Don't Be That Guy! Here's How To Aim Your Headlights!

I honestly can't tell you enough how many times we had other drivers flash us on the roads right after we bought our JL. Stock 33s and no lift, the headlights were aimed a bit too high, even from factory. So we corrected it.
And then again when we got 35" tires. And the lift, and 37" tires, and so on and so forth.
Unfortunately, it's not always something that people consider when they put larger tires on their vehicles, or even after installing lifts.
So here's a quick, and hopefully funny, "how to" on aiming your headlights!
Hope you all enjoy the video!
And, of course, don’t forget to follow my Instagram as well for more rad car stuff!

I thought it may have been a light bar under the headlights too. I remember driving my Saturn SL1 1999. That car was so low, like a Porsche 911 low, I refused to drive it at night. Because of tailgaters with the brightest lowbeams . I would often take my big suburban to drop off my son at my ex-wife s House.

@@missingremote4388 My other car is a 1992 lowered Miata Ive owned since new and my ass is less than 10 inches off the ground. The lights on new vehicles are absolutely blinding and I spend half my time staring at the shoulder to avoid being blinded by oncoming vehicles instead of looking whats in front of me. With tailgaters at least you can flip up the rear view mirror.

Interesting tidbit: My JL came from the factory with the halogen headlights aimed above spec and I've talked to people with the OE LED lights that report the same thing. So anyone with a JL, whether it's stock or lifted, need to check their headlight aiming and verify they are in spec. Nice video, thanks.

I had the Sport JLU (aka halogens, not LED) out for a test drive after sun down and was getting flashed for high beams. Luckily the one I actually took home was aimed properly off the lot!

I measure from the ground to the top of a door (bottom of the glass) on a typical sedan. Then make sure my headlights are just below that at about 20 to 25 feet. This ensures that I will not blind anyone within that proximity. I am on 40's and don't have any issues with others flashing their lights at me, and I can see pretty good and rarely even use my brights.

Funny many years ago this was part of safety inspections & they had calibration equipment that would let them set the right angles & tell the intensity. Hehe you're correct driver's side (keeping in mind that other countries that reverse driving lanes from USA also switch the side of sterling wheels & controls) so your statement rings true with the exception of vehicles that don't have drivers controls switched. I don't get flashed having set mine, but yes I get blinded by other vehicles even those not lifted usually do to aftermarket replacement lights that are not adjusted. People it's very dangerous to flash back & or then keep your high beams on at oncoming traffic (now you're both blind) heading for a potentially head on collision or veering off the road.

The way I have adjusted my headlights for years is to find a flat spot, like you did, with a "wall" and park about 20 ft from it. I then measure from the center of my headlights to the ground and then make a line using chalk on the "wall" at the same height. I then turn on the High beams and adjust them so they are centered on the line. Then check the low beam and make sure that it is below the line. (4 to 6 inches) And you should be good. Low beam must be below the line in order to keep from shining into the eyes of oncoming cars. :-)

If you pull your vehicle 25 foot from a wall/garage door, then you should adjust your headlights so the black out line/the top of the beam is around waist high. Unless you're short, then you may have to go chest high. lol.. If you walk up to an average car the bottom of the windows are around waist high, so that is why the blackout line should be set to that when you're around 25 foot from another vehicle.

Park 25 feet from the wall and adjust them where the top of the beam line is 4 to 5 inches lower than the center of your headlights. Waist high with a 6"lift and 40s would have them pointing straight down, on a small car they would be lighting up the tree tops

I guess I'm the only one who uses another vehicle, instead of a wall. To me, it just makes more sense to see where the light is hitting on an average sedan. I park 2-3 car lengths away from the front of a typical car and adjust the driver side light to be below their windshield. Then I park 2-3 lengths behind it and adjust the passenger side to be below the back window. I've always done it this way and have never been flashed.

Wishing death by death wobble... That's not a nice way to and the video! LOL. I think it's worth the effort to look up and follow the whole scientific method first. It's pretty easy with a tape measure and gets your headlights immediately to a position where you're not blinding people in oncoming traffic. Then if you feel you could inch them up from there that might be a better method instead of blinding people until you get them to the correct. But I certainly 100% agree with one thing... Aim your headlights! It might also be notable to mention that some of your cheaper aftermarket headlights on the market don't have a shop cut off like your light package showed on your JL and no matter how you aim those you're blinding everybody! A properly engineered headlight will have a sharp cut off line like yours shows on the wall. Yes, I'm real fun at parties!

I had a Jeep pull up behind me and I could feel the photons on the back of my neck. It also seems like the lamps them selves are putting out too much energy. To be real, the Jeep was originally designed for use in WW2, for off road use and not our highways. The original Jeeps were not jacked up and were much smaller but got bigger to keep up with the SUV craze. The main problem is that the headlights are too close together, boosting the intensity. Personally, I think many of them like the power of getting in other's faces; good old vanity!

Awesome video! I searched “British Columbia MVA headlamps” and it gives the legal requirements, it reads... (a) an upper beam of light which, regardless of the load on the vehicle, will reveal an object at a distance of 100 m, and (b) a lower beam of light which, regardless of the load on the vehicle, will reveal an object at a distance of 30 m and the high intensity portion of the lower beam will not strike the eye of an oncoming driver.” People need to know the laws on legal lights... and understand that the moment you put a trailer on the back, it makes legal lights no longer legal!! (Also, when you said “it might be different in other countries”... no. You said “drivers side should” be lower, you didnt say the left side should be lower... haha)

Nice, good knowledge for folks to have! You guys should do a video of adjusting the fog lights..... Had to do mine on the JK with the after market bumper. They are recessed and pointed right into the bumper ha. Love the channel, see y'all in the dirt one day.

I just go park about 25 feet from a regular car (prefer white with flat ass end) in a parking lot that’s level. I try to get it just below the drivers mirror. Then I go up to a wall and adjust the passenger side so it looks even. After that I test that sucker out. And bam! Yo shit is perfect.

Love your videos, and my 2 year old daughter loves your wheeling videos! She gets sucked in. Looking forward to getting my JL sometime next year and taking my daughter out on the trails myself.

These savages don’t understand how mistletoe puts one in the holiday spirit. Having watched several of your videos did you consider building an older and cheaper rig considering how hardcore your wheelin style is?

Her low beams are perfect...no adjustment needed. Seriously tho, what ever happened to the old school devices they had to adjust headlights at the mechanic? They stopped using them. Why I don't know. Thx for the video!

We used to pull up as close to the wall or garage door as possible. Then put a cross made out of black tape where each headlight projected on the wall then backup about 20 feet or so as long as you can still see each beam on the wall. Then adjust the beam just below the cross and and just to the right of the cross

The reason the left side is slightly lower than the right side is because the contour of the road is higher on the left side😊

Depends on the dealership too. The headlights are supposed to be adjusted at the dealership when they do the PDL on it. When I worked for Toyota back in 2000 that was our responsibility. Some places I guess don’t bother but I know the place I worked at did. But that is something that should be checked any time you do anything that effects the ride hight of your vehicle. God where I at I swear people go out of their way to get their lights as bright as possible and blind as many people as they can. Mostly the guys with the jacked up trucks on 22+ inch rims and low pro tires that never leave the pavement. Lol

Scott Nickolas There’s a lot of good info, presented well and in an entertaining way, in their videos. They are a smart, personable, pleasant, attractive couple, but I wouldn’t watch their videos if they weren’t good people. Brittney trips me out, she’d be fun to watch even if she was average looking. They are both fun and positive people - you don’t see that in too many YT videos I think I’ll buy a Jeep, an orange one. My son saw a JL on the road and that’s all he talked about for a week straight. He thinks they are funny, too - a 4-yr old loves this channel!
