Couple of things: 1) buying coppers unless its for a very specific strategic reason is never a good idea, as it weakens your deck overall. 2) there are ways of controlling what cards go where in your deck but mostly from cards in the expansions. 3) I am not sure that dominion has been superseded. Dominion is all about looking at the 10 stacks that come out at start of a game and trying to form a strategy, you can do this because there is very little hidden information about what your options will be in future turns (almost all other deck builders I have played, tend towards having a selection of individual cards, rather than decks) both approaches are fine but very different experiences. This folds into what you said about the first few turns of the game, on the contrary the cards you get at the beginning of the game have far more impact on the game as they get played more times. The early turns of the game is where you choose your strategy and try to figure out what the other players strategy is.

Not sure i agree with your overall analysis...sometimes copper is all you can grab so that’s a moot point. Secondly I’ve not played the expansions which I clearly state in the review. Thirdly I’m positive what I said about the first few turns holds true with regards to the core set as everyone begins with the same cards and the same options ergo opening gambits are limited. Really appreciate you taking the time to give your opinions which is what makes this pass time so interesting 👍

@@BoardGameBollocks I am saying that when choosing between nothing and a copper, nothing is usually the better option (the larger your deck is the less frequently you will see your best cards), occasionally you will get hands that you can't do anything with (particularly if the witch is in play and you don't have a counter). Having multiple hands in a row like this is not normal. The base set gives you enough cards to learn basic versions of most of the strategies but the game but the game also benefits a lot from having at least one other set. The relative usefulness of some cards is determined by how early they are acquired in the game (cards that trash cards from your deck are by far the most effective in the first few turns of the game), some cards become difficult to acquire late in the game (cards that give extra buys can be really useful in the late game, but if you didn't aquire them at the beginning you will often have to choose between these and much better cards or even points).

I used Dominion to get my mother into gaming. Yes, by design, Dominion is not a highly interactive game, but if you build the kingdom card market correctly, it can be: Cut-throat Dominion Intrigue: Torturer Masquerade Swindler Baron Mining Village Original: Moat Library Chapel Witch Festival

Trains is probably my favorite “Dominion+” game, but it’s not drastically different. Like you, I much prefer deck-building as a mechanism in something like Concordia

Thanks! It's refreshing to see these sort of reviews for older and lighter, but essential games.

Backatcha after your Legendary review. I'm a little surprised you didn't give this game a few more props for being a good way to introduce someone to the deck builder mechanic. I consider this very much in the vein of Stone Age. A great game to introduce mechanics. Like Stone Age, most the scoring is tense. However, it's a little bland since you just pronounce your total. There's no building up like there is in Stone Age. I'm a lot like you in that I didn't explore the expansions either, so... Maybe they added more scoring mechanisms? But even if they did, how is a new comer to the scene supposed to know which Dominion to buy? And I guess that's probably MY biggest criticism. There's like 12 of these boxes out there, why should I buy X over Y? This is another benefit of Stone Age. One box, basically no expansions (the one that's out there isn't worth the bother in my opinion, and probably impossible to find anyway), doesn't get easier. If you are playing this game with your mate and he says I love this, there's nothing more to explain, go get this box and spread the good word of board gaming. I have no conclusion, whatsoever, but I'll tell you, I really like what you are doing here, and should have a lot more viewers!

While my opinion of the game is admittedly much different than yours, I just don't understand this review. You freely admit that you haven't played the game much and don't truly understand the mechanics (buying copper!?), so why give a review? It's fine to not be interested in a game (even if it's popular), but just say that instead of commenting on the game play which you clearly haven't really understood. And I don't know anyone that only has the base game, even adding one or two expansions dramatically changes the game and does make it more fun and interesting.

Clearly you misunderstood. This review is for the core game not the expansions which you seem to want to bang on about. I think you’ll find I said I haven’t played it as much as some people which means I haven’t played it obsessively like some geeks. It’s not hard to understand dominion is it? Good grief.
