Ich war zwanzig Jahre und habe ein Drittel meines schmalen Monatseinkommens für den Besuch der Donkosaken ausgegeben. Den Rest des Monats gab es den nackten Daumen auf das Brot. Ich würde es bereuen, es nicht getan zu haben. Für den Rest meines Lebens wusste ich, wo ich hingehöre.

Auch ich bin heute 69 Jahre alt und habe diesen einmaligen Chor als Zwanzigjähriger unter seinem Gründer, dem genialen Serge Jaroff gehört. Diese Klasse hat keiner der vielen Nachfolgechöre je auch nur ansatzweise erreicht. Schon gar nicht die Stimmqualität unter Jaroff. Mir treibt ey immer die Tränen in die Augen, wenn ich diese alten Aufnahmen höre.

I attended a concert of the choir in Australia in my youth, and they have been a part of my life forever. My family had many of their recordings and sang along many times. Not the religious music, but their renditions of folk songs.

Although we have Cossack on our Ukrainian side,to be the devil's advocate, here is something for you to chew on. I hope you are not calling me a liar. Russian Cossacks The native land of the Cossacks is defined by a line of Russian/Ruthenian town-fortresses located on the border with the steppe and stretching from the middle Volga to Ryazan and Tula, then breaking abruptly to the south and extending to the Dnieper via Pereyaslavl. This area was settled by a population of free people practicing various trades and crafts. These people, constantly facing the Tatar warriors on the steppe frontier, received the Turkic name Cossacks (Kazaks), which was then extended to other free people in Russia. Many Cumans, who had assimilated Khazars, retreated to the Ryazan Grand principality (Grand Duchy) after the Mongol invasion. The oldest reference in the annals mentions Cossacks of the Russian principality of Ryazan serving the principality in the battle against the Tatars in 1444. In the 16th century, the Cossacks (primarily those of Ryazan) were grouped in military and trading communities on the open steppe and started to migrate into the area of the Don. Cossacks served as border guards and protectors of towns, forts, settlements and trading posts, performed policing functions on the frontiers and also came to represent an integral part of the Russian army. In the 16th century, to protect the borderland area from Tatar invasions, Cossacks carried out sentry and patrol duties, guarding from Crimean Tatars and nomads of the Nogai Horde in the steppe region. The most popular weapons used by Cossack cavalrymen were usually sabres, or shashka, and long spears. Russian Cossacks played a key role in the expansion of the Russian Empire into Siberia (particularly by Yermak Timofeyevich), the Caucasus and Central Asia in the period from the 16th to 19th centuries. @@MrErrolLovering Not calling you a liar. Don't confuse Russian as being same as Ruthenian from Kyivan-Rus. Miscovite took the Russian name (I think Peter I) when they betrayed the Cossacks in the fight against Tatars.

@@MrErrolLovering Cossacks were cossacks. They didn't identify themselves with either Russians or Ukrainians. Ethnically, they were probably a mix of everybody who ever lived in or close to those steppes, including Khozars and Polovians.

@@Alexander_Zemsky Я думаю, в ответе имелась в виду запись Панихиды, сделанная в 50-х годах. Там уже и Шандровский, и скорее всего Михалик. А на фото (это наверное 1923 ?) нет их.Там первопроходцы, те братья по оружию Жарова, которых он собрал в хор в лагере интернированных.
