Everybody is Earl Scruggs this and that, I’m a Ralph Stanley fan myself, but there is no denying that Don Reno was probably the best Banjo player. He was so far ahead of his time and still no one today Can do it like he did it.

Don Reno was a great guitar player who played guitar and fiddle tunes licked on the banjo. He took guitar and fiddle tunes to the next level and played them on the banjo.

Don was also one of the greatest humans of all time. I was 11 years old and asked Don if I could ask him a few questions. He was fantastic and I had a great time. He loved kids I think....Jack Baker NJ

Don Reno is the best, and everyone was exceptional here, as expected. But didn't ole Mack Magaha steal the show? Love that guy!

you probably know mack was one of the cutups for a long time. don was with red smiley and they came up to north jersey around 1960 or 61 and mack was right with them, putting on the great show. he must have felt like at home again. we were in high school, could not buy drinks, but they let us stay and go backstage, too. great memory.

So many banjo players look like they’d rather be anywhere else while performing. Don Reno actually looks like he’s having a great time on stage.

Don had his own style. Lots of fancy two finger and single string runs plus a three finger roll that was a good as anybody. Ralph Stanley, Earl, Sonny Osborn and J. D. Crow are mostly 3 finger roll. Reno style!! Don played in my hometown on TV for years. About once a week as a teen I would go down to the station. Don was always friendly and my favorite. When Ralph Stanley or Flatt & Scruggs were in town, they always had nice things to say about Don. He was a great musician. Don went into the hospital with circulation problems and after several months passed away in 1984. We were all hoping he could get well.

That's also my favorite part when mack comes out there as well! Nice to have all this on youtube Jason, just putting my 2 cents worth in as well... They are sure having a fun time out there, it makes me smile and feel happy every time I watch this! Don Wayne and Dale are a lot like that as I remember...always joking around and laughing... I don't know any of you folks but Porter's one of my heroes! (So is Don Reno and Mack... Red, etc...)

+Matt Goode These guys are very famous! Bill Harrell and Don Reno are both legends in bluegrass music.

But, it is true that legends in the bluegrass world are sometimes still obscure to mainstream America and even among popular country music fans.
@michaelscheller68848 жыл бұрын
But what Bobby says it absolutely true Don Reno is legendary on that banjo. He was the innovator of the single string or chromatic style of banjo playing. So much so that it is generally referred to as "Reno Style" picking. Bill Harrell was a great singer. The young man on mandolin is Ronnie Reno who continues in the business with his band Reno Tradition as well as a TV show Reno's Old Time Music Hour which shows on RFD-TV and with reruns on Blue Highway TV. George Shuffler, who plays bass here, is a legendary and innovative guitar flatpicker. His development of cross picking style of playing while with the Stanley Brother has inspired and confounded generations of guitar players. In 2010 three children of the above frontmen, Don Wayne Reno, Dale Reno, and Mitch Harrell formed Reno & Harrell and have fabulously carried on the flame.

Jason Skinner can you tell me what model gibson banjo don reno is playing? My brother has a 1927 gibson that he bought that looks identical. Been trying to figure out the serial number no such luck. I know the neck was replaced with a don reno style neck the head is 1927 would appreciate if you could tell us the exact model number sound really good the resonator and head look great the neck has some blemishes. Asked several people they dont know lol hoping you can tell me. My brother is a professional banjo player in a local band in bedford pa really gpod plays don reno style as well. Praying he can go big and cuf a record with a big time bluegrass band. Hes worked to hard to let his career go by the way. He plays for our church gets paid for it cause we dont have a piano player. My brother has an amazing talent never read music. Since he was 5 self taught wanting him to be famous.. jason skinner, your wife, son, and daughter are awesome could listen too you everyday
@renoman6 жыл бұрын
Don's banjo was a 1938 RB-75 Gibson. Serial number 518-1. I would have to see your brothers banjo to determine what he actually has.

Another great post by Jason! Thanks, man. I've watched this PW show many times. I mean, man, what a Cut-Up line-up! Don is all over that 75 - playin' it like a gtr. Just tremendous as always. Bill Harrell with that great loose right wrist! - check his rhythm out. Ronnie and George also tremendous. Love that walkin' bass. And then Mac, a former original Cut-Up, out on fiddle for Charlotte Brkdwn! Funny when Buck takes Don's banjo from him! And Porter "Alright Hoss" Wagoner - the best. You notice he calls these boys a great "country" band...back when "country" and "bluegrass" were the same thing - just different styles. Anyway, 3 great numbers here!
