Hey Rich a common problem starting with the TD5 is the injector loom getting oil seeping inside the wires between the insulation and the copper, going down to the ECU, and causing troubles (quick search will explain it way better than I did) It might be a good idea to proof it before going, i know from experience this WILL prevent the engine from running Usually the solution is to strip the wires and sink in epoxy to stop the capillarity

I was born into a family with congenital Land Rover ownership. They are not worth $100,000. The Puma wasn’t a great engine either but it was an improvement. It’s an economy bread van motor with boost delivered the next business day. The wire insulation in the engine bay was all cracking by the time we sold my late father’s.

@@DEBOSSGARAGE they cost more here (UK) than they should for what they are due to their "iconic' status and the clubs. When we were looking for a vehicle for the farm several kept saying we should get one. My dad's response after going for a tour of a farm in one that was 2 years old that already had gone through 4 handbrake cables, "I don't care what make we get but we are not getting one of those, I have been bounced around and thrown about for the last 70 years I'm not spending the next bouncing around like that, I'm not sure if I lost my teeth or back first!"

@@DEBOSSGARAGE actually only the Duramaxes have some value. Simply because Diesel Trucks are not registerable anymore within the European Union, they don't pass emissions. All others especially older ones are on pair with the US if you compare apples to apples... It seems to be more expensive, but they are most likely in better shape compared to those from the US, road inspections are a little more challenging in some European countries. US made vehicles normally don't pass tech on the first attempt even if new, their build quality is unfortunately so bad. When I was on vacation last time in the US I'd look after something to import to Europe, but there is nothing to save... So not worth the hassle...

I have a 2010 Puma 110 that I use when I am in UK escaping from the Canadian winter. Trouble free as yet, even though it is stored (inside) from May until November. I look forward to the Defender driving with each visit. it is so different than our other toys, and the Defender on-road cameraderie is great.

Yes a 300 TDI is extremely reliable and simple to work on. The best choice, but winch bumpers and lots of mods makes them overheat and become heavy. Keep it simple. Any 27 year old truck that's seen a hard working life and improper fixes over time will need some restoration to be reliable. Wiring looms become brittle over time and if left full of muck any chassis will get rust, even the later galv chassis rust if you don't take care of them. I got a new loom for my 300Tdi from a company called Sparks in UK, they remake looms and with some new lights there really is very little to go wrong. The 300 TDI is better for rough ground off road with good power at very low revs, the Td5 is more an on road cruiser, and a great Land Rover engine for cruising distances on the tar; and the puma is a ford transit van engine which does better for emissions. Show me a 30 year old Toyota Land cruiser with no rust, that has been caked in mud most of its life, and I'll show you my 1974 Series 3 88" Station wagon called Gigi which is still a daily driver, not fast, but she always puts a huge grin on my face and is great fun to drive. She has never even had the engine rebuilt; slow but fun. Not everything needs to be super powerful and fast, where are you rushing to in life all the time? If you drive so fast you miss what's all around you, and I always indicate to let faster drivers past. But often they will not pass me, because, I think, they like seeing the Scottish Highlands with a proper unmolested classic Land Rover in front to complete the picture, like what the Queen used to drive aboot in. It's a reminiscent like experience of another more care free simple times; because before we get plastered with massive wind turbines, the Scottish Highlands hasn't really changed much apart from a lack of trees. I use my Land Rovers off road in my small woodland restoring woodland habitat from what was farmland 29 years ago. So I need to be self reliant working in remote difficult locations. Compare a Range rover to a Land Cruiser, not a Defender, because these are serious no nonsense simple work machines. Their beauty lies in their simplicity.

Well said my friend. Another great feature is that for someone with a lead foot who used to challenge death often when I was young and stupid, these old Rovers force me to drive in a socially acceptable manner. My 64 IIA and 88 110 have done more to change my habits than a lifetime of speeding tickets and driving school penalties ever could.

We're deep into the era of "quantitative easing". Then a couple of years ago - the total amount of "money" was increased by 40%. This effects food prices first, then everything later down the line. Last years cheapest product, now cost as much as last years most expensive product. The quality of the products (all across the line) have become worse. Things made decades ago can in many cases double it's asking price. These trucks will reach 250K within this decade.

that 100k defender is what would be known in the UK as a County Station Wagon, which gets cloth interior instead of the vinyl seats etc, and carpets in many cases instead of rubber flooring. the Puma models run the Diesel engines from the Ford Transit in Europe, of the same era.

Funny how he mentioned power differences among same spec vehicles. One place i used to work there were two F450s exact same trucks. One was three behind the other on the assembly line. Both had exact same maintenance their entire life. The one would completely blow the doors off the other one for some reason

If you’re shopping for rovers. Look at l322 range rovers. You can have them pretty darn cheap these days (at least in the us) and to break one down and put the guts into an old defender or jeep or something would be an awesome conversion. 4 or 5 hundred hp depending on the year, standard locking diff and transfer case, full air ride, and a sophisticated offroad abs system.

No offense, there is ZERO CHANCE I would pay $100,000+ for a Defender, I would go to South America and buy a Land Cruiser 70 series from like Colombia or Ecuador or 40 series from Brazil or I would go to England or Continental Europe and buy a LHD Defender that is 25+ years old and import that for way less than 100K I could get a Ford Super Duty from Brazil, Venezuela, ect. with a 4BT Cummins and a ZF5 for like $20,000 and import it. I could get a Crew Cab Ford Ranger from Brazil, I could get a Chevrolet Omega Australiano with a 3800 SII Buick in it, that is a LHD Holden Commodore and do an LS swap. There are TONS of cooler things that I could do with $100k...even an 80 series Land Cruiser/Lexus LX450 from the southern USA is a better buy in every way than a Defender or an old Toyota HiLux crew cab with the D4D 3L I4 Turbo Diesel and a manual from a LHD country is a much wiser choice, it might require spending a few bucks an a vacation, dropping $20-30k on a prime vehicle and then using an importer then paying customs and taxes you are still going to be way ahead of a $100k Defender...likely you could get 2-5 interesting foreign import vehicles for the cost of one of those Defenders.

If you need a td5 ecu supplying immobilisation turned off could possibly help, main issue on td5 is the crank sensor and wiring to it when off-road, they’re fine in water but sometimes cuts out after a dip. the vibration of the engine damages the wiring and will show as a engine light after a puddle and won’t rev over 3k. In disco td5s the ecu can get wet causing the same fault. Generally let it dry and it’ll be fine but a sign the wiring’s tired. Oil in the injector loom also.

Here in the falkland island 🇫🇰 land rover defenders are still used but loads of us due to the off roading and the use they have. I own 3 300tdi and disco1 3 door pluss got a series 2a would never find a rover that is light to go over swamps if something needs fixing simply unbolt and fix td5 and the puma ones not so much as there run an ecu. Personal my favourite is the 200tdi but there hard to find. But evennthe old 2.5 and the older 2.25 were all good engines. It is a total shame they stop making them S they are so handy for us with tourist drives and farming etc

I had a 65 88. It was a remarkable vehicle with a chevy iron duke four banger. I put a warn planetary overdrive in it which doubled the amount of gears. I fixed a couple of panels that spanned from the rear to the dash and was supported midway on the middle bulkhead. I could stow this 'sleeping platform' on the floor in the back. With the four banger and gearing I could move a travel trailer between Gardiner, MT where I worked for the FS in the summer to Missoula where I was attending college. I traded a BMW motorcycle for the 88. One of the best deals I ever made. As life would have it, I met my wife and since I was constantly traveling between Missoula and Bozeman I traded it off on a Chevy S series Blazer which was one of the worst vehicles I ever owned and soon was traded off for a Toyota Tacoma.

Probably the millions of fans of the Defender and all old Land Rovers all over the world are suffering from some kind of paranoia. On the contrary, many commentators who have never driven such a vehicle know the real truth from "a friend "? or heard something, etc. In Greece I drive a Range Rover Classic of 1990, two doors. Quirky, weird, gorgeous and awesome to drive. In all the rides I've been on there hasn't been a single time that many other drivers haven't expressed their admiration. On the contrary, I never saw this happen with Toyota, Nissan, etc. I had the usual problems that an old one has. car I admire and appreciate Land Cruisers but in the mind and heart of every true adventure seeker there is only the (old) Land Rover.

I grew up watching Camel trophy, I actually still love the look and the feel of it but the engines are just really really shit. the lack of power is insane. It's great when you put the transfer case in low gears but on high it's unacceptable.

I have a love & hate relationship with land rover defenders the petrol ones were extremely juicy to run since they had twin carbs the newer ones are better since they swapped to diesel but there was one fatal flaw that was performance they always felt gutless especially when pulling a 3t load so much so they upgraded the turbo, i know plenty of farmers that gave these up because they weren't fit for purpose & swapped to Toyota/mitsubishi pickups instead. They're cool looking & the bodies are aluminium so you never need to patch any ratholes but that's about it I honestly wouldn't pay 10k for one of these let alone a 100k the people buying these have more money than sense.

300tdi is bomb proof. Just keep cambelt changed. TD5 suffered with injector seals causing fuel getting into the engine diluting the oil and then the engine failing so keep an eye on oil level. It also suffered with oil getting into the injector harness inside the rocker cover. The oil then capilary actions down the main harness into the ECU and knackers it. Other than that a great engine. Dont know enough about Puma's but i know you either get a good one or a bad one. Same engine as a UK Ford Transit so plenty of them about.
