Here's how to tell if the problem is really a calcium or magnesium deficiency. And what you need to know about how calcium and magnesium work together at your root zone. If you don't know about this, you're wasting money and likely hurting your plants.

Running coco drip with RO water, I used to measure my cal mag but lately have just been adding a random glug from the bottle when I mix nutes in my 20 gallon bucket. Never had a hint of a cal mag problem, but maybe that's because my nutes (CNS 17) also have cal mag. My point, don't worry about it too much, but make sure there is at least some cal mag available at all times and you're good to go. BTW, I also stopped using PH up with amazing results, I just start at 6.2 and let the PH fall until I mix up the next batch of nutes, sometimes it falls to ~5.0 which the data says is way too acidic, but it works and the plants love it.

So far every seed I planted has germinated and prospered. The hardest thing about growing so far was replacing the laundry tub faucet to handle a reverse osmosis and add an electrical sub panel and a couple 20 amp circuits. I'm growing in coco & in my most recent nutrient batch I actually omitted calmag. I usually mix up about 5 gallons at a time and am late in flower. I was reading the bottle (probably should have started with that in the beginning haha) and it says only add it for the first few weeks of the plants life. I use gh flora series trio and the flora micro & flora bro actually already has both calcium & magnesium in it already. One of them in the exact same amount as the calmag (can't remember which) so it seems like overkill to me. I also cut out the floragro as there is also nitrogen in the micro. I've been wondering why my last few plants had never went through the senescence process. I'm hitting week 8 in 3 days and planned on taking it to week 10 so we shall see what happens.

Thanks... great job. I have been growing for a while now, both hydro and soil. I still battle with Cal/Mag issues. Mag more than Cal. Along with nitrogen these elements also seem to vary significantly between different cultivars. I enjoy variety, rarely run same twice. I guess not being able to get super dialed in is the price I have to pay. Part of the fun and still pulling some fairly dope bud. Thanks for the info. 👴
@deltaromeo5542

Calcium is used in conjunction with Nitrogen in Veg. After Veg Calcium isn’t used nearly as much by the plant. Magnesium is essentially a site multiplier for whatever stage of growth the plant is in, in veg it helps more leaves grow, in early flower it produces more bud nodes, as flowering continues helps produce more calyxes and more hairs per calyx and more resin glands as well. Magnesium to me is just as essential as NPK and actually more essential than N through the whole grow because Nitrogen is only required for the first half. Problem is that Companies always attach calcium to magnesium for some reason and what happens as flowering proceeds the plant needs more Magnesium but isn’t using the Calcium and the calcium builds up and becomes hard to break down and starts causing lockouts the more you use Cal-Mag to fix Mag deficiency in later flowering. You want a product that has calcium attached to nitrogen so when your done vegging your not adding not necessary nutrients. Similarly look for Magnesium attached to Phosphorus or Potassium for flowering to reduce calcium build up.
@timpage5021
@timpage5021 Жыл бұрын
Calcium is essential all the through the grow and even more so in flower . Ever seen a tomato or pepper deficient in calcium during frutiing ? It becomes undeveloped undersized and blossom end rot. If the plant didn’t use a ton of calcium in flower that’s a site fire way to get bud rot
@deltaromeo5542
@deltaromeo5542 Жыл бұрын
@@timpage5021 it absolutely isn’t. It’s way more heavy in Veg because it’s attached to the nitrogen use. Once you stop using nitrogen you don’t need nearly as much calcium. Some people use N through the whole grow, some people stop after the plant is done stretching and new leaf growth stops. Nitrogen isn’t necessary in late flower at all in my style of growing so that means I also need to drastically reduce calcium use or else it will build up. It’s an absolute fact the style I grow. If you grow like I do the cal-mag combo becomes a problem because I stop nitrogen use which lowers calcium intake requirements. Calcium is essential for the plant to process nitrogen, those 2 go hand in hand. If your using as much calcium in flower as you do in veg then your building up calcium because the plants uses it in like a 3/1 or 4/1 ratio with nitrogen if remember correctly.
@timpage5021
@timpage5021 Жыл бұрын
@@deltaromeo5542 cut calcium out in flower and see what happens. You lack basic knowledge of nutrient requirements for fruiting plants. Cannabis , tomatoes , peppers and eggplant for example all require the same levels of nutrients for optimal plant health especially when fruiting . There’s a reason why all the top growers and big commercial facilities use line ups like Jacks , Masterblend , Athena , Front Row , because they all use calcium nitrate for their calcium and nitrogen source. Big Ag uses the same calcium based fertilizer to feed the world.

Take this from someone who has been involved in drug development for ion channel modulators: To make things a little clearer. The big problem with both is not that they are competing for the same negatively charged ions in the soil when it comes to absorption, because the neutral salt itself cannot be taken up. The problem is that most ion channels (which facilitate the uptake of these ions) are often not perfectly selective, since the selectivity filter and activation gate often allow multiple ions to pass through the same pore. The problem is that only both ions compete for the same channel. In return, the uptake is limited. It's exactly the same mechanism for many channels in all living organisms. This is the same problem you would have as a human if you took magnesium and calcium supplements at the same time.

I sure use a lot of cal mag. I just go with what my plants tell me and when the leaves twist and get spotty, I use a little and they turn around. I also use coco which eats a little calcium as times goes by. You have to account for the plant and the coco. I add prilled cal mag to Grow Dots and I have seen excellent results. Cal mag is for coco growers mostly. It is a quick fix for coco growers most of the time. Use some prilled slow release cal mag and you won't need any liquid. The plants takes what it needs.

First off your voice sounds exactly like one of my dearly departed friends so that was a nice little thing to hear. Now back on topic I’ve been using Cal med so I don’t know what’s the difference is with Cal Meg because I just bought a package off of Amazon it came with Bloom micro and cal med i’m assuming Cal med and Cal Meg are the same and I follow instructions. I’ve been feeding it weekly small amount but measured properly following label instructions. Now that you’ve described what the deficiency looks like I am not experiencing those so should I stop using it? I had a bumper harvest last year, which was my first year, using any nutrients additionally was made at largest harvest to date. My plants this year. Are coming in beautifully and don’t seem to be suffering. Any negative issues at the moment. So you have my question I guess is. Keep doing what I’m doing as it seems to be working or cut out the cal med and only use it if I see a deficiency popping up?

I add one cup of sweet dolomite food grade like in livestock feed (NO LEAD) per gallon to lucky dog off the rip indoors. Gonna have flowing point well by the fen at grow tested this spring. Think its high in calcium. Maybe even saline. The plants growing around it say so. Found nice pieces of bog wood to make pipes out of. Makes me wonder how much Ca and Mg the peat holds in it. One of the springs and one of the seeps where animals drink in the fen are favorite places to get plant water.

Plant is about 5 foot with a thick ass trunk. 1 out of 10 seeds the worst germy rates I’ve ever done. I find if you’d gonna throw anything on your plants just throw ph’d water on them with little recharge give them a break from just feed feed feed,I find my plants love just ph’d water n recharge once a week between feeds, this help dilute any feed that’s left from your last feed and let’s the plant use the fednutrition before you add more on the next feed concentrating nutes in your soil sometimes to a crazy high level check your run off weekly also and if it’s reading well high then U know to go lighter maybe water in between feedings should help keep soil ppm to a healthy level n avoid nut burn and lockout !!!
@Shakshuka69
@Shakshuka69 Жыл бұрын
Next time you think you have a deficiency (assuming you're not running salt based liquid nutrients) consider that you may just be watering too much/too little and causing lockout If you are using liquid salt based nutes like the fox farm trio, you're likely not using their flushing agent correctly and have a lot of salt building up as well as PH issues

Hey scotty I asked on a live if there was any silica in recharge or grow dots and I think grambo told me no. Would it be reasonable to try to add that to it or should I try to find a source for silica for my girls. I did read that bamboo has high levels of silica so maybe try working that into the formula. Thanks for the great content and the knowledge everyday.
@ScottyReal420

It unfortunately would not be an easy add to the recharge and when it comes to the grow dots there is only so much room in the formula so to add any thing requires things to be taken away to make room. I would suggest just finding a goo source of Silica like Silicium from Phive8 and add it to your water.
