Lol he had an annunciation, tonality, and rhythm. He had certain words that he threw in because they just sounded funny when he brought them in. What he was doing at times was meaningless "...underneath he's wearing jeans and a dead cowboy suit!" There's something about saying dead that makes it great. Its an adjective for him that makes anything sound horrible in terms of roasting lol.

I remember watching a biography show about Johnny Carson, and one of his staff said that they put together a "run sheet" for Carson for each episode. The outfit was part of a thing that had been building for weeks. Carson was in the habit of using a falsetto voice and sang “Like a Rhinestone Cowboy” when one of his jokes bombed. Somehow they came up with the idea to have him sing the entire song in that voice. In this episode, rather than his usual opening monologue, Carson sang “Rhinestone Cowboy” with Doc and the orchestra backing him up.

That's remarkable. Johnny Carson going toe to toe with Don Rickles, and poor Robert Blake just sitting there dying. I wish I could see the rest of that show, Bob Hope and Desi Arnez. They would have been darned interesting too. Johnny was the GOAT, but he was helped by having far more interesting guests than they get nowadays. Guests who actually had something to talk about besides plugging their latest movie or TV show. I do remember however, not too long after Jimmy Fallon took over the show, he had Rickles on. Fallon, I think, is rather silly most of the time, but it was interesting to see the deep respect with which he treated Rickles. He was almost in awe of the man. Rickles was just as good as he was here. That was only a few weeks before he died but if he was in poor health, I couldn't tell.

That was kinda funny. Not just the jokes, but Robert Blake was completely disarmed in front of Rickles. He didn't know what to do or say for a while. And you could tell that he was trying to relax and show appreciation of the jokes so he sort of reached out and grabbed Rickles Shoulder. Rickles grabbed a hold of that and started running with it, mercilessly lampooning Blakes behavior who you could tell was feeling a little akward but wanted to be seen as relaxed and cool. But Rickles just has an instinct for improvising jokes at everybody elses expense and he was just relentless to the point that Blake was laughing at Rickles sort of lightheartedly making fun of his gestures. Wow you have to have a tough skin to be involved in that conversation between Rickles and Carson. They go at each other like two Tomcats, and anybody that gets in the way is gonna catch a claw. But it was fun to watch, and it was great to see Blake. I remembered the face, but I couldn't remember the name until I heard it, and then when they started talking about the Cocatoo I was sure of who it was. Barretta was one of my favorite shows, tho I didn't get to see as many of them as I wanted. Back in those days if you missed it you missed it. There was no on demand. Databyter

I am very surprised to see Johnny dressed that way and the way Don made everyone including Robert laugh was just so typical and I also loved how Johnny and Don stuck it to each other like they always did.

@@RayNDeere I think Johnny made a slight reference to that and I loved Don's reaction too. I didn't know Johnny was a singer too. I never hear him sing before. But as you said maybe he did the whole thing to settle a bet.

Everything that happened after Johnny's 2.5 minutes line was absolutely incredible. I wasn't even alive for any of this and I love it. Two masters way ahead of the time who have made me fall over laughing for years.

Don Rickles was the funniest man in American History....there, I said it. The wife and I use Rickles/Carson reruns as a night-light....then rewind the funny bits and laugh twice at the same lines: "I feel like George C. SCOTT with a Dolphin!!"

I swear I miss those wonderful days when entertainers from all genres of the arts seemed to genuinely love their craft and perfected it to the point where it would just roll off of them with an ease that made it seem effortless with dignity and charisma that unfolded is lost back in time. Most entertainers nowadays are mostly in for the status symbol and the power that can win it. Anyway I really miss you great time in life and history that it was, because it's true what they say. You never know what you've got until its gone.

This sketch/bit is side splitting hilarious every 10 seconds. I watched Carson as a kid but don't think I laughed as much as my grandfather did back then. Making up for lost time now. Just thinking: I can't name one single 2022 late night talk show hosts and/or guests that are this funny. Oh do we miss "the Johnny Carson" Show.

It's amazing how the guest sitting next to Rickles does not seem to know what to make of him. He looks at times like he just wants to break out in hysterics, but isn't sure. And Rickles roasting Carson on his own show? Comedy classic.
