Random KZbin man spittin facts. I grew up loving cars, but never had the means to get into it as a hobby (apart from videogames) but i've been actively riding bikes since 2016 and built my first fixed gear in 2022 out of an old peugeot frame. Currently I own 11 bikes (2 of them fexed gears with another frame chilling in my living room) and i couldn't imagine a nicer hobby as someone who grew up a "car guy". Also another similarity: it's pretty fun to go fast.

I guess there's a reason why all my co-workers at my old bike shop job were former mechanics, tuners, fab guys etc. And the guys that weren't in the car field were into racing or working on their own cars at home, me included. It's fascinating though how car guys specifically get into bikes, and not motorcycle guys or any other group. Also, a lot of professional racecar drivers are absolute bike nuts, which just strengthens the connection there.

I’ve been getting into bikes fairly recently, its been a blast and I have some tips to share if you are dead broke like me. 1- So many people have bikes they don’t use anymore, start asking around and you will find one fairly quickly. I suggest starting with old people with garages. 2- If some nice granny gives you her old single speed, you can convert that to a fixie for cheap saving you the cost of buying the whole bike. 3- A lot of cities have bike co-ops or non profits that will let you use their tools if you just ask, save the tool money this way. Have fun!

Good lord I hope this video reaches every car enthusiast in the world. I've always thought about the parallel between riding fixed and driving stick. Bike nerds usually have really good taste in cars as well. I will say other bikes aren't worth excluding from this. Fixed is the best place to start by far, but BMX has a similar feel but with more of a skating vibe, road bikes can be really cool to build up but ultimately not as fun and lamer community. Mountain bikes are just cool, all different types, dirt jumping is my primary discipline. All of it is worth exploring, so what I'm saying is don't put yourself in the trap most of us have by trying to alienate your discipline of choice from the other ones. Let yourself explore them, or don't.

Driving is very expensive, very dangerous, and terrible for urban development. I spend a lot of money on gas and maintenance doing food delivery, so when I'm not working, I have the option of riding my bike to do personal things like getting groceries. I always rode BMX bikes because I love how small, lightweight, and simple they are. They also look awesome. However, I live in a town with a large elevation range, so a little BMX with a 25:9 gear ratio isn't the best option. I went looking for used Dutch-style bikes and found one I liked. It needed more work than I thought (Shimano Nexus 3 speed internal hub was missing a part, which is why it wasn't shifting), so it's at the shop for a little bit, but it's comfortable to ride and I'm excited for it to be fully operational. It's also a sick bronze colour, it's a head-turner for sure.

Nope. I still don't really see the point of fixed gear bikes, aside from the hipster factor. You can find a wide array of affordable parts for any class of bicycle, as long as you stay away from modern fancy brands, which have all gone insane with expensive proprietary parts. The industry used to be quite standardized, and those old standards are still alive and well in the budget focused market segments. I ride an aging hybrid that has accumulated loads of cheap mods, as I've gradually replaced worn out parts with different parts that better suited my needs. Soon there won't be much left of the original bike but the frame. It's also been fairly easy to work on. None of it is particularly fancy. Just needed to buy a few cheap tools online. Personally, I love how that hybrid is ok at everything. It's not too cumbersome for long road trips, and not too fragile for gnarly mountain trails. Should i get curious I can simply turn off the main road and follow muddy, mysterious logging roads up into the hills, and my bike will just handle it all adequately, with it's wide range of closely spaced gears. I've made it quite heavy with all my mods, but that weight never really bothered me. (Many bike enthusiasts way overestimate the impact of weight.) That bike is also my main way of getting around town, and for that purpose it's often just as fast as driving, except it's way easier to find parking spots. I love my janky bike. Just buy or build whichever bike you want to ride. It's not an expensive hobby unless you decide to make it expensive. There's a lot of brands pushing grossly overpriced and/or non-standard tech, but that stuff has a very marginal impact on real performance. You're not really buying power. You are the motor! If you want to go faster, just become more powerful! That's the aspect I find the most addictive anyways. I don't achieve my speed with expensive tech or exotic materials. Just simple brute force and stamina.

I agree big time. I love cars and driving them but... I don't have a car. I have 2 bikes though, one road and one beloved fixed gear. Fixed gear isn't practical (especially if you have hills in your city), but it's just fun and very different to a "normal" geared bike. The way it propels itself forward due to the fixed drivetrain is a great feeling. Cars are cool too, but while living in an European city I don't need it at all, especially considering how much it costs to buy and maintain. One thing though, if you have never ridden a bike or you did long time ago, DON'T GO BRAKELESS straightaway. I would say going brakeless is stupid and dangerous, but at some point you might do it. Just don't do it when you are learning. I was riding bikes for 20 years regularly before getting a fixed gear and I was FUCKING SCARED when I hopped straight on to a brakeless one and went for a ride. Controlling it is a new skill and at the beginning prepare yourself for training new leg muscles that you didn't know you had.

So maneuverable and light, looks cool, simple setup, albeit not the most practical. I really don't have any desire to push around something bigger that allows me to sit comfortably. I like the single, short, difficult gear ratio (it's a good workout). I always considered it the sports coupe of the bike world, so it's funny to see the two worlds compared.
