Oh how I miss welding under old cars. The bitter sweet pain & smell of burning hair when a bit of spatter drops into your nose. The sheer delight when a blob of hot metal or burning underseal goes up your sleeve & sets fire to the elbow of your boiler suit. Such memories.

Hi Dom great video, regarding that “jacking point”, it’s actually merely just a point that the cars were used to be transported around the factory. Many people jack up mk2s and mk1s on this point, hence why they always tend to crumble and rot there. Looking forward to the future videos 👍🏽

I could almost smell the burning underseal as you hit it with the angle grinder. Flashbacks to the days of keeping wrecks on the road in my youth. I'd usually use a shutz gun for the underseal/stonechip. VW were never shy with the underbody wax and body cavity wax. Before I got my MIG welder I used to use the excellent Worthing Welding Services. Doug Newman always used to reckon to plate symmetrically, i.e., if one side needed a plate welding in he'd do the opposite side too on the basis that it wouldn't be far behind the piece he'd been called upon to replace and it saved everybody time and money.

It made me chuckle to hear that you were disappointed that such a new vehicle needed welding. It’s 34 years old! You would have loved buying old cars in the 70’s and 80’s. I had a 1966 Austin 1100 Estate in 1973 that was not only completely worn out mechanically but rotten as a pear too. One of its many breakdowns required towing home, it broke in two as they lifted it. Seven years old and scrap. This was quite normal in the day, that’s why I preferred 40’s and 50’s cars. Thicker metal.

Always loved the ook of the oriignal Caddy ... we sold quite a few back in the day but always seemed to be Mars Red, not the blue. Not so much factory ordering back then though so it was probably what they'd made most off and people bought what was available :)

Neat trick with the old ball point pen to thread the wire into the seal ✊. I’ve had a couple of opaque rear windows in convertible cars and successfully “restored” them using a standard car wax/polish as you would on the paint.

That was some marvelous rust repair, I have to say. Many moons ago, I was removing rust with a wire wheel in a hand drill and achieved the shiny, bumpy surface that you did. I got suspicious one day and scraped away at the bumps with a screwdriver only to discover that they were rust that I had managed to burnish to look like shiny steel. More scraping and sanding finally saw an actual rust free surface emerge, of course with many small pits remaining that still contained rust, but never mind that. You may have gotten a better result with that beast of a grinder you were using but I did want to share the experience in case you find it useful in the battle to keep vehicles alive, so to speak. 😊

Just a friendly reminder, you might want to consider wearing a face shield when using the wire wheel. I got one of those wires 11mm in to my right eye underneath the glasses about 15 years ago.. The lens inside the eye had to be replaced with a artificial lens witch has now partly disconnected so I'm waiting on a second operation and hoping they can attach a new lens again🙄 I still use the wire wheel but never without a full face shield when working in odd positions..

Hi Dom, I like the Biro trick 😀 THe last "window" I fitted with rubber gasket was an Ultimate Destination on the front of a Routemaster 'Bus. Despite using a string it took me a whole day to fit because its profile is so horrible; there isn't enough height to allow the sides to grip before it pops out ! I did it but.... All cars rust; some more than others because manufacturers don't paint the enclosed box sections or make the wheelarches self cleaning ! Good luck with the MOT.

Great work Dom. Rear window is the business, certainly compared to the old one. One of the cars I have restored was a 1996 Golf GTi and it was WAY worse than the Caddy. That rubberised underseal is just awful. It is on so thick that by the time you see rust the panel has totally rotted out.
