That is of course if you are using hard to use, big-name automation systems, where the end user client is forced to hire a code programmer to do the simplest of real-life tasks. I am used to systems that take weeks to learn, months at worst. A VFD can be controlled by a simple PID loop. Logic statements can be programmed with easy plain English "if-then" logic statements using commands like IF, THEN, ELSE, AND, OR, FOR, etc. This is what happens when a system is designed to be complex so that the client is on the hook instead of designing it to be used as a tool. I've been doing this for over 25 years and it is not as difficult as this video makes it out to be.

As someone that works in manufacturing, and knows most of the syntax you've given examples of, would that be a keen indicator that I can apply myself to at least entry level PLC/VFD learning? I already have change basic communications on the HMI side of things and the main PLC technician at my job isn't too well versed in anything else related to computations other than the specific program our company uses. I may be in over my head, but it's just frustrating seeing that we only have one PLC tech at our location and I want to be at least capable enough while also being able to focus on other issues not PLC related.

I'm an electronics systems engineer who have designed many products, and I'm also a professional software engineer with a decade of industry experience. I'm about to design my own production facility (factory line) for my own product. I came to this video to learn why the heck people use expensive PLC:s for industrial automation when they seem to be just stupider versions of MCU:s. Looking at this video and a few others I learnt that there is no reason. PLC:s are a stupid legacy way to do things and that I should avoid them like the plague when designing my factory line. With an MCU all the hardware is nearly free, all the software is free, and the software is natively intermixable with all other computers and software systems, without having to buy an expensive software package from the PLC vendor that only works with the PLC:s of that specific vendor. Good grief! I'm never putting a PLC in any of my robots or production lines!

What is MCU? Is it reliable as a PLC for many years?
@enque01
@enque01 9 ай бұрын
@steve5nash Every PLC has an MCU inside it. It is the processor. But you need to design more details around the processor if you use an MCU. Let me explain the difference with an analogy. A PLC is like a coloring book for children. It has 40 pages of simply drawn wild animals that you can fill in the colors of. But the coloring book costs $200 and you can only use the coloring pens that are made by the same company that made the coloring book. A set of such pens cost $500. But they are safe, so when you try to color the turtle 🐢 it is likely it will become colored like a turtle. An MCU is like a book with 200 blank pages that cost $3. And you can use whatever pens you want, even the cheapest $0.10 pencils ✏️ work just fine. And you can draw whatever you want. The problem is that you need to know how to draw. But if you DO know how to draw, now you're free to draw whatever style of art you want. It doesn't have to be those cartoon animals. It can be something much more advanced and pretty. And it is ridiculously cheap compared to the coloring book. But if you don't know how to draw then the result will look really bad. The coloring book used to be a blank book before they changed it and put all those patterns on the pages. I know how to draw. Therefore coloring books are stupid to buy. I only buy the book with blank pages.

@@enque01 I am installing a PLC as an integrator. my answer is this: if you are satisfied with microprocessors, the system will be GOLD, more expensive than a PLC. Because the engineer who did it will leave, the whole system will be tied to him and YOU will have to program a new one from scratch, or feed the old engineer with gold. And when you buy a standard PLC solution, any automation engineer will come and support the system. So as long as you have one plant and you know all the wiring there, it’s convenient for you. But when you think like Rockefeller, you will buy PLCs from me, not microprocessors.

There are so many industrial automation engineers available outta there.. Manu programmers with good amount of multiple vendors training. Since corona hit, the demand for industrial automatin professionals is significantly decreased. Companies now mostly outsource most of the programming & HMI design works to cheap remote programmers. I think guys who are in their early career shall tailor their skills in building automation, as there seems to b a major push towards sustainable and green buildings recently not to mention new regulations of bms cuz of corona and all. I know you are all up for industrial automation but trust me man the demands for these professionals is continuosly declining

@wybo2
@wybo2 3 жыл бұрын
I felt exacly the same when I started out. What you describe is pretty much the max you can learn in a school anyhow, it is good enough for an entry level job. If you wish to crank up your skills a bit you could teach yourself CoDeSys. If you can't find a job right away, you could look up a real machine on youtube. Nothing too hard, something that has a few pistons and a few motors (motors that are either ON or OFF or have a simple speed-control. Belts, pumps, drill motors, hydraulic units, that sort of thing. Stay away from anything position-controlled like servos for now. You can revisit them those at a later point) Make the elektrical diagrams for a cabinet that could run this machine, including start and stop buttons, a button to acknoledge a error, etc. (use pencil and paper and dont worry about perfection) Write a PLC-program, not to control the machine, but to simulate each physical component in the machine. You can visulize all this in CoDeSys. Now you can write the PLC-program to control this virtual machine and test it out. Spice things up and imagine what could go wrong, like parts getting stuck, a motor breaking down, a sensor getting disconnected, etc. Now adapt your program to handle those things going wrong and test it in your simulated machine. Making a simulation of a real machine will be harder than you may think at first, so start simple.

@@MuhammadArslan-wo3re you should learn ladder logic with the brand of PLC that you will be using. The best 5hing is to have the hardware and experiment with the ladder logic by turning on lamps or something, then later interfacing to the pumps.
