I live 20 miles from the town where Vincent was born. He was a great man. No wonder there are songs dedicated to him. Yet none of them are as beautifull as this one!

At 61, this asthmatic, allergy-ridden singer just raised goosebumps on my arms and nearly brought me to tears. This is a perfect example of what's missing in current music. All us "old folks" say this repeatedly, but not one singer on pop radio today can shine this man's shoes, much less hope to EVER sing with such pure emotion or have this effect on listeners. Wow!!! God bless you Don... thanks for many years of heartfelt music and lyrics.

This performance, done this way, is absolutely awesome. It makes me want to kiss his cheek and say, " Thank You" , but with so much adoration from fans I doubt it would mean anything. I have listened to other versions, but this one shows heart and soul in comparison. I listen to it over & over like a young school girl. If it were an old 45 it would be scratched up by now from over use. Hugs from a Midwest lady who loves to hear it.

Everytime I listen to this song I can't do much than crying. The line where it is said "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" reflects exactly what I feel about this world today. No one makes efforts to understand other people's true soul and we all are alone and loveless, I mean true love, that love for the human being that doesn't ask for something back but which is totally free. Great Don you understand the matter !!!

this first time i really listened to this song, i was in the middle of an isle in Kroger, just down the street from where i once lived in another state. while slowly wandering down an isle in search of something simple and absurd, those words came through the stores ambient sounds meant to add a lovely background texture. i began to cry and then to weap. and as my mind and heart rejoiced in the sadness that was so tenderly related, my body died around me.

Don McLean captured the true tragedy of Vincent, a man with a deep need for love and belonging, expressing himself through colour on canvas. A difficult man because of his illness, his inner soul was kind and caring. This may be one of the greatest songs ever written.

This song is so beautiful. However, what is even more beautiful is the exhibit of Van Gogh's painting, "Starry Night," that is currently on display, until January 2011, at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. If you are in the area, and you enjoy this song, please get tickets to see this magnificient painting, as well as other. I was so moved by it, it was incredible. Before I left the museum I went back to see the painting a number of times.

oh, people, just stop complaining. If he would have played only with his guitar, then surely, there would be somebody saying that he could do more, since it's a different time now... Just appreciate the beautiful, and absolutely divine lyrics and the outstanding music that this man can make! He is a genius and I don't think there are as many similarly extraordinary artists in this world as there are fingers on both hands... Don McLean, YOU ARE THE BEST! :)

and an expression of appreciation for the works that this man produced. Many of the lines refer to Van Gogh’s paintings (i.e. “Shadows on the hills/ Sketch the trees and the daffodils), while others hint at the struggle the man went through, such as “For they could not love you/ But still your love was true … And how you suffered for your sanity/ And how you tried to set them free”. Unfortunately KZbin doesn't lend itself to in-depth analysis, so please reply if you'd like to discuss more!

I was 15 year old girl when this song came out, was played on the radio a lot. It was my favorite song then, of course I didn't literally connect with the tortured artist thing back then; I was more interested in the torture of fights with my first love, and how the world would come to a screeching halt everytime we had a fight. This song helped me cry somehow. LOL. I'm a bit older now, and the true meaning is different, though not necessarily deeper.

I cry everytime when I hear this song. And I think how many people are amnonimous now, alone, depressing...Like Van Gogh. We don't see them, we don't know anything about them... until them die and that new comes in some newspaper! Nobody have to be genious to be important. We have to care about each other, about our neighbour, our family. We need each other. Nobody can be happy when is lonely.

The song evokes the images of Van Gogh's work so vividly & full of color, I find myself humming it often. "Now I understand what u tried to say 2 me." I don't think spnjoseph hasn't heard of Vincent Van Gogh. Maybe s[he] didn't know Don McLean was referring to THE Vincent Van Gogh & not his brother Vincent or significant other. And know u know, which is a good thing.

A real masterpiece on both the musical and lyrical sides. Very beautifully performed here. In terms of contemporary/popular songwriting, I think it is unsurpassed. I only wish he had changed one word--"...as lovers SOMETIMES do..." I don't like the idea of equating, or even associating, suicide with love. It is tragic when it actually happens, as in the song. But thankfully, it isn't a norm.

Yes Frances...there are people who make the effort to understand to understand the souls of others. But for the ones who don't it's usually all about the distraction presented by the material-money world. Those who learn to look past that see the Spirit of God in the other person's eyes and that creates a bond of feeling that connects them at a very deep level. They see that in other people, in animals and in themselves.
