Recognized (right off) from all his work in John Wayne movies, love to find “Character Actors”, they were the ones that always worked, liked them the most, the common guy, one of us (not really, just felt that way). First let me say, great video, Santee.... Don was one of the best....was wondering why they don't make any good westerns anymore....if you do happen to find a modern day cowboy movie, they have aliens or vampires or zombies or the movie is so low budget it's just hard to watch...and then there are the ones made overseas.... no just no..... I saw a cowboy movie so low budget recently, they were using Smith and Wesson model 10 revolvers instead of Colt single actions... where have all the good westerns gone ???

For far too many young people they have no idea what it means to be a man and the Western, and in many ways human, values we grew up with. Great tribute for I just learned of Don Colliers passing. To me, Don will always be known as the Hubba Bubba Guy, At my age as a child watching Saturday morning cartoons It was his commercials that made the old west and gum cool all at the same time. My wife and I were just watching a rerun of the Young Riders when we saw Don as the Shop Keeper. Of course to us, we both said "Hey its the Hubba Bubba Guy" My wife then reminded us that her Mom had always has a crush on Don Collier. To me, like said in your video, he was just like John Wayne his style of acting and his complete "machoness." is that a word? Anyway this was when we learned of Dons passing it was a search on "what ever happened to the Hubba Bubba Guy" I am getting a bit long winded here, so ill just say "RIP Don and im off to the store to buy some Hubba Bubba to think of you and how you played a role in my childhood."

Don was one cool dude as the loyal ranch foreman Sam Butler on my all time favorite TV western series, "The High Chaparral". I also remember him as the famous "Gum Fighter" in commercials for Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum back in the 1970's. In his post-Chaparral years, he and his onscreen brother on "The High Chaparral" actor-stuntman Robert "Joe Butler" Hoy made a cameo appearance on another popular NBC western series, "Little House On The Prairie" in the second season episode called "The Runaway Caboose". Don played a crusty railroad engineer and Bob was his fireman. Bob got into a fist fight with Pa Ingalls (Michael Landon) after the latter jumped on board the engine to try and stop the train from colliding head-on with a runaway caboose carrying Mary and Laura Ingalls and their friend and neighbor Carl Edwards. Once Bob spotted the runaway car flying down the tracks towards them, Don brought the train to a screeching halt and then backed her up so that she would match the speed of the oncoming car which then hit the front of the train twice before it hooked successfully to the engine's coupler and bringing an end to the children's wild ride!
