Don Ellis' led one of the most progressive big bands of this time period as evidenced by the time signature of this tune!!! Heck this would be progressive if played today for the first time!!!

I got to meet Ralph Humphrey at a don Ellis tribute band concert years ago. I told I really struggled not getting lost in this piece since I had no sheet music. He told me not to worry, “everyone gets lost”

Tenor player left his fave mouthpiece at home (dammit!) and had to borrow one that didn't fit his cork (had to wrap it with paper). Love it!!!

Just heard the music of Don Ellis for the first time this morning. Man! I dont usually like 'big band' type sound but the dynamism and sophistication is just brilliant - and still sounds fresh today. He seems like a gifted and visionary musician

There's a good documentary about him, if you can find it's worth the watch. Super interesting musician. It's some of the only big band music I actually enjoy listening to!
