Here in Australia, it is mostly "Don't care about your religion, we will take you as you are". ( if you are an a-hole, you will be treated as an a-hole ) BUT, we have, in the last few decades had the politicians wanting to go more like the US. ( examples:- Howard, pushed his 'religious morals' onto everyone, brought it laws to block 'Gay marriage'. Abbott, well, his science minister was George Pell, who ran away to the vatican when a royal commission into pedophile behavior in the churches got a little close. Morison, spent most of his time protecting his church { Hill song } from the troubles caused by their own actions ).

I'm in a Blue City/Red State as well. Those new red coats haven't been able to raise a mayoral candidate in decades. Our girl Marcy might now be in the top three for length of office time in Washington. Personally I'm proud of our Toledo!

What has your mayor done to make life better for the people who suffer most in our backwards, gerrymandered State? My guess is that they are doing the same garbage that the mayor in our capital city has been doing, just like the democratic mayor who preceded the current. Decade plus tax abatements for corporations to bring a few hundred jobs, building expensive 5+1s using TIF funding scams that nobody on minimum wage can afford to live in, boosting charter schools (aka "community schools") which are syphoning funds away from our already struggling public schools, increasing already bloated police budgets, reducing social services to the people that need them the most...The list goes on...

After 30 years of freedom from the Catholic business of life control I can say that the anger does mellow with time and self compassion. I was always a bit of a rebel and I am possessed of (sometimes by) a questioning mind. When authorities tell me to stop asking, "Why?" I ask them to explain how not questioning benefits me, since I can clearly see what the benefits are to them. You won't always feel the fire of righteousness but those embers will be there to remind you that in a world where control is the aphrodisiac you must remain ready to question everything and blindly accept nothing. Life is complicated and the simple answers almost always leads to bondage...and not the safe, sane and consensual form!

My family was less religious than me. I went fundamentalist at the age of 17 and tried to convert my Catholic parents who barely went to church twice a year. It did not go over well. I got thrown out of my home and have since then reconciled mostly, but also deconstructed and became an atheist. Some of my friends and family, who were never nearly as serious about religion than I was, were very uncomfortable with me not believing in a god and some of them became more religious around me. I got more flack for professing non-belief than for anything else.

I don't believe God and Satan literally exist outside of being anthropomorphic symbols of good and evil, but even as symbols, why would I want to associate with a symbol of evil? I know Satanists don't believe in any of it, either. I think their only reason to bother with it is to antagonize Christians so they can feel superior to them. If it were some other primitive and ignorant group, we wouldn't look at it so kindly if someone intentionally tried to terrorize them by pretending to worship whatever they thought was evil, and just took the attitude, "Yeah, they're ignorant, so fuck 'em! It's their own fault for not being smart like us!" Somehow, Christians aren't granted the same charity and kindness. I will grant this, though. If I were an outspoken atheist who attracted as many hateful comments from Christians as I'm sure Seth does, I'm sure I would get pretty jaded and find it hard to be sympathetic, too. That's how it seems to work in the world in general, anyway. Like in politics, most of anyone I liked ten years ago that I thought was pretty centrist and reasonable has become radicalized to one extreme or the other. It's hard to have a balanced take on anything, because then you're a target for both sides.
