DON MUANG Thailand's No.1 Airport | History | Hijacks | Flooding | Drug Busts | Expansion | Suicide

Far better than the bland & boring Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Muang has a 110 year history of not only aviation but famous stories about hijackings, drug busts, plane crashes, floodings and suicide. The airport is Asia's oldest and home of the Royal Thai Air Force. Don Muang also has an interesting local neighbourhood and canal communities, plus great spots for planespotting, and of course useful transport connections. And by the way, the new spelling is just ridiculous.

@@BangkokPat - Every time I went "Up, Up and Away" from DMK in my metallic, beautiful balloon, floating among the stars together with other passengers, I was elated. After 10 months (summer departure), or 4 months (Christmas), I knew I would be in a nicer place, see a nicer face, and we would sing a song while sailing along, following my trip through that silver sky. But although I was only suspended under a twilight canopy for a few weeks, or a month at best, I knew I would soon return to search the clouds for a star to guide me, and by some chance you would find me, under a cloud to hide us, yet we knew we'd find us, keeping the moon beside us, ice-cold taxi to guide us, back to Sukhumvit once again. Yea, I took some liberties.

When we first started traveling to Thailand 25 years ago, Don Muang was pretty run down. Thai Air lounge was pretty worn out, as well. The last time we went through DM on an international flight was in February of 2006, Oasis (Liam, Noel, etc.) happened to be in the lounge at the same time, which was surreal. They had just finished performing in Bangkok. Not a single guest in the lounge approached them, which kind of surprised us. We have been routed via Suvarnabhumi ever since, apart from when we fly to Ranong. Thanks for the upload.

Thank you so much khun Pat ! Don Muang was our main gateway to study, pai teo, and work for decades. My first trips as kid with the family in the 70s, the relatives came with garlands, since 'pai muang nok' was a big deal; the old old terminal still stands empty today. During the 90s, it was for study and work. Was very fond of the observation deck (the THAI resto was pretty good too), and the air side was pretty cozy, even today. The gates were full of jumbos and long haul, not the short haul planes you see today. To this day, I'm probably one of the few who prefer Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi (no decent observation area). And yes, the new spelling just doesn't make sense.

Another great vdo for anyone who loves BKK and Thailand. Don Muang was where I flew in to Thailand in November 2004 and it changed my life for ever. I came the following year to live in Thailand for a while in Rangsit and used to sit on my sister inlaws roof terrace watching the planes on approach. One funny memory is when I lived in Rangsit I had some belongings sent out and my brother inlaw took me to the airport to collect. He managed to drive to the cargo holds near the runway where someone went and found my parcels, a small tip and we were on our way having evaded any import red tape 😁

Pat, in late June 1983, I was a 17 YO and was moving to Bangkok when my dad was stationed there. I will never forget stepping off of the Swiss Air flight at around 11:30 pm. We had a set of stairs to climb down to get on a bus to go to immigration. The heat, humidity and that wonderful smell that lingered in the air over the city is unforgettable. As you mentioned, that empty feeling that you get when you are on the runway taking off to go home is something that I have felt every time I left. I was homesick at 500 feet after take off. I look forward to coming back to Thailand to spend a few months within the next year. This will be the first time flying in and not going to Don Muang. Thank you ever so much for what you do to keep us connected to Bangkok and especially the history lessons that show what a great place Bangkok is and how it is changing.

I was stationed in Bangkok in 1975 in the U.S. Air Force. The Air Traffic Control radar for Don Mueang airport was an USAF AN/MPN-13 GCA approach radar system for many years. We maintained the radar and it was used by Thai Air Traffic Controllers. It was between the runways and near the golf course. Many golf ball dents! Near the end of 1975 the airport finally purchased an Italian radar system and we packed up USAF's radar and shipped it out.

Great vid Pat! I lived just off of Soi Songphrapa for 5 years while working for a local Airline. My walk to work (all hours of day and night) would take me just 12 minutes from my Apt. door to the airlines dispatch door. Meanwhile my colleagues would have to leave the city up to two hours fighting traffic. My memories of living with the locals and the respect I got from them while walking to and from work in my uniform was a joy. I never felt threatened or fear walking from my door then across the canal behind the Amari hotel and through the freeway walkway into the terminal. I was the only farang living in the area and thoroughly enjoyed it. The nooks and crannies of DMK airport bring back many memories. Cheers!

Fascinating airport and aviation history Pat. Great archive footage and so much research. Loved some of the funny subtitles. My first arrival in Bangkok, Don Muang was 1996 as a backpacker. Caught the train to Hua Lumphong Station for 5 Baht. I still enjoy travelling through DMK as it brings back so many memories. BKK is fine too but DMK so much nostalgia and emotion for me. The long tunnel was always to the old domestic terminal (terminal 3) and I walked that a good few times in the early 2000's. The walkway to the the Amari hotel leads to stairs down to Viphavadi Rangsit road which was often a better option to get a taxi when the airport taxi queue was lengthy.

Like another viewer, my 1st arrival in Thailand was Don Muang in 1973 during the student riots. I was initially captivated by the unique to be smell of vegetation, and the khlong that ran alongside the highway to Bangkok, which had fishermen actually casting nets into the water. It was a very great first impression. Arrived back to live some years in the early 80's and there'd been lots of changes, not improvements IMO. Hope there comes to be a way of preserving your videos for posterity. There's a lot in them documenting the history of Bangkok (and other) that exist nowhere else. Just wonderful! Well done, Pat. Flew through Don Muang many a time since the late 50's and particularly in the 60's and 70's. You took me down memory lane. Great research, photo/video clip finds and narration. You're continuing to "create" much appreciated consolidated references for years to come. Foremost, am glad that the KZbin platform offers translated subtitles (particularly Thai for local sharing). Sending a "couple" of coffees your way. Thank you.

I love Don Mueang because it is the LCC hub and connects most of the nearby South East Asian countries and even India,China and Taiwan at cost effective prices. Suvarmabhumi is for large full service airlines

Best flying song: Steve Miller Band - Jet Airliner. Don Muang: I must be getting old, I can only remember the Thai Royal Orchid Lounge, and I easily flew 40+ r/t from 1980 until the new airport opened. I vaguely remember a very cramped/crowded luggage collection area in the very early 80s, followed by gridlocked traffic into the city. Always look forward to your in-depth knowledge and historical photos.

Your uploads humble me. I thought I knew stuff but I was surprised how early the Thais started stuff. Thanks for the upload, great as always..

Great video Pat, as a young man I always remember having a pint in " Biil Bentley" when I was going back to the UK. Always felt like a condemned man going to the gallows

I was just there to catch my flight to KL, where I am now eating durian. Don Muang is a good airport and has been nicely updated.

Great video! Plane fans such as myself will appreciate the content for years to come. Remember the US Blue Angels display there a few years ago. Very popular event. Arrived and departed from DM from/to the Middle East. Missed one flight because of the traffic from Korat once though!

A fantastic video with amazing research. I love the old footage in your videos. Who would have thought an airport would have such a colourful history. It's time now that Thai officials grant you a position within the tourist board. In my own humble opinion, your videos do so much for the country.

Absolutely love your channel Pat. I think you are probably the most informative Thailand blogger out there. Always well researched and well prepared. I'm surprised that you haven't landed a job with a leading Thai TV company. I particularly enjoyed this video as for the last 14 years of travelling to Thailand, Don Mueang is where I stay with my wife and mother in law. Just 200 metres up Song Phrapa ( the road of death I call it!)love the place. Keep up the good work mate. And thanks for your work.

Cool video. First memory of Thailand was the golf course in between the runways and how crazy that seemed. Little did I know what amazing things Thailand was going to surprise me with over the next 20 years.

Your videos always amaze me..quality info non stop..I spent 13 hrs in Don Mueng airport in December 1975 I left a ship at the breakers in Kaoishiung and the flight home to UK from Taipei was Hongkong Bangkok Karachi Frankfurt Amsterdam London..I seem to remember that I had a small can of Guiness which was in a green tin..it was cheaper than a coffee it was all i could afford (18 yr old)..If I remember rightly where I sat awaiting my connection was a sort of circular hub with about 3 or 4 747s nosed into..I maybe wrong on this and it may have been Hongkong so I apologise if that is the case. Little did I know at 18 yrs of age I would get married some 500yds away at Don Mueng amphur register office in April 2020 some 45yrs later! Best wishes from Sisaket
