This reminds me of my old polo spent a good part of the summer transferring everything from an accident damaged one to a new(replacement) bodyshell, with my late Father. Ran it for the that autumn, rolled it in the first frost (I was only 19) and did it all again before Christmas. 😆 you can't keep an old VW down, your Caddy's the same blue as my second polo👍 found a set of Passat alloys fitted thought it looked great.

Always check the plastic seal plug in the middle of the drive yoke that covers the retaining circlip . If it leaks or comes out gear oil seeps down the splines and dilutes the CV grease and the joint breaks . Seen that more than once over the years working on VW s

3:00 Remember to put the rubber on first! Quite! I wonder how many oldies like me remember Duraplug 13A plugs. These had a cover with a loop through which the cable was passed. It was necessary to place the cover over the cable before wiring to the plug body connections. It was infuriating to go through the process of wiring up, only to discover that you'd forgotten to put the cover on first. As a result the overwhelming majority of Duraplugs have been cut to permit post-wiring fitting; at least mine have.

Hey Dom, I've enjoyed your content here and over the years on the Repair Shop. What year is the Caddy? I had a 78 (called Rabbit and Rabbit Pickup in the US) back in the early 90s. Bought it cheap, it had a junk yard hood (bonnet) that was red and the car was black. I painted that, changed a CV joint (seeing this video brought that back to mind), did a tune up and I was on the road. It was a bottom of the line model with no sway bars. I rode in a friend's GTI and it was nice. Rode and handled well. I had considered upgrading mine as it was rather squirrely at times, which wound up getting me in an accident. Damage was not too bad but I ended up selling the car. The young lady that bought it had never driven a stick. So I gave her a quick lesson while taking her home when she bought the car. She was a coworker of my wife's and when I asked her how the girl that bought it was doing, she told me her brother helped her with shifting and she was driving it everyday and was having fun with it. See ya on the next!

Hi Dom. The timing of this video is perfect. I am currently refurbishing the steel wheels on my Mk1 Golf. I have had them shot blasted and I sprayed them with epoxy mastic. Before I paint them I was contemplating weather or not to seam seal the joint, I already got an amount of the epoxy mastic down into the joint using a fine paint brush. Having watched this video you have convinced me to go with the seam sealant. Cheers.

Thanks John ! Wendy seems unusually excited by this Caddy, she's never ridden in one before, right Dom ? Look forward to refreshed wheels and tires, but that will of course demand you show the body and paint some TLC too ! More content, I'm guessing ? Maybe tape off the damaged areas and sandblast away rust to permit a good metal anti rust paint treatment with the familiar german paint used on wheels if it can be color matched, or tinted perhaps to match fade/aging effects well enough to be serviceable ?

I ran a Diesel Caddy for a few years 20 years ago, along with a Ifor Williams. If the water pump and housing was the original most of the bolts holding it together would have sheared off. The one with plastic impellor would have been a relatively recent replacement. Keep up the good work. T-cut on the rear perspex window will work miracles.

This vehicle's engine bay is very similar to the '78 VW Scirocco I had when I was 17-18 years old. I think it's same engine? I hated that timing belt tensioner... it was always going bad. I wonder if I overtightened it? Most likely I did. Could have also been terribly cheap parts from Pep Boys too. 😀

Powder coat is crap . It never adheres to the base metal as well as a proper liquid coating system. It's cheap and easy to apply a thick non-porous coat , but any damage to the coat will allow it to fall off.
