John Corfas the one handed shot guy was a Greek American who used to play for PAOK. All his shots were one handed, even the three pointers. He had one of the highest percentages from the free throw line at the time and he was a bulldog on defense standing on 1meter74cms.

Those Teams created the glory Greek national team of 87 and 89. Aris try to capture the Euroleague Title at 3 F4 and PAOK at 1 F4. It was at the Early 90s that the Clubs from South, Olympiakos, and Pao, take the Lead of the Greek Basketball.

Nice video. Yes, that was the chant that the Oly fans were singing for Wilkins. Dominique wasn't overweight. He was fit and his body was like a bodybuilder next to the players of that era. One other thing is that the friendly game that was packed, is a game that Wilkins didn't play well, but he managed to do an amazing follow up dunk at the end of the game that got everyone from 0 to 10 of excitement in a sec. Generally he had a rough start in order to get used to the slow pace and the short spaces and of course the zone defense of the European basketball. But after mid season he started being the Human Highlight Film and he was good and crucial in most of the games he played. The coach was a huge issue for him though... some other notable NBA Players' that played to Panathinaikos 1996: John Salley (NBA Champion with the Pistons) 1997: Byron Scott (NBA Champion with the Lakers) 1997: Dino Radja (from the Celtics) and not forget to mention Rony Seikaly before he joined the NBA
@willingexile3374Ай бұрын
Seikaly practiced with the team and played in invitational tournaments but he could not play in the Greek league because foreigners were not allowed to play until 1988. Seikaly was a competitive NBA center once he settled into the league, and was signed as the replacement center after Shaq bolted the Magic. He was pretty decent but just paled in comparison to Shaq's dominance. Then he broke his foot and that pretty much ended his career.

Based on the FIBA or today's Euroleague rules, the match should have been stopped when the clock froze and played from the side. So in reality, neither the block or Barcelona's basket ever happened.
@kostaschatzidakis82897 ай бұрын
I think this case is sad but very simple. The clock has stopped, so according to rules Barca must start her offence from out of bounds with 4,9 seconds remaining. We can say it is unfair (although i prefer to say very unlucky) because they had an open fast break. The basket should not count because the clock stopped before the fast break. I am not sure about the block though. It is obvious that with todays rules the basket should count but i dont know what the Fiba rules back then were saying (actually here in Greece there is a huge argument about this). Finally, it is very unfortunate to say that this clock mistake was very common back in those days and it had happened again in the last seconds of another Euroleague final (Batalona vs Olympiakos 1994). In my view, PAO was better at that final (there were some controversial moments against both sides because of the two refs as you correctly pointed out) and they won it fairly.
@georgemarco117 ай бұрын
did you even noticed the clock stopped exactly when it was finally clear the spanish guy got the ball alone in the fast break..!? and started counting again when panathinaikos was set on def...!!? now, you can't tell me this was a clock malfunction, there's a hand involved there.... a greek team had to win one at that point, and we all saw how greek b.ball evolved after that (the market was already very big, arenas was fuller than anywhere...) and yea the rule was the same. don't know about previous mistakes, but job was already done and almost everything goes to hell cause giannakis steps on a wet spot... that simple
@kostaschatzidakis82897 ай бұрын
@@georgemarco11 With all the respect but manipulating a game by stopping the clock doesnt make sense (too much digging i believe). If you want to fix a game then the refs should take over. The refs didnt do a great job for both sides, probably because they were only two and they tried with some bad calls to control the game. For me the most important thing are the teams, Pao played better in that match except for the last minutes. I strongly disagree about Greek basketball. Greek basketball was already at elite level in Europe from the 80s. Both Greek clubs and national team had great achievments (Aris going to final four, eurobasket 1987 etc) and as you said the market was already big. Just because a Greek team didnt win a Euroleague (they actually won other Europe cups like Saporta before that one) doesnt mean that Greek basketball was not already succesfull. That 1996 eurolegue was not only the beginning for Pao and Oly to conquer but it was the epitomy of a huge effort from Greek basketball that started from the 80s.

lol at "part time basketball players". Economou was probably the best Greek offensive player for a couple of years during mid to late 90s, while being a great cutter, with great insticts for offensive rebounds despite his lack of athleticism. Good shooter, great footwork, fakes and generally excellent offensive IQ. Alvertis has been one of the best catch and shoot shooters Europe has ever seen and his shot was essentially unblockable. Giannakis in his prime was battling with Galis for scoring titles in Greece, but even while he was 300 yo he was still a serviceable traditional point-guard, a great defender and one of the best hustle players. Vrankovic, while he was probaly a top-3 defender during that era in Europe, would probably be the one whose game wouldn't translate well today. He had a good hook shot but nothing more than that and he was too passive offensively despite being tall as hell. Fasoulas for example had a much better offensive game while providing great defense too.

Wilkins was down on the NBA after being traded to the LA Clippers at the trade deadline in 1993-94 season, the first season of Michael Jordan's first retirement. They were in position to get the Eastern Conference's best record at the time of the trade. He signed with Boston for the following season, but the Celtics were reeling from the recent retirements of Bird and McHale, the departure of Parish, and the death of Reggie Lewis. Dominique secured a release to play in Greece after being invited by Panathinaikos top brass. He was the highest-paid player in Europe at the time of his signing. I don't remember all the details of how he ended his stint in Europe, but I know it wasn't on the best of terms because Panathinaikos didn't with the Greek championship, and Wilkins reportedly quit on the team. He returned to play with Spurs for one season when David Robinson was injured and San Antonio was tanking to win the Tim Duncan sweepstakes. That Panathinaikos stint was his last shot at glory, because after being released by the Spurs, he played a short time with Bologna and then retired during the lockout season of '98-'99 with the Magic.

Vrankovic took rebound at 36.5 sec, so at 6.5 the shot clock should have been stopped and Barca has the possession out of bounds in a 5 against 5 situation. So if the basket had been counted, panathinaikos would be the team that would have been stolen. Thats the only truth about this game.
@demetfr7 ай бұрын
1. at 5 seconds where Giannakis falls he is fouled and the shot clock expired anyway so the play should have been whistled dead; 2. on the block, yes it does touch the backboard, however the fiba rule at the time was even if it does and the ball is still in an upward trajectory, which it was, the block was legal so it's not goaltending and 3. the game clock stuck at 4.9 seconds for what seemed an eternity. In conclusion Pana would have had more grounds for appeal than Barca so the right team won despite this comedy of errors

Even if the stop from Jankovic was illegal, the shot should never have counted. Even if you ignore the fouls on Yannakis and Korfas , Panathinaiko's 30 seconds were over when the clock got stuck but the horn never blew giving the ability to Barcelona to have a fast break on an empty court in 5 seconds. If we go with today's standards and do a forensic analysis on the game, Barcelona would have had to score on a 5 second attack against a set defence. Instead they were given a fast break on an empty court with the timer not running.

I' m not a Pao fan by any means, but I don' t think that 1996 Pao would have been destroyed by 2024 Pao ; they' re teams from different eras, so if these teams faced each other with rules such as 30'' shot clock or hand-check rules that allowed harder defense and true physicality then the 1996 would have most likely won. The 2024 would be faster, I give you that, but it' s not like they'd have a larger rotation either. Plus , take a look at the personalities, Giannakis ,Dominique, Vrankovic, Alvertis on the on hand, just Nunn on the other.
