Heights native here. If you lived in the building right across from El Malecon, then you must have lived in what was my old building - 700 W 175th Street. I lived in apt 1G. I remember when the space occupied by El Malecon was a donut shop called Classic Doughnut. Though I left the Heights for FL in ‘85, I’ve dined at El Malecon several times when visiting back. Great food! During our last visit there, my wife had their mofongo, same as you had in this video, which was excellent. My MIL, who’s an ultra-picky eater, STILL talks about their mofongo - and she was there only once, 10 years ago! Great video, makes me miss my old neighborhood.

Great video. Thanks for showcasing this beautiful neighborhood. There are many Chinese communities throughout Latin America and the fusion of their traditional foods with Latin flavors is amazing. Chofán (the name) comes from the Chinese word for fried rice Chao Fan. In Perú, it is called Chaufa. All delicious versions of fried rice adapted to the local palates and ingredients in Latin America. As the dish changed and adapted in new places, so did its name phonetically change to approximate local speech patterns.

Oh awesome! So washington heights is at the top of manhattan. You can take the A train (uptown) and get off anywhere between 175th street and Dykman and walk along Broadway (to about 181st street)or St. Nicholas Ave. You can also take the 1 train (uptown) and get out anywhere between 168th street and 207. Honestly, if you look at a map and walk along any of the main streets between 168th and around the Dykman area, you'll find what you're looking for! Hopefully this helps 😊

Some serious eats going on! That rice looked like it wasn’t no joke & they didn’t get greedy with the shrimp either lol (one shrimp rule is a thing at some places btw lol). But yeah, NYC is on my bucket list for foodie adventures so I’m definitely going to sub and check out more of your vids. Keep doing what you do!

Yes the shrimp struggle is all too real lol. As a matter of fact, I went to a Chinese restaurant recently to try out some fried rice. They must’ve really liked me because they put 3 in there 😊 Most def will tap in with you for recommendations when I touch down out there. My first time going to NYC I could clearly see that food choices weren’t an issue. So many choices. Come to think of it, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on Silvia’s? I’ve heard mixed things about them but nonetheless know it’s a NYC institution. If you’ve been please do tell!

@@watitduful haha you got lucky! Yes, NYC has so many choices and I feel like I'm always finding new great spots that I can't believe I've never been to before. As for Sylvia's, I'm guessing you're talking about the soul food spot in Harlem. I've actually tried to go multiple times but there's always a super long wait! I want to go but honestly, I don't eat soul food often. I have plenty of friends who have gone with mixed reviews-mostly good food but very slow service. If I try ti out I'll let you know my take on it too!

I did didn’t I lol! Maybe it was the slacks idk 🤷🏾♂️ See that’s the thing about NYC’s culinary scene! It seems like it’s never ending options wise. I’m in the Bay Area and while we do have a reputable culinary scene it seems that NY’s trumps us a bit. One of the biggest complaints I get from my NY friends that live here is the pizza. I think it’s safe to assume that’s anywhere outside of NYC though lol. Yeah I’m talking about that Sylvia’s. Interesting! So the line itself is a tedious task. That’s wild but telling! I’ve heard about the slow service as well as customer service and the food quality. Either way, they must be doing something right in there. But yeah, definitely let me know your thoughts when you try it!
