I'm honestly a little surprised that this is what got him fired. After all of the things that have caused a controversy, this is what does it? I mean I understand both perspectives. I understand that a lot of people in Canada see poppies as a sign of respect, but I also see that these veterans fought for people today to have the freedom to choose what to do. I do believe Don Cherry chose poor words, but I think he should have gotten a chance to clarify what he meant. It is a slap in the face to fire him today. If I had to fire him I would have waited, at least until tomorrow. I know it's a hard discussion and I don't want to jump into a left vs right issue, I just wanted to share my piece, and hopefully everyone can be civil in this comment section.

It was not a case of him being misunderstood, he said exactly what he meant. Now the fact that like 35% of the country agrees with him and doesn't like immigrants is a whole other thing though. He admitted in a later video that he should have said everyone should be wearing poppies and that he should have at least had the opportunity to correct himself and apologize for narrowing down migrants. The way it was handled was poor. I grew up with other immigrants, many of them white Eastern European migrants and we all bugged each other growing up and grew thick skin. Later on we all ended up very close friends and laugh about our childhood behaviours. Kids are formed by their parents ideas, they are not at fault. Don comes from a different time where saying things like this was acceptable and no one even batted an eye. You can’t expect a senile 85 year old man to be politically correct all the time. During the Korean War at the Battle of Kapyong, Colonel Stone, Commanding 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2 PPCLI), and his men were surrounded by hordes of enemy Chinese Soldiers. Defeat was imminent for the Canadians, as they were trying to keep the Communists from entering Seoul. Colonel Stone radioed Artillery to fire shells on his Battalions position, knowing he and some of his men would be killed. When this started, the Chinese ran like hell to get out of there, and 2 PPCLI were spared, as was their mission to protect Seoul South Korea. Col Stone was a good man. I may not have all the facts correct here but I believe I'm right. Col Stone lost very few of his men during the Korean war. For his and the Battalion's bravery in this epic engagement, the Battalion was awarded the U.S. Presidential Citation. The 1st foreign Regiment to be awarded a citation like this by the Americans. The Chinese probably, were thinking the Canadians were crazy. Anyone can feel free to correct me on this. Given the circumstances I doubt he had much choice in making the video considering Cherry has been synonymous with Canadian hockey for 40 years. I agree with Cherry being fired but this video highlighted the things he's done in the past both good and bad. How this situation snowballed from what could have been a well intentioned message encouraging Canadians to support their veterans to a xenophobic rant that he refused to apologize for. How he's been outspoken against Russians and Europeans in the past and how he's been a supporter of animal rights groups and junior hockey throughout the country. Don Cherry has a legacy, warts and all. I've disliked him for his opinions on the modern game and his disdain of foreign players in the past. To me, what Shannon highlighted is a fair interpretation of both sides of the coin.

American here, so it’s possible that I don’t feel very sorry for him because I didn’t grow up with him. He’s not a part of my culture. That being said, choosing poor words is not what I think he did. What he did, from my outside perspective, which you may or may not care about, is that he made a distinction between those from Canada, and those not, without getting specific as to what that means, and then implied that those not from Canada, or “you people,” as a whole, do not support the veterans of your country as much as those who are natives. It seems like he grouped together a whole bunch of people who don’t even know each other and made assumptions about their behavior based on their immigration status or length of time that their family has a history of living in the country. I don’t think that has anything to do with choice of words. Thoughts?

Also weird how some can't see the similarities between a world war 75 years ago and a country whose people are being slaughtered today. Immigration issues started over Syrian refugees, but no one actually seemed to give a shit to consider another country might be going through the same shit we wear poppies to remind ourselves not to forget..

The real question is, if it were Nazis killing Syrians mercilessly in a war we still don't understand, would people with your same mindset still be opposed to them immigrating? I just think, if people are going to throw around the accountability and consistency arguments, they shouldn't ignore all the consistency and accountability issues.
