This song is very special to my son and I. When my son was a baby he had horrible colic every night at dinner time. One night as he was screaming away "Vincent" came on the radio and he instantly stopped crying and he listened with a very serene look on his face. So the next day I went out and bought the cassette and every night when the screaming started I would play the song and he would calmed down and listen. I then just had it on repeat so the screaming didn't start at all. When he was in high school he painted me a beautiful painting of Starry Night and had learned to play "Vincent" on the guitar and that was my present for my birthday that year. To this day it is still the present I cherish most. And it always makes me tear up.

This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there are some pain I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people,

The melody of this song makes its own rules. It's not bound by a straight time signature and tempo. It's deep, flowing, soft, and haunting. He sings it effortlessly. No one writes like this. This is truly a masterpiece. A musical story as opposed to my modern definition of a 'song'. Brilliant Mr. McLean. Just brilliant.

Years ago, before arthritis stopped me playing, I learned to play this song. I quickly discovered that there is no way to "keep time" with it. It's just a matter of feeling. And when one tries to set it to a strict time signature or tempo (to "quantize" the music), it loses its beauty.

There will never be another Van Gogh.

One of the most astonishing things about this performance is how the conductor is trying to anticipate Don's tempo, which is in constant flux, not a single bar is equal in measure, everything ebbs and flows but the conductor manages to keep abreast of these changes and enables the strings and other instruments to blend in seamlessly without interrupting the magical flow that Don is dictating and what makes this a truly astounding rendition of the song.
