Great video! You covered everything I look for in a tree. The only thing I would have added is to be patient. If you don't see the quality you're looking for dont feel pressured to buy it. You can potentially find the perfect tree for you at any nursery, even big box stores, so just keep looking! The extra drive and time could save you monety, time and even years of frustration.

I read an article years ago that a small tree in general will catch up with a large tree following transplant. In other words, that $500 tree (assuming it lives) will do no better in the long run! But you do get that one fruit.

Hi Greg, That nursery has a lot of avocados for this time of year. I also noticed that many of the trees had some amount of persea mites. Great tips on choosing a tree. I've rarely seen trees already white washed a nursery. It's great to have options when choosing a certain variety but some times they only have one tree of the variety you want and then you are forced to decide if you want that variety enough to deal with the issues that come with that tree. Thanks for the tips. Can you recommend places in San Diego or SoCal in general to buy specialty root stock on their trees? I'm finding mostly Zutano root stock but I would like something more resistant to salinity and root rot. While I can control root rot to a certain extent with amended soil (we have heavy clay here), salinity is an issue with our water supply unless I invest in some filters for my house. I've lost 4/5 of my avocados either to root rot or salt burn and just have a Pinkerton left, which gets severe leaf burn whenever I water it.

Thanks Greg. Could you make a video on proper way to plant an young tree from the pot to the ground? Some people recommend washing all the soil from nursery. Some people recommend just placing the entire root ball into the hole. Some recommend using root hormones. So many different opinions. But no consensus. An opinion of an expert like you would definitely help. Thank you and happy new year!

Thank you! I wished I had seeing this video before purchasing my tree 2 months ago. The branch at the top of my tree burned down much like you showed in the video, is there any way for it to recover? I was thinking of cutting it down since now its just black.

You might as well leave it and see where the new top growth begins in late winter. Then you can cut off any dead stuff above that new growth.

@@gregalderdotcom Just read it. So very helpful. Thank you. Early last July I planted two 24" avocado trees - one Reed, and the other Zutano, for which I'm sure I overpaid. In any event, the heat wave burnt the Reed beyond salvaging, but the Zutano survived and seems to be doing well now. The intention was for them to be side by side. So my question is, should I try for another very large (24") Reed, if I can find one? Or downsize to a 15" or even 5"?

I have major gopher infestation that I will never be able to get rid of, (I live next to Open Space), so am thinking of growing permanently in pots. I have 40gal on pots that I can pot them into. What are your recommendations about in-pot culture?

Hi Gigi, Growing avocados in pots is possible. I would prefer to have them in the ground, but in pots is possible. I plan on writing a post about that soon. I also fight gophers. If I had to pick and choose which varieties to grow in pots, which would you suggest? I have a GEM already and several babies that I have requested from Epicenter Avocados that they are grafting for me. I will pick them up in the Spring.

GEM and Gwen come to mind because they are fruitful and compact and upright. But I've seen other varieties fruiting and growing well in pots too, such as Hass and Reed. A couple of others that I wouldn't hesitate to try are Lamb and Edranol, and maybe Pinkerton.

@@gigihenderson8567 Just wanted to add an idea that is potentially useful to you. I had a minor gopher problem in my front yard that I solved. I also had a minor problem in my backyard which I solved with this method. The method I used was to attach a large hose, in my case a pool cleaning hose, to my tailpipe. I then ran the hose into the gopherhole and buried the hose as to seal it. I then started my car and let the exhaust run into the Gopher hole for about 30 to 40 minutes. I did this in my front yard and it worked wonderfully. I did this 2 years later in my backyard and also worked wonderfully. I had new gopher mounds almost everyday and after I use this method the mounds stopped instantly. One thing to consider is you cannot attach the plastic hose to your tailpipe without it melting. You will need to have some type of longer extension between the plastic and the tailpipe such as some other type of metal pipe or tube
