Glad to see a serious skilled mechanic wearing protective gloves. I recall being accused of being a 'bit of a Nancy' by a neighbour for wearing surgical gloves whilst kerb-working on my BSA A65 back in 1969! As I was working in print paste-up at the time, oily prints on the typeset galleys would not be appreciated😊.

I feel very sorry for folks with motoring issues who don't have a John to call on. He is very special. I've seen vids of diesel runaways on YT and found them quite funny, although surprising, and wouldn't want one to happen to anyone I knew. I believe running a diesel on petrol can be surprising, too. Thanks for the post, Dom - and JON!

Don’t forget that turbos spin at 100,000 rpm OR MORE at speed. The only thing the shaft has to rely on is the lubricating OIL. When you come off a drive do yourself a favor and let the engine idle for 1 to 2 minutes so the turbo can spin down before shutting it off. Give it a chance to survive, it will pay dividends on the other end.

With an 'older' vehicle, I always put a strong disc magnet on the oil filter, just to trap any metallic 'fines' in the oil. Ensures the metal bits stay out of the bearings and keeps the filter working longer...

I know of four ways to try to stop a runaway diesel engine, other than waiting until it's eaten itself; 1) Put it in top and dump the clutch, hard. Risky for the transmission but sometimes does the trick. 2) This one I learned from a Swedish owner, squirt a CO2 fire extinguisher down the air intake, it'll kill off the oxygen. 3) From a mate who rebuilds diesel engines, throw a duvet at it to try and choke off the air supply. He did this on a Mercedes Sprinter and saved the engine. Obviously sticking your hand over the intake could work as well but you might not want to put your mitt close to a diesel lump doing 5000rpm 😨 4) From the Belgian Fire Brigade who attended to a crashed Merc on the motorway. Chuck a wrecking bar through the sump! Obviously no guarantee that any of these will work, except #4 lol

I change my oil and filter on my Turbo engine every 4000 miles I do a lot of towing and I live in the wilds of Scotland where the temperature range can be quite extreme, I don't think you can ever change your oil too much on a Turbo charged engine I think anything under 4000 miles though is excessive and expensive, I always buy trusted oil, I like Castrol its been looking after me for decades now. I think you can get away with longer oil change intervals on non TC engines. I always check the air filter too and give it a vacuum as a clogged air filter also wears out a Turbo charger quicker

.....of course it broke down Dom....it's a Land Rover! It's why I no longer own one. It spent more hours being fixed than it did driving and costing me serious piles of money. No car is 100% reliable, but Land Rovers are absolutely shockingly unreliable. Turbo issues on Defenders are very common.....my brother went through several! Hope it's fixable.

Modern diesels with higher spec EGR systems have a throttle body on the intake pipe to the manifold, the TDCi has this, if the throttle is let off with revs, it closes and opens the EGR valve so it controls the percentage of exhause gasses reentering the combustion chamber. This is good as if the RPM exceeds the factory set limits, this valve should also close to limit air, and at that point, also limit any oil being sucked into the intake. thus runaway should be almost impossible. You're more likely to have a problem with oil going out of the exhaust and that creates a cloud of smoke. it'll also kill the catalytic converter and a DPF if one is fitted, mostly on vehicles after 2009. If you think the turbo has disintegrated enough to allow oil past the seals, then remove or even cut an intake hose, the engine will still run, albeit badly, but you will never get the oil through to the engine! 57 reg doesn't have a DPF so I'd be a bit concerned with letting someone work on a vehicle that doesn't actually know what he's working on! It's a CATALYTIC CONVERTER!

Vid title is hardly surprising, usually mine is just broken. I actually need to check the turbo on mine, the turbo cores are really cheep, I'm tempted to just change mine rather than waiting for it to need replacing. Ive not got any ac gubbins getting in the way, joys of farmer spec. Oh that big can down stream of the turbo is just a cat converter, not a dpf even if it looks like one, and has the transporter got a collapsed strut on the passenger side? Seems common for vw vans to have very broken looking suspension

so it was an oil feed pipe failure or a bearing failure or combination?. second thoughts, 'that sounds a lot better', i guess that bearing had been on it's way out for some time. is this where they say a hard run turbo ought to be left to idle to cool down before killing engine/shutting off oil supply?.
