Awesome, Thanks for doing a profile on this avocado. I have a tree I just purchased from Lagoona Hills Nursery. I purchased it without knowing anything about it.

Hi Greg, I also made a DG video. I went back and watched yours and I know exactly what you are talking about and appreciate it all the more afterwards. I agree that it is an interesting avocado but the flesh seems to be less than perfect.

Hi Greg thanks for doing this profile on Don Gillogly . I purchased 2 trees from Laguna Hills nursery in March . I have heard that they are not a big tree . It would be great if you could profile your friends tree . I had heard about this variety but didn’t know anything about the fruit quality,.

Hi William, Good to hear from you. I'll profile the tree when I get the chance. As for the tree's size, it's about as vigorous as most avocado trees. The claims of it being dwarf are certainly not tree of the tree that I know.

@@gregalderdotcom Greg thanks for responding to my question. There isn't much info online about this variety. I did see pic of what was supposed to be the original tree and it appeared to be around maybe 12 feet tall ? I thought that I remembered from the promotional add that it was described as dwarf , good for container culture and multiple blooms each year . So who knows ?

I have this tree myself which I bought from Roger's Garden nursery in Corona Del Mar, CA and brought to the Inland Empire. It took about 10 years before it finally started fruiting! But in part, that might have been because we transplanted it to a different location where it gets partial shade between me and my neightbor's home. It now fruits twice a year and the fruit is so creamy and delicious, I'd say maybe even moreso than a Haas. People love it! I don't know why this guy keeps saying how challenging this fruit is to cut. All Iyou have to do is cut the neck off first, peel and cut before working with the more bulbous part. Nothing hard about it! Also, unlike what this guys says, I find the texture amazing and smooth. Again, super rich and creamy. I love that it fruits twice a year, so that's a big plus! Also, because the skin is thinner, it is much easier to peel as compared to Haas. I hate how Haas has a smaller window of time in which you can peel the skin before it becomes very thick and crumbly, then you have to try to scoop it out with a spoon. I prefer peeling the skins to scooping them out as it has a better presentation this way. Hope this helps.

Hey Greg - LOVING your videos. I've decided to start caring for a large avocado tree in our backyard - prob 20+ ft tall (we're renters in LA). Curious if theres anyway I could shoot you an email with some questions and pics of it to get your help identifying what type it is and some other questions I have? If not no worries but let me know! : )

Hi greg i have a quick question hope u can help after about 5 years my reed finaly fruited . The fruits have been on the tree since last may. When can i harvest them? Im in Montebello 10 minutes east of downtown LA
@gregalderdotcom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Omar, Reeds taste good starting now. I've been picking a few the last couple weeks. They'll taste even better in August though. Mine start to get overmature sometime in September, depending on the year's weather, so I usually pick all mine by the end of summer, and I think your harvest window in Montebello will be similar.

@@gregalderdotcom thankyou for your reply. These are the first avocados from my tree and im eager to taste but want to make sure im not picking too soon.

I love your Video, I have a few questions to ask you . I love avocado have two holiday one Sir prize , lamb, Hass and reed. Why my sir prize have flowers but no fruit!? where can I buy a Gem avocado to add to my collection, I live in San Jose ca. Thanks a lot
@gregalderdotcom4 жыл бұрын
Sir-Prize trees are often slower to fruit than other varieties so you probably just need to give it time although I have to mention that I cut down my own Sir-Prize tree after five years because it still hadn't produced. Check out this page for where to buy GEM avocado trees: gregalder.com/yardposts/where-to-buy-an-avocado-tree/

That avocado looks like a Fuerte mutation.

Kinda looks like a Pinkerton.
@gregalderdotcom4 жыл бұрын
I agree. It does have similarities to Pinkerton, particularly the neck. Where Pinkerton is superior is in its small, round seed. On the other hand, Gillogly has a stronger flavor. I imagine some people might appreciate that but some might prefer the milder Pinkerton flavor.

I have this damn tree. It’s a complete waste of space. The fruit never ripens. It stays on the tree. I’ve tried picking it and letting it ripen but it is just hard, rubbery and tasteless. I live in Santa Clara County, California. It’s November and the fruit is still just hanging there as green as can be and rock hard.
@gregalderdotcom Жыл бұрын
I'm not a big fan of the variety myself, but are you sure you're letting the fruit hang long enough? If you can, try to wait until the spring to eat some (one year after flowering) and maybe they'll improve in taste.
