonatas were written for the harpsichord, so the percussive approach and the speed are more appropriate than attempts to be lyrical, however beautiful they may be. Correctly played the music certainly speaks for itself! Any musician who does not respect the composer is a thief.

There appears to be some argument over this performace and it's value, but I just think it's sublime. Most of Michelangeli's playing just flows over you so beautifully. There is another video on youtube of him playing Debussy's 'Reflets dans l'eau' and people criticise him again for being restrained and clinical, yet I think it's explosive precisely because of the restraint. It's like a bomb going off in slow motion. I'd rather listen to Michelangeli than Lang Lang anytime.

If you read Martha's biographies you'll understand she was a PHENOMENAL pianist already when she came to Europe and started studying under several Masters' guidance. As a famous teacher stated: "She was fifteen and pianistically had nothing to learn anymore!" And Martha's mother wasn't enthusiastic about Michelangeli as her daughter's so-called 'teacher' at all! So told me several weird things, while having a coffee in Paris. Regards, Geert Dehoux, pianist.
