Interesting fact Roberta Flacks "Killing Me Softly" is actually describing Don Mclean playin "Empty Chairs". Don Mclean is the man strumming her pain with his fingers and singing her life with his words. Another interesting fact is that "Vincent" was one of Tupac Shakur's favorite songs and his then girlfriend played the song on a continuous loop at his bed side after his fatal shooting to insure that it would be the last thing he ever heard.
@ssppeellll7 жыл бұрын
I had heard something quite different about "Killing Me Softly" when it was a fairly new song--but I never bought what I heard then. It didn't make sense. Reading this got me interested though. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: "According to Lori Lieberman, who performed the original recording in 1971, the song was born of a poem she wrote after experiencing a strong reaction to the Don McLean song 'Empty Chairs.' She then related this information to Gimbel, who took her feelings and put them into words. Then Gimbel passed the words to Fox, who set them to music." That's a simplified version of the story, but fills in a little more detail anyway. Thanks for piquing my interest, Tony.
@amirpourghoureiyan16377 жыл бұрын
ssppeellll Lori Lieberman was 19 and had been persuaded to go and see McLean live, she’d just gone through a break-up and felt quite captivated by Empty Chairs’ lyrics, being in a vulnerable state at that time and wrote a poem about what she felt about experiencing McLean’s performance and then released it as a single, Roberta Flack heard it on a plane ride and wanted to cover it. The rest is history.

Flack got the song from another writer who had see McLean.

American Pie album also gave us "Empty Chairs" (a BEAUTIFUL SONG (makes me cry)), "Everybody Loves Me, Baby (What's the Matter With You?)", "Sister Fatima", "Babylon" and more. It's a beautiful album and I listened to it often. I love the lyric from the song, "Sister Fatima" and I use it all the time: "For $5.00 the flower is free". Another lyric I use is, "Everybody loves me, baby. What's the matter with you?" One of my favorite songs of Don McClean, although not on this particular album, is, "And I Love You So". When my youngest sister had her firstborn out of wedlock, our mom watched him for her a lot while she (my sister) went to work and mom would sing this song to this little boy. I tear up when I think about how much she did indeed love that little babt and how he loved her. "And I love you so. The people ask me how. Kow I've lived till now. I tell them, "I don't know"... Excuse me. I have to cry now. 😥

One of my best nights in college was when my class of 20 students went on a field trip to visit students in our same major at other Universities. We wound up in a bar at the U of Illinois, and American Pie came over the sound system. We were joined on the floor with everyone else in the bar, and it was like an arms around shoulders sing along then fast dancing when it kicked in! It was so fun and a great experience. At the time we thought it was impromptu, but it turns out it was an old tradition and the bar played the song at closing time every night. Wish I could remember the name of the bar. Good times!!!

Don Maclean is what we call an Artist, not the common use of the word but the true one, a true artist is self-motivated, thus genuine in what he delivers and therefore selective in the audience he reaches, in other words he appeals to a nearly elite-like gategory of people, this is why he is underappreciated, but it really doesn't matter, and it's even better this way, because he is not what the majority likes, he is special and this is the price of his brilliance.

I saw McLean in concert once, many years ago. (He may have been the warm-up act for someone else--I don't remember.) It was just him and his guitar and the microphone for nearly an hour. Maybe a bit of banjo and harmonica too. No one else on stage. One voice, one instrument--special effects devices, theatrics, or other gimmicks. And I never got the feeling people were tired of listening to him. I certainly wasn't. How many musicians in bands could keep the audience's attention and interest for an hour without other musicians or singers to back them up?

My mother used to play his records when I was growing up and his music always appealed to me because it was haunting and melancholic but also left you feeling uplifted and carried, rather than depressed. I knew very well who and what Don McLean was way back in the early 70's when I was a huge fan. I was also learning to play guitar at that time and bought the sheet music to every Don McLean song I could lay my hands on. I was able to emulate many if not all of his songs which didn't require complicated finger style guitar playing and I performed many of them on stage a few years after when my own singing/playing career began. I think it would have been in the 80's I saw him perform live in concert in Mackay, Northern Queensland. Australia and even to this day, I drop whatever I'm doing when one of his classics like American Pie, Vincent, Empty Chairs or Mountains O' Mourne is playing near me. His playing style, his voice and ability to be able to write the kind of lyrics he wrote, and deliver them with such deep feeling and emotion, made him not only a wonderful singer/songwriter, but also a great poet. Truly gifted people like Don McLean who could woo an audience into complete silence with only his voice and guitar are a rarity these days when most artist rely on electronic computer generated backing in order to be able to do the same.

I grew up listening to the Seekers, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, Melanie Skafa, Bob Dylan Harry Belafonte and Don McLean. I have been going to folk music festivals since I was very young, the live music there was mostly from the Britain, especially Ireland. For me, it’s very heartwarming to see someone mention Don McLean. I’m more than a casual fan. I know his deep cuts… Crossrods, Falling Through Time, Winter Has Me Lost In It’s Grip, Love Hurts… I’m saddened that only people would really know him as the “American Pie” guy…. He’s been around for 50 years, and only people care about that song and Vincent, And I Love You So and maybe nothing else…. I’m someone who got into his album American Pie two-ish years ago. I really enjoyed all the stuff on it… I then checked out the self titled 1972 album afterwards, still enjoyed it… I’m glad he’s recognised, but I just think having him as a “one-hit wonder” just doesn’t make sense at all…

It's 2022... I'm a gitarist (not the one who dears to bring misplaced covers). Since 1976 I discovered the music of Don McLean... learning to play the guitar. I have severaly people I admire, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Pete Seeger etc... but Don is very high rated in my list... Whitout any doubt I say, as a gitarist, that Don is THE BEST PERFORMER AND SINGER-SONGWRITER I ever known !!! Especially the latest year I'm gettin' much more involved in his guitar playing (also thnx to Jerry's guitar bar) and music. Dropped D-tuning.. !! Three flights up... Till tomorrow...Circus song... it's awesome ! Also the technicity of his guitar playing you may not underestimate. Then the other aspect... poetry... hard truth and hilarious songs... you'll never find his equal... "Vincent" is a beautiful song... "Three fligts up" is one of my favorites "should walls and doors and plaster ceilings... separate us of each other's feelings..." THATS POETRY & HARD TRUTH !!! "On the amazon" (Clifford Grey-Greatrex Newman-Vivian Ellis) is HILARIOUS ! "Empty chairs"... the song he played at The Troubadour... was the base of "killing me softly", written by Lori Lieberman. Also "Tapestry" was the song that represented to the starting of GREENPEACE... and MANY OTHERS SONGS.... I saw Don's performance twice... first in "Arenberg" in Antwerp, Belgium, then in Turnhout, also Belgium (that's where I'm from). It annoyed me very much that people only were waiting for "Vincent". Rather dan Bob Dylan I would give the price to Don McLean for poetry and guitar playin'. To the other guys who trie to break down Don's music: GET A LIFE ! THE ONLY THING YOU BRING US IS A HEARTACHE, HEARING PROBLEMS AND TURNING OFF THE RADIO... I was born in 1960, I'm proud of what our generation meant for making REAL MUSIC.

Hell, you even missed one of his best songs: No Reason For Your Dreams. Truly underappreciated

I hate it when this guy is described as a one hit wonder. People are quick to label others without taking the facts into account. Thanks for this great video and kudos Don McLean.
