I’m a third generation Chinese-Canadian and stand by Cherry’s “controversial” remark. “You people who come here” applies to everyone who comes to Canada, be it Africa, Europe or Asia, white or coloured. It’s only people who are overly-sensitive who think Cherry meant races other than white. I agree with Cherry that all immigrants (and Canada is a nation of immigrants) wear poppies to support the brave men who died for our freedom.

Ron never made a wrong move throughout his career. His partner tripped over a new coffee table every single week. People act like Cherry was fired due to one remark. That triggered it, sure. But it's like NHL suspensions: Cherry had been saying off-color stuff in front of millions for years. Times were changing; Cherry was incapable of changing with them. They got rid of him. People were upset about it, but they were wrong, and life moved on. As it always, always does. Hockey Night in Canada never needed Don Cherry. It doesn't need anyone. Cherry simply had the privilege of sitting in one of its seats for a while, and he decided, "Well, I'll talk about how unpatriotic I think immigrants are." Honestly, everyone should only be surprised that he wasn't fired sooner. He treated that seat like an entitlement.

For decades, starting long before Afghanistan, Cherry made MANY trips overseas to visit with troops deployed. He didn't just hang in the big bases where all the officers lived with their officers' messes and where all the comforts were. He went out to the nasty little FOBs. He didn't just stop long enough to shake hands: he ate with us, hung around with us, played some ball hockey, asked troops about their families and ambitions - and talked hockey of course. He never treated any soldier any differently, no matter what their ethnic background. He DID single out immigrants - he was effusive to discover any soldier he was meeting with was an immigrant who had enlisted. They got more than their share of his time and attention. This is the man we spent time with that the race-baiters here and at CBC want people to believe is a racist and xenophobe. Troops that aren't Caucasian and troops that are immigrants will be right in the front row of those condemning what CBC did to Cherry - and MacLean for helping them do it. Gutless MacLean sold out what little soul he has. He spent 35 years traveling with Cherry, eating with him, essentially living with him during hockey season. He knew as much about Cherry as Cherry's family did. If Cherry actually was a racist, MacLean would have known that long, long ago. And knowing Cherry was a racist, then MacLean was a coward and wrong to not go to their employer and tell them he was not going to sell his personal integrity and honour to live with and work with a partner he knew to be a racist. He never complained to CBC that they had partnered him with a man he had come to know was racist. If Cherry WASN'T a racist, MacLean would have known that as well. So knowing that Cherry wasn't a racist, and yet sitting silently while the man who called him "friend" lost his job while their employer fired him for supposedly being a racist - yeah, MacLean is contemptible scum with no personal integrity and honour for sitting silently and helping their employer drive a knife into Cherry's back. This ain't hard. And MacLean deserves nothing but contempt, either way. Along with the race baiting assholes kissing MacLean's ass, who like Maclean call Cherry a racist - despite never having spent any time with him, only because CBC and other Useful Idiots made that claim.

My family came to Canada in the late 80s and I remember Don Cherry's name on the lips of everyone at my highschool. While I think he would never refer to himself as a 'hero,' he meant something to millions of Canadians over the years. He was and is important to them. How we treat our heroes says alot about our priorities. That should not be taken lightly and its a sad state of affairs when all that is cast aside over mere words and opinions.

That's a great media spin, but unlike the Americans who had Pearl Harbor attacked (to which they responded by nuking millions, so call that what you will), Canadians were fighting for other countries. I hate saying it, but it was never our freedoms that the first two world wars were over. With the amount of time it would have taken to get to Canada, Nazi vessels would have been depleted and annihilated. We fought and died for European freedoms, and immigrants are probably in a better place to admit that. Hell, we've lost more troops in the Middle East, and there won't be 'world war Iraq' TV movies and poppies. It's very much a case of Canadians standing with allies, not for themselves. And the suggestion that our own rights and freedoms were being trampled is just false. The biggest obstacle to North American freedom was the governments over here that depleted local work forces by conscription. Democracy is such, that one will attack another country to defend an ally, even to the detriment of that assisting country's citizenry. It was easy to want to fight the Nazis, because of the atrocities our soldiers were hearing about, but it was never 'our war'. Our leaders decided that for us. People want to talk about how shitty our governments are now, but imagine someone saying 'the bad guy needs good guys to fight him' and believing that before dying for another country that basically just hung you out to dry when it was done. It's not like 'hero' did anything for those guys after the war, save maybe that 'it feels good to do good' feeling. Were you not sat in a classroom for 12+ years and preached to about the value of fighting for 'our freedoms', maybe you'd see that most of those soldiers were manipulated into fighting in battles that were never actually theirs to begin with.

@@richardchang2332 Immigrants or not people who have moved to Canada should show more support for the country they're in there wasn't anything bad about what he said the "Media" as you said took it the wrong way because this generation is easily quick to judge instead of actually seeing all he has done for the NHL/Canada and take one comment/rant and decide the man is a disgrace. It's not only the people that fought and died, although they obviously gave the ultimate sacrifice. We also have to remember that each and every one of those who went overseas to fight in the world wars gave up 5 years of their lives to defend freedom at the very least and many more came back maimed. I agree with you that so many people couldn't give two shits about what they did for us, and quite frankly, there are so many that are not up to the task or willing to answer the call to defend our freedoms today when they are under equal threat, even to the point of not even wanting to be informed of that threat. On the contrary, the vast majority of people want to sit at home and pretend it's business as usual and carry on with their lives as they have all of their life taking our freedoms for granted, never mind actually putting their bodies out there as a means of showing their opposition at the very least.

I started watching HNIC in the late 1970’s. I still remember Peter Puck!! I used to watch every game on Saturday and beg my parents to let me stay up to finish watching the western game because it was way past bed time in Ontario for a little kid. As time went on, I still watched but would watch the late news to get all the highlights from the night’s games. From mid 1980’s onward, I could name at least the top two lines on every team and knew every main goalie for every team and every enforcer in the league. One of the lockout/strikes really bothered me when Jeremy Roenick did an interview and claimed that the NHL players were absolutely no different than any other working men; just trying to get what is fair for their families. Yeah, really relatable to regular working guys.. considering he had just signed for almost $6 million per year at the time! Well, I had just started getting back into it when the Don Cherry firing happened. When Ron McLean helped throw Don Cherry under the bus, I vowed to NEVER watch another NHL game. Since that vow, I have never watched more than a glancing view if it happens to be on a monitor at a pub or a restaurant. As a matter of fact, I just found out a few months ago that Las Vegas had a team. I thought my buddy was pulling my leg when he told me that Las Vegas won the Stanley Cup. He knew that I had sworn off NHL hockey forever, so I thought he was joking with me. It still seems ridiculous to me that Las Vegas has an NHL team; which just goes to show how out of the loop I am; and I don’t care. I can name ONE player in the league and that is Connor McDavid, though I wouldn’t know his photo to see it. I could attempt to name others but there’s a chance they retired years ago; or they could still be playing. Regardless, I just don’t care. Think about it…. The only loyalty in hockey comes from the fans. The teams will send fan favourite players to another team if it makes business sense. Players will leave one city for another for a higher paying contract. Coaches leave from one team to another the same as players do. The ONLY loyalty is from fans. I got sick of being taking for granted and walked away when the NHL walked away from Don Cherry; and burned that bridge as badly as they could; along with his name, reputation, legacy, and all he did for hockey in Canada. I think what hurt the most was watching his friend, Ron Maclean, grab a leg along with the CBC (whom he made millions for) and throw him upon the altar of Cancellation.
