Elliptical Parachutes have very small stabilizers and are very fast so if you stall them there is a chance that it will not recover like the older more stable parachutes used back in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. I actually performed a stall on a very fast elliptical parachute when it first came out called the Stiletto and I can attest that it is unpredictable. I stalled and then let up on one toggle to induce a stall spin and my lines corkscrewed to the point that it was locked in a reverse spin and I had to cut it away. Not much was known back then about how the elliptical parachutes responded to such stunts so I can see how this happened to this person since he was clearly spinning on his back when he cut away the main.
@chaos24764 жыл бұрын
I should also mention that I have over 3,000 skydives and jumped in the late 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's so I have a great deal of experience with different parachutes and what this skydiver did is not uncommon. I use to stall my parachutes all the time and only had to cut away 1 time as a result of the canopy becoming unrecoverable. The altitude that he performed this stall was fine as he was able to safely execute emergency procedures. This guy did the right thing by chopping quickly before the spin becomes so violent that you may not be able to even cut away the chute. I have seen this happen so it is possible. These elliptical parachutes are great and a hell of a lot of fun but you just need to be aware of the negative aspects of these types of parachutes.

Chaos It looks like a Sabre 2, like mine. They’re pretty bulletproof and not elliptical. I love it. Th first thing I did when I downsized to it was a high pull and repeatedly stall it. Once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s no thing right? This dude managed to stall this somehow, and at 1500’ I think I’d be doing my drills if my canopy had shit itself and twisted up. He did it decisively, quickly, and effectively. Landed it like a boss, no panic, it was textbook. Fair play to him. 🤙🏻

It had a habit of stalling right after opening and I lessened the amount of stow until it could open smoothly without stalling right after opening. @slartybarfastb36484 жыл бұрын
He induced an aerodynamic stall by shortening the brake lines. You may wrap a few loops around your hands, grab higher up the lines or his lines were out of trim (too short). This gives deeper braking than designed resulting in a stall. When the canopy stalls, the wing tips will fold back behind the jumper and forward airspeed will cease. If the recovery (releasing the brakes) is too abrupt or asymmetrical, the canopy will go into line twists which happened here. He was too low to resolve the issue and elected to cut away.
@TheAcenightcreeper4 жыл бұрын
Slartybarfast B can you explain what a stall is for people like me who have never jumped...why is it bad and cannot recover from? Why did he do those things if it was going to cause a stall? What would have happened if he just kept his main chute?
@slartybarfastb36484 жыл бұрын
@@TheAcenightcreeper A stall is when there is not enough air flowing over a wing to maintain lift or the air flow is disturbed and separates from the wing's surface. With a ram-air parachute, the wing is inflated by air entering the wing through openings in the leading edge. The trailing edge is closed which traps the air inside these cells. Because of this, during a stall, the parachute wing not only loses lift but also rigidity. Skydivers practice stalls because, while a rare occurrence, they can happen unintentionally. Recognizing when a stall is about to occur can help prevent them and proper recovery is helped through practice. This jumper had an assymetric stall which caused the parachute to spin faster than the jumper's body could follow. This caused line twists. The suspension lines wrap up into a single tight column. While these twists may usually be worked out without further incident, this particular situation caused a spinning downplane. The canopy spins rapidly while it enters a vertical dive. Speeds during a downplane can be near freefall speeds. A safe landing during this condition is not possible.
@TheAcenightcreeper4 жыл бұрын

I don’t think he did it for fun... I have never heard of anybody cutting away for fun, and if you do you are nothing short of remarkably stupid. Granted, I jump round-canopies but have 3 AFF square-canopy jumps, so I am not an expert, but I’ll give it my best analysis. The small rectangular blue piece of fabric just above the risers is called a slider, the suspension lines are fed through four grommets on each corner of the slider, as the parachute deploys the slider slides down the suspension lines from the skirt of the parachute and stops right above the risers. This is called “reefing” the parachute and the purpose is to control and slow the deployment and spread of the suspension lines and slow the inflation of the canopy to dissipate the shock of the canopy deploying. Without a reefing system, if the canopy just instantly fills with air when deploying it is going to be quite a violent opening shock for the jumper. The military style round canopies that I jump Do not have a slider, so we have a very specific way of folding and packing The parachute so that, if done correctly, the canopy will begin to inflate from the top and work its way down, slowing the inflation of the canopy and allowing more time for the suspension lines to feet out from the deployment bag and take up slack before full canopy deployment (There’s a particular step in the packing sequence that is critical for that to happen and sometimes you get an unusually violent whip upon deployment and that tells you that you didn’t do that step correctly). With square canopies, because it is a ram air airfoil that is essentially a wing while inflated, they are much more high-performance than round canopy parachutes, and sometimes in certain attitudes or wind gusts one side of the canopy can collapse which will immediately induce a spin which usually causes what we call line twist (this is common for us in round canopies, and if the parachute is fully inflated and the suspension lines are simply twisted we refer to that as a low speed malfunction because we still have full lift, just no toggle control). Sometimes the canopy reinflates and you can untwist yourself, but sometimes it causes the canopy to collapse completely and you can end up with a streamer/partial-streamer which is a high-speed malfunction and an immediate cutaway emergency. Even if a square canopy reinflates and all you have is line twist, because square canopies are high-performance, highly maneuverable parachutes depending on your attitude/altitude, the wind conditions, the DZ terrain, it may be safer to cut away so as to regain immediate canopy control vs fighting the line twist and not having toggle control until you rectify it. Basically at the two minute mark in this video you can observe a rapid twist occur, that’s not from him turning the canopy, I am quite confident that something happened to cause either a partial streamer or a dangerous line twist situation, and given his low altitude an immediate cutaway was appropriate. I couldn’t figure out why the title implied that he screwed up at first but what I think they’re referring to is the fact that basically the jumper is cinching up the little cords to stow the slider (i’m not sure if this is a slightly complacent technique to expedite getting repacked and back on the bird for another jump or if there is some aerodynamic affect from it, however to my knowledge I don’t believe the slider has any significant aerodynamic affect be it deployed or cinched up), so basically I think he was being complacent and fucking around with the slider when he should’ve been on the toggles and flying to parachute... given the terrain it’s likely he was dealing with some wind gusts. But a square canopy guy would have to answer that question regarding the slider, but he does experience a malfunction at the two minute mark and opted to cut-away. If any more experienced jumpers have any corrections or further thoughts please feel free to correct me. Neat vid
