Just as an aside the Hunter's Dagger is a renewing item, so you can buy them from Roah every time her inventory refreshes. You don't need to kill the Strange Ox. You just have a Mage Hand attack him while the rest of your party hides (I use the prison area). Once the Ox and the Tieflings kill the Hand you can talk to the Ox with the Hand's controller. He will have a low opinion of you, so open a trade window so you can give him gold, but instead his ring will be right there for you to buy for about 200 gold. That means you can still get the Hat of Fire Acuity in Act 2.

Dont kill that ox, just hit him, and disengage. You will lose reputation with him, but if you talk to him, you will get the "this person does not like you very much, maybe a gift would" dialogue. There you can trade it with him

I think this would be better as a Bard 6/ rogue 4/ fighter 2. Fighter gives you longbows, shields, archery fighting style, con save proficiency, all the armors and action surge. That is better than anything you get going bard 8. Also, you can get the ring from Oliver that lets you cast pass without trace. Gives you +10 to stealth and covers your concentration slot.

Yes I do this over and over even without this build. I go ranger rogue and get that sharpshooter feat. Having 100 multi target arrows and more than 1 action is OP

you can make it into melle build with eversight ring to make yourself immune to blindness , just go close to enemy disengage to make fog than enemy is blinded giving you advantage. i do suggest to turn off attacks of oppurtunity though as when youre hiding in fog and enemy passes through it you attack going out of hide mode. with more enemies you can die quickly that way.

Seeing as this is a thief build, it's best to use the level up/long rest resetting the shop method to obtain several elixir of hill giant which sets strength to 21 instead of using the club of giant strength. You can then equip a better weapon for melee that is either Strength or Dex based. You also get more inventory space. Also, if you're going to kill the strange ox, wait until Act 2. Another thing, disguise yourself as a halfling or make your starting race halfling to get lucky that rerolls nat 1s in the extreme case that you miss both dice rolls. Granted, it'd be better to just save before you steal something then just save scum the stealing. While alert is great, you could make your level 1 ranger to get longbow proficiency.

I love sword Bard build.... Solo'd honor mode with one... with that being said I have a few adjustments to your build that I personally would make, although I love the idea of going rogue for the bonus actions... Dream with me for just a minute: Race... Elf... Can't beat Longbow proficiency... The free cantrip can be any of the following: Minor illusion, Mage Hand, friends, light. Background, go urchin... But Halfling works really well here considering they have the lucky feat. With all of the checks Bards are rolling with slight of hand and being the face of the party (AKA Persuading, intimidating, and performing..) they can forego the Longbow, and opt with wielding dual crossbows instead? Sharpshooter and already having advantage in stealth checks as a lightfoot halfling means urchin is really strong from the get go (Lucky feat, and advantage on stealth.) Level 1 we're almost identical except I have charm person instead of jump and thunderwave instead of feather fall. Healing word is exceptional. I also have the friends cantrip instead of vicious mockery, but I do understand that vicious mockery is very BARD. Featherfall potions and scrolls are found way to easily to justify picking it. Heroisim, sleep, and tashas hideous laughter are really good picks for your other spell, but longstrider is a must. Disguise self you can get through the hat if you have the dlc... but it would make a fine level 2 spell choice. Potions of speak with animal, and scrolls of speak with the dead as well as the amulet found in the very beginning of act 1, guarantee I won't be picking those spells.. Level 3 is where you and I differ extremely.... Enhance ability (as well as all of the cool act 1 sleight of hand items you get) is where this build comes to life and you become the most busted thief as soon as you get it. Just cast Enhance Ability - Cat's grace on yourself and viola advantage on dex ability checks (Sleight of hand, acrobatics, stealth... but we're here for mostly the slight of hand.) If you are soloing this playthrough, then that means you can't cast guidance on yourself since both enhance abilitiy and guidance are concentration spells. But enhance ability lasts all day, so assuming you don't lose concentration, Cat's Grace gives you advantage on all dex checks, all day, so with all of the items you get in act 1 and expertise on slight of hand with a dex of 17-18 (Hag's hair) I was averaging about a 28-35 on slight of hand checks at level 3.... I was able to stealing everything... Excluding gold (even then I'd still steal their gold quite frequently) from any vendor with impunity. Steal all the powerful arrows, scrolls, potions and poisons, and supply packs that you can, long rest, and all of the vendors stuff restocks every night. Rinse and repeat, but your bard is also a beast on the battlefield, and I wasn't really using his spell slots for anything other than utility. Level 1, 2 my spells would be longstrider, healing word, thunderwave, sleep, charm person. Level 3 Enhance ability, and get rid or sleep at this point for something else. Getting Bard to Level 5 ASAP is super important as a swords bard so you can restore Bardic inspirations on short rests. Level 4... I went Sharpshooter. My final critique is: Expertise into stealth doesn't feel necessary.......... Persuasion and Slight of hand should be just fine.... But then again I haven't done this with levels in rogue.... I may correct myself later. I also love sharpshooter, so being so stealthy that you get advantage super often with 2 crossbows and flourishing shot seems even more broken than sword bard already is.... We completely agree on skills.... That is how you want to play and build your Bard... Urchin is absolutely the best background. If you aren't soloing, then shadowheart can still cast guidance on you... But after all that, I definitely want to try a Bard rogue combo.... Seems Broken!! Assassin and theif both seem crazy in combo with this. So I'm going to try this build out and come back to this video a few weeks from now: I'll tell people if I felt like it worked well. Dual crossbow lightfoot halfling Bard: Abilities were the same as in the video: 8 str 17 dex 14 con 8 int 10 wis 16 char Background: Urchin Cantrips: Minor illusion, friends Spells: Thunderwave, Charm Person, Heroism (Better cure wounds on self,) Healing Word Build order will go something like: Bard 4 (Swords Bard/Sharpshooter feet/dueling specialist) Rogue 4 Theif.. ASI Max Dex) Ranger 3 (Gloomstalker/Archery specialist) Bard 5 (Font of inspiration, Level 3 spells.) Instead of That final level into bard, maybe I could do a War Cleric level (sanctuary level 1 spell and bonus action attacks plus medium armor) Light Cleric Level (Warding flare, Sanctuary) or a tempest sorcerer level (Bonus Action Flight, Blade ward) or Ranger 4 for a feat to round off that odd final level. I will be excited to let you know in a few weeks how this build works, I suspect it will be one of my strongest ever. Thank you for the ideas and guidance!

You dont need to kill the ox. Get Mage Hand. Go around the corner near the entrance to the grove. Summon Mage Hand Go into stealth Break it from the party Fly to the ox and slap him Now when it dies go over to the ox with the person who cast mage hand Speak to the ox It will ask for a gift. Simply buy the ring. Save it till act 2 for the fire acuity hat.

the cats grace from the graceful cloth gives you advantage on sleight of hand already. I agree, swapping gloves for a plus 1 is meh, so I typically don't. But, for those difficult 17+ rolls, I'll swap'em out to decrease save scumage. =P

Killing Ox in Act 1 deprives you of one of the most powerful items in the game, the Hat of Fire Acuity which you can loot from it in Act 2. If you are going to use the diadem of arcane synergy then you might want to make sure that bard is the last level you took, otherwise it will go off your rogue spellcasting modifier which is intelligence. There's also an easier way to get the shapeshifter ring that doesn't kill the ox, have everyone but a hireling remain at the camp, send the hireling to start combat with the ox and let the ox unalive the hireling. (make sure the rest of your party is at camp so they don't get caught up in the fight) then have Withers resurrect the hireling and send them back to the ox with around 200 gold on them, have them initiate conversation with the ox and you'll have the option to make amends with the ox by giving them something, this opens its inventory which means you can buy the ring from the ox.

Three Levels in Assassin-Ranger is what makes this build insanely OP and impossible to catch. You also get to then add Pass without Trace which makes you a god for stealing lol. I was being listed as -1 yes thats a NEGATIVE one for rolls to steal things lol so you are guaranteed to steal any arrow, or scroll lower than Very Rare

Instead of gloves of power, there’s gloves of baneful striking that you can get from merchant outside the creche. That gloves will give 100% bane effect on weapon hit instead of “possibly” provided by gloves of power. Though this is the 1st time I know that gloves of power only works for branded characters

Just want to point out, as I am sure others have, you do not have to long rest using your food stores to reset the vendors but you can partial rest, using no food, and do the same thing.

Instead of relying on the chair leg which is near the end of act 1, use the vendor reset trick to get Elixers of Giant Strength (21 vs 19) from Auntie Ethel in the grove (have to do this before you venture south towards the swamps). Yes, she's hard to use stealth around/steal from, but just buy the elixers and steal money from the other two vendors to more than make up for the financial loss.

There are gloves in Act 1 called the Gloves of Thievery that give you advantage on all sleight of hand checks. They might not be combat oriented but my Astarion almost never fails sleight of hand checks now. You just need to take the shipment you get from the people that are being attacked by the gnolls to the Zentarim Outpost and give it to the leader (while its still sealed) and then the trader will be allowed to sell you them.

Gloves of Thievery are the best option until you've completed the Grove/Goblin situation and can go into the Mountain Pass without everyone dying. Once you have the Graceful Cloth they're relegated to the spare parts bin.

Duergar are the best option, because of the unlimited level 5 invisibility. I always hire Kree as my Scout/Thief, using a pretty similar build to what is recommended here. My tactician run my Tav is a Duergar too.

The trick with Darkvision is it treats the entire sight cone as a well-lit area regardless of actual light levels. The game's obscurity rules then react by saying it's an automatic detection.

Personally I would go with Bard (1), only in the early game for Disguise Self and the Shapeshifter Boon Ring. I would then respecc later on in the game as follows: Rogue Thief (3) Ranger Gloomstalker (5) Shadow Monk (3) Then add your final level to either monk or thief. You get disguise self from ranger level 3. So respecc at level 6. ALWAYS steal your money back from Withers.

Don't think it works, or at least not all the time. Because if you are hidden and the enemy didn't see you in their turn the battle stops and they all heal to max health. Some times they do sit there idle until it's your turn again but other times they look for you.

In his build he said he designed it so it works with every race, but only humans and half-elves get shield proficiency. Bard only gets it with the valor subclass, not with collage of sword. And Rogue and all other races don't get it at all with this build without picking an extra feat. Dual hand crossbow 5 Rogue / 7 Gloomstalker would be much better if you just wanna roleplay a thief i guess.

Level spells and class abilities have a damage level drop where is it stronger to add in another class to increase your damage. Level six abilities and spells do less damage than what a multiclass can do. An example is the Storm sorcerer 10 / Tempest cleric 2 build. They can do damage no other sorcerer can achieve. A full sorcerer is not even close with 6th level spells. Draconic sorcerer 10 / 2 warlock does slightly less damage but has better crowd control and survivability. This build is a stealth ranged attack build with great stealing abilities. The design actually works with any stealth stealing build. Shadow monk 7 / 5 assassin is an example. Every class will have a point where the damage of the spell or ability is not significant enough to keep leveling that class. It is because the damage is increased more by multiclassing.

i wouldn't use this build in tactician it seems underpowered, if ur playing theif u can go bard theif or rogue theif but u don't need to multiclass ur just stopping these classes from reaching their full potential, bard takes helmet of arcane acuity act 2 and band of mystic scoundrel act 3 and becomes giga powerful and every level in bard just means more encant/illusion spells and slots. rogue class is less reliable overall but can be a great damage dealer assuming you can attack with advantage every turn, since you are attacking with advantage and rolling big dice with stealth attack then taking all the crit items is probably the best build (you need longbow proficiency), this video also forgot to mention wielding the knife of the undermountain king, its BIS until act 3 the stealth mechanic is very unreliable due to many creatures having darkvision so depending on it to keep you safe from damage is a bad idea, this is why wearing the graceful cloth all game is not efficient and you should replace it with light armor as necessary, the bhaalist armor or elegant leather in act 3 are both very good for theiving, in honor mode remember to split the cash stacks and be careful who you pickpocket because some people will leave permanently if you get caught if you want to buy the cloak of brume from mattis you must convince Rolan to stay with the tieflings!

You can get the ring by attacking Ox with a Mage Hand while your party hides elsewhere. Once the Hand is dead, talk to the Ox with the Hand's controller. He'll open a trade screen and you can buy his ring from him. You kill him in Act 2 for the Hat of Fire Acuity, which is BiS for a crowd control build, notably on a Light Domain Cleric.

This is not the ultimate thief, from lvl 3 in act one just hire the halfling hireling and make her a rouge and max your slight of hand and stealth, and then find the smugglers ring, shapeshifters boon ring, the silver pendant, and if you have it the mask of the shapeshifter. then use shadowhearts enhance ability on the halfling, and with the pendant cast guidance on yourself, and shapeshift for the best thief to rob the emerald grove blind, almost never failing a roll slight of hand check… and when you hit lvl 4 in rouge just get ability improvement to get 18 base dex and itll just get faster once you get the graceful cloth. And if you picked thief and do get caught just send your party to camp before starting combat and just dashing away to safety

Hmm bit of a flaw with this. I started as an elf for long bow proficiency but swords bard/rogue does not give shield proficiency so unable to use equipment suggested.

Sorry this was an oversight on my part. Just skip the shield you'll be ok without it. Instead choose 2 weapon fighting style and equip 2 daggers. Build will still be op.

@@Firespark81 I think there may have been some mixup. College of Swords doesn't give you Shield proficiency but College of Valor does. Not turn if which college is more preferred Duelist from Swords or the Shield from Valor.

Duergar, unlimited racial invisibility at level 5. Halfling, lucky. Half-Elf, Drow or Wood. Light armor, shield, spear, halberd, glaive, and pike proficiencies. Either racial spells, or extra movement and stealth proficiency. You can hire Kree, Brinna or Varanna from Withers. Personally I hire Kree and Brinna. Prior to level 5 I use Brinna, because of the re-rolls for 1s (especially important in Honor Mode) and from level 5 I use Kree for the racial invisibility. Kree is easily my MVP. After level 5 Brinna becomes my camp transmutation wizard for casting daily buffs and refining potions and elixirs. Expertise in medicine from a rogue dip, and the re-roll 1s really helps get those doubles.

Sleight of hand is broken. Many buffs don’t work on it and neither does advantage. Guidance, shapeshifter’s boon, cat’s grace, proficiency and expertise; all not working. Testing others now but all of those have never worked across my many playthroughs.

The beauty of this game is there are multiple ways to get the same type of build. You can easily get the same items to work on a Thief Rogue 5/Archfey Warlock 7 for example without many compromises to utility. If you're fine with using the Darkness spell, you can even opt to skip picking up the fog cloak and perhaps take Rogue into Assassin for some really nice first strike bonuses.
