He’s not telling him how the mafia works, he’s telling him so don can either agree or correct him based on his views of the life. EVERYONE GETS THERE CREW TAKEN WHEN THEY GO TO PRISON. DOM WAS UNDER THE SAMS ACT FOR MONTHS MEANING NO HUMAN AND OUTSIDE CONTACT. HE COULDNT RUN HIS CREW. ITS IMPOSSIBLE WHEN YOUR IN PRISON. HE FLIPPED CAUSE HE DIDNT WANT TO GET LIFE. Just like he keeps saying Mikey is a punk but in reality he’s the boss and when Vinny got arrested he didn’t promote Dom to boss. He promoted Mikey from underboss to boss and dom remained a captain DOM was a broke ex con when he got out of prison. Vinny made him a millionaire. Gave him the Bonnano family contacts in the unions and construction company owners so he could build his business up quick. Dom paid him back by giving him life in prison.
