Wait, I have this car for years now and I used it for like 200.000 miles. I had 0 issues so far except once I had to change Particular Filter. Where did you get this car when you have this many problems with it? In China? Is this replica?! Man 90% of the stuff that you are telling people here is total bullshit.

Bought my 2009 328 back in late 2019 and it had 75k miles 1 owner and a dictionary for a service history . Everything was in great condition . $6500 and I don’t regret a penny ! Trick is to stay on top of it . Change that oil every 8-10k . One thing about these e90s is majority of the work you can do yourself ! Say away from the dealership and educate yourself on maintenance. You should be able to change your coolant , oil , power steering ,ignition coils , cabin air filter , engine air filter and the ability to rotate your tires all at home if you have a jack and a couple stands ! Save $1000s of dollars and do it at home

So far 2010 E92 stright 6 as for (no turbos) naturally aspirated that has 116980 miles and maintenance is very minimal, oil changes every 3800 miles for the last 12years. 2 battery's, oil housings gasket done , spark plugs BOSCH, valve cover gasket done. And the intake/ exhaust vano's both. 1 coil so far. Probably soon all other coils. And a temp sensor. Nothing more so far. All and all it's a real good running car YES, BMW is a good vehicle. I had to replace 2 sticky door handles, driver's cup holder, and put the stock stereo BACK IN. Car drives great. I'll keep an eye on valve cover gasket and water pump. It's a 6-speed! nice summary justin. first before buying, do a VIN check. the options show up complete, and that way its possible to see if something is missing or substantially changed. my comfort access did not work, and in fact i didn't even know i had it until i saw the three little ridges on the top of the door handle. the 5A fuse for CA is blown, indicating a short in the door handle module, which i just got replacements for - waiting on paint and weather to fix it. should add the matter of early E90 valve lifter noise. later models (after 2010) have the hyd lifers fixed. also oil changes should never exceed 7500 miles - the risk with the NA versions (not 335 which does not use Vavletronic throttle) is wear on the vanos seals, which can require a new valvetronic head if the wear is on the intake side. the cam carrier on the exhaust side (called the ledge) can be replaced. i don't believe the M Sport package is available on the X drive models. my E91Xi touring has the sport package, with 17" wheels, bolstered and thigh adjust seats, and paddle shifters - all fun. the seats are the best part, as they are really comfortable. my E91Xi came with about 85K, so i planned to do the water pump and t-stat pre-emptively. this is a fussy job, with lots of tight clearances, but doable with a relatively complete rack of tools. look on e90 post forums for DIY guidance. a skilled wrencher should plan on 8 hours. another item on the list of early must do's is to drop the trans pan (automatic here) and change fluid and trans filter. this bears repeating - i've seen lifetime trans fluid fail, resulting in a trans swap at 120K. i use Ranger Quick Jacks to get the car in the air for work, and would likely choose them over a lift, when taking account of cost and space requirements. as for amenities, i like a custom sound system, and the only way to do it easily is with the base Hi Fi package. all the connectors are analog RCA, and there are loads of options for replacement speakers. the higher end packages use a proprietary digital data format directly into the BMW amps, and leave far fewer choices for aftermarket sound. i added SWS 8" 4 ohm woofers, which is not exactly a bolt in (some fab to mount the speaker needed - again E90post forums were great). i bought component speakers and the matching crossovers from Individual Audio cars from ebay - that is all plug and play. finally, for my amp, i used an Arc Audio 6 channel 1200W, bought a technic connector (again E90post), and fabbed some simple bars to mount it in the drivers side rear area after removing the stock HiFi amp. running the 6 gauge wire from the battery terminals on the other side was dead simple. the 6 gauge wire uses stock BMW connectors that plug directly into the terminal block that lives on top of the battery, which makes for a very clean install. keep up the good work, newly sub'd/

Man, If you see green coolant it's not that it's probably a bad sign, it's almost certainly a really bad sign. As you point out, that's probably going to be only the tip of the cheap maintenance iceberg. I don't know why people skimp on buying the correct coolant, irrespective of the brand of car. Generic coolants in particular are a potential minefield these days. Geez people, we're not dealing with friggin cast iron dinosaurs any more. Genuine BMW coolant isn't really all that expensive anyway, and it's a truckload cheaper than rebuilding your engine after your cooling system spits it's pacifier. Thanks for your videos mate. Keep it up.

Haha, true story I'm sure Justin. It's a shame to see German engineering getting abused like that. But there's a silver lining to this little cloud and that is, it's people like that who help to keep the multitude of good after market parts manufacturers in business. Ultimately, that gives you and me an array of products to choose from whenever we go to sites like oembimmer or Pelican for our maintenance stuff. Happily, I find it's only rarely that I'll need to buy anything that has "Genuine" on it. Fluids though? Pretty much Always. Cheers mate.

Service manual does not mention color. To quote: www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-316i-lim/repair-manuals/17-cooling/1HZe3We The cooling system of BMW vehicles must only be filled with the anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents approved for this purpose. [...] Antifreeze agents must meet the following requirements: - They must guarantee operability of the cooling system in winter (anti-freezing protection by lowering the freezing point) and in summer (prevent boiling and boiling over of the coolant). - They must protect metal components that come into contact with the coolant (grey cast iron, steel, aluminium alloy, brass, copper and solder) against corrosion and cavitation. - They must be neutral with respect to rubber and plastic parts in the coolant circuit. - They must guarantee the consistency of the above-mentioned quality criteria. To create these coolant properties, the anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents must be mixed to the correct ratio with water.

Buying an older used BMW, or any other used luxury car for that matter, is only considered a good buy if you have the knowledge to fix them. I believe some of the issues noted with the E90 are very similar for other model BMW's. In fact, I would expect that you would have to have those repairs done if you're buying an older used BMW. IMHO, don't buy a used BMW unless you plan on doing the repairs yourself. Otherwise, you'll end up spending more in repairs at a shop than the car is worth and will be regretting your purchase. If you want a generally trouble free car, stay away from used BMW's and buy a small Honda or Toyota. Seriously. - Long time E36/E46 owner.

Followed Justin since the early days, I had just bought my e90. Have to say his experience has been relatively good because his car is very low mileage. Most high mileage BMW's will give you drama with cooling systems, perennial fluid leaks and sometimes even more serious engine system failures, all of which are greatly exacerbated by owner negligence.

I’ve heard that water pumps and head gaskets can go sometimes. 3-Series tends to be the most reliable of the BMW brand. It’s not the sale price of the BMW that does in owners of a used 3-Series, it’s the actual maintenance which can get quite expensive. An oil change is $300 at the BMW dealership...something to think about.

187 000km now on my 2009 318D touring. Bought min at 70 000km with the notorious N47 engine with the known timing chain problems. I just now start to hear the timing chain rattle . Looking past that There are some hiccups that has happened to early in this cars life. 1. Side mirror glass got loose and almost fell off on both sides (got replaced) . 2. The back window wiper sized (got replaced) 3. both sub woofers under the seats stop working(no I did not spill anything on them.) 4. The front door seals are getting bad and allot more noise can penetrate in to the cabin then before. 5. I can now hear the turbo whine when the engine is cold(did not do that before) So probably on it's way out. 6. The front lights plastic lens is starting to crackle.(micro cracking) 7. The paint on the rear bumper behind the back wheels has started to scale off.(not repainted, original paint) 8.Remote keys don't work anymore.(no it's not bad keys it's a faulty antenna circuit board that costs $400 for a new one) This is some of the things that I can remember on the top of my head. I previously Drove a tired 2001 Opel Vectra with over 300 000km on it and none of these thing that I mentioned above happen on it nor the very old 1985 Mazda 323 I had before the Opel. My wife drives a BMW X3 and the same things shine through here. BMW quality is BAD. But don't get me wrong here, I really like them at the same time. The handling of these cars are very good so that's why I stick to BMW for mow. But don't go around saying that BMW is quality that last's, coz it's not. Oh And I do take good care of my cars so there is no lack of maintenance. I changed oil on my E91 318D every season. Mush more often then BMW recommends and still I get a turbo thats on its way out and timing chain tensioners that no longer does there job.

I have a confession. I unwillingly traded in my beloved 2009 E90 for a 2017 Mercedes GLE. It was hard. I bought that 3 series brand new, and I loved everything about it. But during the past several years I began having a lot of problems with it and I was spending obscene amounts of money on repairs. I mean, seriously obscene amounts of money. The car began to break down often. The last two times I took it to the dealership they insisted nothing was wrong with it after charging me over a thousand dollars to repair oil leaks and other stuff. I knew then that I was going to get another car, but I wasn't getting any love from BMW. The folks at the dealership were just nasty and acted like they weren't interested in my business. So I went to the Mercedes dealer up the street. I was never really a fan of Mercedes, but I'm learning to like my new ride. I'm seeing that bigger, and faster, and prettier, and newer doesn't necessarily mean better. I would still have preferred the BMW, but... I'm still going to keep watching your videos for general maintenance tips and care. I plan to trade this Mercedes in a couple years for an X5.

Two questions. 1. If I want wash the engine, do I have to cover something? High pressure water. Add something to the water, to erase greese? 2. Is there some type of display, that I can add, install, and not make holes in the dash bord? If yes homepage. An E91 330d.

BMW manual transmissions are great (I have owned four BMWs, three were manuals with close to 200k miles each... all manuals were rock solid transmissions) I currently own a 2007 328xi wagon with an automatic. The early E90s have GM built automatics which are very prone to issues (pumps in these transmissions wear prematurely causing low hydraulic pressure throughout the transmission which dominos into many other issues). Rebuilds are more than $2k. New transmissions are $6k Also- you left out Crankshaft speed sensors fail ($65 part but takes several hours to install) Vanos sensors fail ($150 for a set, 30 minutes to install) Nicer car to own than the e46 or e30 (e90 wagons have fantastic cargo capacity and AWD is amazing in snow). My E46 And e30s were more sporty. e90s are slightly less reliable then e46 cars in my experience.

Just bought a 2006 330xi for a daily driver today. I saw on the car fax that thermostat and pump replaced around 40k. Regular maintenance looked proper. The driver mirror folds in and keeps trying to go so I will have to replace or maybe find some diy-ish. Blower motor was good and heated seats worked. Thanks for the video. I'll check the headlight fluid pooling when I pick up next week.

Don't be fooled by rebuilt title. I have rebuilt 335xi, bought it from auction for cheap, very little damage to the front. I fixed all the common issues with N54 and it drives as it should. Also did a lot of preventative maintenance things. Not all rebuilt cars are junk, just ask for pictures from auction. If they don't have it or they don't want to show you, something was way too wrong with the car.

funny how nobody mentions problem with rear diff (final drive). I have got my replaced after 145 kkm (roughly 100k miles) on my 330d 2009 with another second hand. and now also that one failed. Also i see shops at ebay specialized on selling reconditioned final drives so its not just me having the problem. And no, its not cheap to fix it, new one 2-3k EUR/USD excluding removal/installation.

I bought a 2007 328xi wagon 2 years ago. The one and only issue that cost me $1500 to fix was the water pump. Other than that, it's been rock solid. I didn't care for the iDrive, since I heard it was very problematic. So it wasn't an option I wanted. I definitely would love to source out the aluminum trim to replace the outdated wood trim. My only wish was I found a wagon in manual transmission.

Just traded in a really nice Lexus LS 430 that was a hell of a good car: but I had a 735 BMW prior to that, and it was in fact a "drivers car". SO: I did my homework, and got an '09 535IX with all the goodies ('cept the M package...) and made it 85 miles before the power steering and battery lights came on. Seems that "sucking in the serpentine belt" is a regular occurrence, if oil gets on the belt.. Fortunately the seller gave me no grief in honoring the warrantee I had purchased from him, so I will pick up the car a second time this week. Good tip on the coolant: I thought it applied only to the magnesium blocks.. Thanks!

Just Subscribed. I hope you read & respond??? One thing that should be known is the Harmonic Balancer or Crankshaft pulley. They will fail & when they do they don't give much warning. I just purchased a 2010 335d. I has 118k on the odometer. Car is in immaculate condition. However after driving only around 1200 miles after having it the damn harmonic balancer came apart & wouldn't turn the belts as it's supposed to. So today I have spent a couple hr's removing the balancer so I am ready to install the new one when it comes in. Outside of that the car is an absolute blast to drive. I would rather work on a car I absolutely love verses have one that just gets me from A to B.

colour has very little to do with whats in coolant & what's suitable for your paticular model & brand of car. so therefore I'll have to disagree with your opinion on this although if anyone decides to change coolant brand make sure it is compatible with your car & you do a complete coolant flush prior to adding new coolant.
