Thank you for making this video. I played Dominion years ago after a friend introduced me. Recently started dating a single mom with two kids and bought the game as a group activity but needed a refresher. I appreciate how your video is straight to the point, doesn't waste time with banter and jokes in explaining the game's mechanics. That's refreshing. Good work!

Hey, I've been looking through quite a few videos for dominion on KZbin. I've played once a few years ago and had a lot of fun, but recently got it myself. You're video is a little long, however it is one of the best out there to learn the game in full for those that don't know how to play. Thanks for teaching!

Excellent video! Played my first game of Dominion: Intrigue yesterday and was able to easily teach my wife after watching this. Especially loved how you addressed deck thinning, as it's a weird concept for most people to want to "trash" seemingly-helpful cards. Thank you!
@krazee_aznnn11 жыл бұрын
Great! That's what we wanted to do! Make the game accessible without a huge burden for "learning" or "figuring out" how to play. I'm glad it helped and that you enjoyed it. Deck thinning: Yeah, you just have to re-adjust your natural inclination to think that Coppers and Estates are useful cards. Sometimes they can be, but not usually. I have some other Dominion Strategy Segments on my channel, check them out if you're looking for more Dominion strategy. And of course, thank you for the compliments and thank you for watching!

***** I've already watched a few of the Shuffle videos (very cool and super useful!). After only 1 day of owning Intrigue, I'm already resisting the urge to pick up the original and a few expansions to experience more kingdom cards! I foresee this actually rivaling Seven Wonders as my new go-to game.
@krazee_aznnn11 жыл бұрын
Not going to lie... I like 7 Wonders, but apparently the game gets old with the same play group and a few expansions. Also, I don't like the 2 player alternative game of 7 Wonders. 3+ is really the way to go in that game IMHO. That aside, you can support up to 6 people in standard Dominion just by changing the number of victory cards (after you get the Base set). But the sheer possibility of distinctly different games is ludicrous with all the expansions... so theoretically never ending fun.
@krazee_aznnn11 жыл бұрын
They all have different themes, so choose wisely. Otherwise, let me know what you're looking for in terms of complexity or mechanics, and I'll let you know what I recommend you getting.
@rsterner1111 жыл бұрын
***** I've read up on all the of the sets, and I'm thinking about purchasing them in this order: Dominion (vanilla), Dark Ages, Prosperity, Seaside, the rest in a yet-to-be-determined-order-with-Alchemy-last-or-never. How's that sound? As for 7 Wonders, there are absolutely nowhere near as many permutations for random game possibilities (or possible strategies, for that matter), but I find that it's easy to approach a game differently based upon your neighbors/tablemates. I play pretty frequently with the same people (at least twice a week ranging from 4-7 people), and it still always feels fresh to me. However, I do absolutely love the game, so I'm biased. Cities expansion adds a great Dominion-wreak-havoc-on-your-opponents element, which I also love. Leaders dictates your strategy tremendously and unbalances the game pretty horribly, so I'm not a fan of that expansion. I have 13 boards (Wonder Pack and Cities expansion), and I'd love to pick up the costly ($99), yet possibly epic, Lost Wonders fan expansion through Boardgamegeek that comes with 27 extra boards and some new goodies. There's also the Myths pack which is free to download.

Yeah, of course. If you purchase the game, you run it the way you want. Though if you watch any of my strategy segments, very rarely do all 10 Kingdom cards get bought. Shuffled Kingdom cards would be very interesting, but there is a variant on it with the Dark Ages' Knight cards. Difference being: 12 stacks won't change the game. Shuffled stacks lend to luck; less predictable and winner may win just due to luck, not skill.

Intrigue is fine. I like the Base set too- depends on if you want more thinking complexity or ease of teaching other people. Intrigue has more techy combinations of cards and more thinking involved. The Base set is simpler and has an easier card pool to teach with. Both are fine- I like the game enough that I eventually ended up getting both anyway. Thank you for watching!

I felt like we were as thorough as we were going to be. I think the idea we wanted to capture was that someone could watch this video and start playing. For the most part, the people they're playing with can clarify on the rule further or the game mechanism (if playing online) would take care of it for them. There are enough resources that everyone can look up the rulings they're curious about. Suggestion: you can make a criticism video about this to clarify your points?

Thanks. Sorry, "money" is a habit we have in our play groups- but does it really detract from the concept of teaching the game? We go over trashing at 6:47, gaining at 6:10, and the various "money" cards at 3:15. I don't remember exactly when we talked about "Up to" VS Exactly, but I think that might have been somewhere between 32:08 and 52:19. We didn't really go over "reveal VS look at" because we only have the one action card which revealed (Moat) none which "Looked At".
@Alandric191111 жыл бұрын
The reviews are all really good for this game and I wasn't sure about getting it. I watched 2 other reviews/overviews/plays and was a bit hesitant as you only get to pick from 10 different cards per game which seems limited and awfully boring. I was under the impression that these 10 different piles of cards all had random mixed cards in them :( I still think I might buy it to give it a try. Thanks
@krazee_aznnn12 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mostly play card games and board games as an activity with people. I use Androminion (an Android Dominion app) to test out theories and card interactions before I play with my friends/play groups. Mostly a thing too because I personally like collecting cards.

Great video! As a new player, it definitely helped me understand the game better! What brand of sleeves are you using for your cards?
@krazee_aznnn8 жыл бұрын
+minuet77 Thanks for the compliment! Well, these particular sleeves in the video are standard sized penny sleeves (there are a lot of brands of those). But Dominion cards are Euro-standard sized sleeves. So if you're looking for the best sleeves, you'll probably want to get FFG Euro-standard (purple color code) if you want the best fitting/best sized options for Dominion cards. The obvious drawback is that they are more expensive than penny sleeves. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

I can imagine. I never intended to say it would be to the benefit of the game, of course the game isn't balanced around your own rule set and shuffling cards will certainly lend more to luck. But it did seem that the lack of those two points at first seemed to initially scare Andrew off. That's my only reason for suggested gameplay :) Also, if I'd only get one expansion pack for a long while, which would you recommend? Thanks!

Something I've always wondered about Throne Room is that the rules specifically state that when an Action Card is played twice due to the effect of Throne Room you must resolve all of the effects of that Action Card, in order, before then doing each of them again. With this in mind, if you play Throne Room into another Throne Room, it logically must follow that the second Throne Room gets played twice BEFORE you're able to select a THIRD Action Card from your hand to get played twice from the effect of the second Throne Room. Only after that third Action Card is resolved twice can you then play a FOURTH Action Card from your hand to be played twice (again as a result of the second Throne Room). Due to the way this works, I've been wondering if both the third and fourth Action Cards need to already be in your hand when the second Throne Room gets played twice. If I, for example, play Throne Room into a second Throne Room, then play a Smithy, I would then draw 3 cards twice (6 cards in total). If one of those 6 cards is another Action Card, am I allowed to play it twice or am I not allowed to since it technically wasn't in my hand when the second Throne Room got played twice? That is my question.
@krazee_aznnn2 жыл бұрын
This is a great complex interactions question. I'm going to tell you right now that I'm probably not the best authority for this answer, but I have an answer that is probably acceptable. For future reference, I think the best places for these kinds of questions are the site boardgamegeek.com/ because there are discussions among board gamers there (that also sometimes include the developer as well). Here's one that discusses the Throne Room on a Throne Room, but doesn't quite specifically answer the question you have: boardgamegeek.com/thread/762572/double-throne-room My opinion on this matter based on my understanding of the rules is that: you don't need to have all the cards already in your hand for all the Throne Room "resolutions". If during one of the Throne Room resolutions you have an action that will draw you cards, you can use any of the action cards (even newly drawn) in your hand for a subsequent Throne Room resolution. That is my answer. Thank you for watching and thanks for the question!
@jacobwansleeben33642 жыл бұрын
@@krazee_aznnn After thinking about it a little more, I realise that you resolve the effects of each card before moving on to the next one. So in my example, if I play Throne Room into Throne Room, the second Throne Room will be played ONCE initially. In that one initial play, I can play another Action Card twice before the second Throne Room is played a second time. At this point, I'll be able to play another Action Card from my hand twice, even if it's one I only just drew as a result of the last Action Card. It basically works in the opposite way to playing Omniscience into Omniscience in Slay the Spire. Omniscience is a card that only lets you play a card twice that is in your Draw Pile instead of in your hand. And if you play Omniscience into Omniscience, you pick which two cards are ALREADY in your Draw Pile before either of their effects get resolved. Omniscience is also different the sense that the played card(s) are then trashed afterwards, or 'Exhausted' as it's called in STS.

Another question, the mill card is an action and victory card? Does that mean it counts as a victory card at the end of the game? Like a duchy or estate?
@krazee_aznnn5 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. It can be played during the course of the game as the action, but it also counts as victory points at the end of the game for what it's worth (in this case, 1 VP). So it is strictly better than an Estate, because it is an Estate with an effect.
@SB-il6og Жыл бұрын
If you have 4 buys and you ran out of money after the second, why don't you take 2 extra copper? You can discard the copper with a mine card. Great video btw!!!
@krazee_aznnn Жыл бұрын
You are correct in that if you have 4 Buys and use all of the available money by the second Buy, you can purchase Coppers for the 3rd and 4th Buys. Depending on your deck build, you might want to buy extra coppers, but in many deck strategies, adding additional coppers to your deck will make it worse. The primary limitation with adding Coppers is that you still only have a 5 card hand. Even if you are using Mine to eliminate Coppers, it is more efficient to use Mine to get Golds from Silvers. Having more Coppers will dilute the value of cards in your deck, you might not be able to Mine away all your Coppers as quickly as you want to. In a game like this, the speed at which you get Provinces is the most important to winning.
@rt2wshpMyWay8 жыл бұрын
Nam Ngo, HELP! We just had an argument over the Gardens card. How is it counted at the end of game? Some felt it was 10 cards get 1 VP (30-39 cards=3 VP), others felt every gardens card multiplied the sets of 10 in the deck (30-39 cards=3 sets x3 cards = 9 VP). Which is correct?
@krazee_aznnn8 жыл бұрын
EACH individual Gardens card is worth 1 VP for EVERY 10 cards in the deck at the end of the game (which should also include each Gardens). I feel like what you are describing is correct in both cases. If you only have 1 Gardens, it will be worth 3 VP for having 30-39 cards in the deck. But for 3 Gardens, each one will be worth 3 VP, which equals 9 VP. There is no multiplication involved as far as Gardens are concerned, but each one is counted separately and adds to the total VP count individually and multiplying 3 by 3 is the same as 3 + 3 + 3. Basically, if the deck had 30-39 cards, and 3 Gardens, the score for all 3 gardens total would be 9 VP (each one being worth 3; each Gardens is NOT worth 9 VP, which would be ridiculous). I hope that answers your question.

Good video, I really enjoyed it, can we use Militia twice in the same turn?
@krazee_aznnn10 жыл бұрын
You can if you play a card that grants you +2 Actions. You have one action normally to play per turn. Let's say you use it playing "Village" which grants +1 card and +2 actions. Then you would have your additional actions to play "Militia" and then "Militia". By contrast, if you had used your initial turn's action for "Militia", you would no longer have any actions to play a subsequent "Militia" on that same turn. Thank you for watching!

So all the cards are discarded after the persons turn? Not like a whole round with all the players? Also as far as the curse cards go, the witch card must be included in the kingdom deck to even use it, right?
@krazee_aznnn5 жыл бұрын
Yes, all the cards in your hand will get discarded at the end of your turn (and you will draw back up to 5 cards before you pass your turn). In the base set, yes, Witch it pretty much the only card that really uses Curse. However, later if you end up purchasing and incorporating future expansion cards, there are more cards that interact with Curses. In any instance in which you have a card that refers to a Curse is when you include them in the Kingdom.

@krazee_aznnn11 жыл бұрын
Hello awesomely long usernamed viewer! LOL I like it! Anyway, to answer your question, Dominion is closer to a board game rather than a card game. If you purchase the Base set, it has enough stuff to support a 4 person game. If you get a second set with starter cards (Intrigue expansion, for example) you can play with up to 6 people (officially), though I bet you can play with 8 (mathematically)- but that would get a little crazy.

How do u set up the board? Don't skip the basics
@krazee_aznnn11 жыл бұрын
Setup: Create card piles of: - 30 copies of each coin (copper, silver, and gold) - 8 or 12 copies of each victory card (depending on 2 players or 3-4 players respectively; estate, duchy, and province) - 10 entire piles of your selected Kingdom cards (minus the randomizer card); usually 10 copies each, but some cards (such as Rats) may include more than 10 copies of that Kingdom card Setup is something they do pretty well in the rule booklet, so I figured that part was better explained there.

What sleeves are you using?
@krazee_aznnn12 жыл бұрын
I am just using Ultra Pro penny sleeves. Nothing special. Jeremy and I discuss sleeves that we use for Dominion in "Strategy Segment: Dominion Shuffle episode 4" at about time index 15:22. I'd link it, but youtube doesn't allow URLs in comments. You can find the video on my channel or through a youtube search.

someone explain to me why victory points go in the deck. they dont do anything, why dont you set them aside so it doesnt fuck up your economy?? that way the smaller victory points actually get bought instead of just sitting there the whole game.....
@krazee_aznnn10 жыл бұрын
Ultimately, only Donald X. Vaccarino can tell you why he designed the game that way. But I think it's a great mechanic for balancing the game and making it a GAME, and a great tool used for statistical analysis; as opposed to just a formal exercise that is pointless. Take this situation for example: - start the game with 10 coppers - each time you purchase any victory cards you don't put them in your deck With that situation in a 4 player game, the game will last for only 3 rounds in which each person purchases a Duchy. If you do NOT buy a duchy, then you only have one or two turns at most to use any card that you purchase in the first two rounds because of how much time left in the game. If you opt NOT to purchase a Duchy, the person who goes first would get 1 more Duchy than everyone else. Victory point cards don't do anything because they are a natural throttling regulator to make the game fun by giving all players time to do more things than just purchase Duchies. I would wager that, perhaps you did not think your thought all the way through before posting such a comment. So I would request that you try out your version of the mechanics and see how fun that game is. You could have asked it politely, but you chose not to. : P
@trickykid300010 жыл бұрын
***** I have and it its makes it more fun, you should try it, cause two player can get a bit repetative, except that it has maybe a bit less strategy (and also if no one takes duchy's at the beginning). It also makes the game quicker, its the same way that i hate militia, its annoying....its those mechanics that just tend to slow the game down, and for people who arent hardcore gamers, begin to lose interest. I also play with 14 stacks of 7 card piles, to also add variance. three rows of 7, (1 row of money/territories/trash and 2 rows of kingdom cards, if you take out the curse cards and any kingdom cards that have curse effects are also removed in a two player game when we play) thanks for the reply :)

How do you store the sleeved cards I'm currently using a yugioh tin
@krazee_aznnn8 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, storage becomes a huge issue when sleeving cards. I actually have all the Dominion expansions sleeved up. My sleeved cards all fit in one gigantic Dominion Big Box (www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-RGG-425/dp/B003Y737CO) with some cardboard dividers and some empty deckboxes from other games as spacers.

Ill be nice this time. The issue that i have with this game is that 2 player feels very thin. Its just a race for actions, buys, draw cards, and mix in a few money lenders (my favourite card) and thats it. my girlfriend tried to use curse cards, mine, etc and I beat her horribly. (which is why we removed the curse cards from our two player games) The problem with most two player games that we play is that its hard to end up with both people having fun regardless of who wins. summoner wars comes closest, because its fun to play the different factions. I cant really think of any others, except for magic the gatherings epic battles. In dominions case, its hard to tell whos winning until the end so its hard to strategize, although i do the same thing every time anyway. Whats your favourite 2 player game?
@krazee_aznnn10 жыл бұрын
Dominion actually has different gameplay styles with different numbers of players (if you want to win). In this case, you are correct. 2 players is more of a race, and all about out-pacing your opponent or screwing with them more than they screw with you. The "thinness" of gameplay that you feel is subjective, as some people are considering it a "fun quick" deckbuilder game. Curses: In my Dominion Shuffle episode 4, curses play a big role in that 2-player game: Strategy Segment: Dominion Shuffle episode 4 Oh man, Jeremy really wants to teach me Summoner Wars! But I've never played. He loves it though. You can tell who's empirically winning if you keep mental count of precisely how many victory points everyone has. Harder to tell "who has a better deck/engine", so I guess that's the difficult part. Hence why I have more strategy segments on my youtube channel for getting better at Dominion. ***** wow that is a thorough response, thanks! I just got netrunner but I havent braved a game yet. I will have to watch your tutorial. I most likely play it first with an old mtg friend before i introduce it to my girlfriend. I have definitely heard good things. I will have to look into the other ones you listed though, cant wait.

Yeah, oddly enough, a lot of Magic players I know love Netrunner. I still have yet to teach my wife how to play Netrunner. Other than that, I have some other tutorials for some of those other games: Pentago, Quarto, Quoridor. Those are more quick-play "coffee table" type games. Easy to play, easy to teach, and typically plays in less than a few minutes. Good luck, and have fun.

@krazee_aznnn11 жыл бұрын
To be honest, most of the excitement of this game comes from optimizing your deck. Buy too many action cards, and you never get enough money to buy Provinces. Get too much money and not enough actions cards and someone else could be purchasing more victory cards faster than you because of some unseen combo. Really, the talent comes in knowing some statistics and picking the right cards to streamline your deck to be the best in that game.
@Flea_ip12 жыл бұрын
Good video. I just wish you'd stop saying "money" and use the real terminology of "coins" :P Also just a suggestion (maybe good enough for a whole different video?), would be to explain the differences in terminology that can be confusing to new players, such as Trash vs. Discard, Reveal vs. Look At, Buy vs. Gain, Coin vs. Copper/Silver/Gold, "up to" vs. "exactly" (such as in Remodel). I know you did cover some of them in this video though. Still, nice work and very thorough.
