The one thing that attracted me the most to my BMW F10 M5 is the special paint it came equipped with. It's unique, very rare and a great conversation starter at car meets. And that is where the positives end. While the Frozen Black paint job is a true neck breaker, the maintenance it requires get's rather frustrating really quickly. One thing is researching the pros and cons before buying car with matte paint but another thing is actually owning the car and facing reality. In today's video I'll share my experience with my M5 and hopefully allow you all to get a better understanding as to why you shouldn't go the same route I went.

An M car is meant to drive like you stole it but all he's saying is that it's best to get it with traditional glossy paint...that way you can ceramic coat it and buff out any scratches right before you sell it if such a time comes.

It is just a car my man. I am particular about my cars as well, within reason. This goes out to every car enthusiast and the new 'influencers', whatever that is - If you can afford this vehicle, and I mean truly afford the car - have it wrapped and enjoy it. All things end up in the land field eventually. Enjoy your things, life is all too short to worry about scratches in paint.

I was looking into wraps but its really a rip off. if you do it yourself its cool but other than that they dont last long so you are getting robbed. you might as well paint your shit......i hate having shit everyone else has and i am getting ready to paint my car a matte color but i would think there should be ceramic coats that protect against scratches for matte colors. It really cant be that bad to deal with.

Just so you know it isn't the way clearcoat is applied, it's an additive that gives it the satin look. But you're right, it's super hard to match as most paint companies i.e. PPG, Axalta etc only have a specific satin and matte clear which can't be adjusted.

You gotta do what makes you feel good about the car. Sorry to hear the paint is a stress maker but eventually you will figure out which direction to take and who knows, you may decide on a different color of black to wrap it one day. The thing you own is now owning you. Drive it like you would normally, it will end up with scratches whatever you try to do to avoid that. You might save some time but by that time you will want to repaint the damn thing anyway :)

Get the whole car wrapped in matte paint protection film, if you wanna keep the matte which i think you should but that’ll keep it protected for the future

It’s definitely a tough decision. I’m not as much of a perfectionist as you so I’d probably ignore the rock chips before I ppf’d the whole thing. I definitely noticed the difference and what you were referring to with the protection film on. I’m sure you’ll make the right move that works for you though 💯

Paint protection film or a wrap if you want a change of colour too, both will preserve the current paintwork, your roads look like a dream over there in the uk the roads are a lot worse with potholes and small bricks everywhere

Got my dream 335i with red interior and n54 with a lot of goodies pre installed about 2 months ago. Its stored now but before winter came i was driving it whenever i had the chance. The only problem with it is, its got rock chips up the ASS and scratches and one small dent in the rear quarter. It justified me absolutely driving the piss out of it because yaknow, if i dont care about the paint then whats there to lose. A car is more fun the less care you have, thats something to remember.

Thanks, great content. It really comes down to the person's use of the vehicle and how and where they drive. The ppf would be a personal choice. Theres other ppf brands specifically for matte black that'll keep the appearance the same, but for that ppf I wouldn't have done it on the entire car, it changed the color too much. At that point it might as well be a black glass color all around. I would have taken it off as well. On the other hand, I would've left thr ppf on just the front grill bare minimum.

I have the same car (pre lci) in the same colour. Owned for 5 years and the only thing I can recommend is using autoglym extra protect or a similar product. It will give a very slight sheen but not too noticeable and helps prevent the fine swirls from washing. Bmw recommend touchless car wash for obviouse reasons if you have that option but I just jetwash and then hand wash. Rock chips are the main problem as you say but I did get a small base coat touch up from my local auto paint centre to help hide the worst ones. Tbh I've done 74k miles on uk roads and it still looks pretty decent so don't give up on it yet...you get used to it! I also have seen a ceramic coating for matte cars but can't remember the brand. My car is 9 years old and I still get alot of good comments on the look so can't be all that bad lol. Good luck!

Sadly As much as I kinda like the frozen black keeping the factory paint good and clean and in optimum shape....wrapping the car might give you a much better piece of mind and be able to hold the value of it Maybe they can come up with a wrap that’s very close to the factory paint in order to retain the look and feel of it and also keep the paint under either as good as you can

I felt the same way driving mine without the PPF, luckily I don't have your paint... Mine is more satin finish, but you can't see the PPF and I did the whole front end with pieces behind the rear wheels and the door cups along with my carbon fiber lip and side skirts. Wrap it in a stealth protective film. Not sure how the matte effect would be after using satin stealth film. But I’d say that would be the best bet to maintain the factory color👍. Update: looks like you gonna do it lol

Bro any car on the road is gonna get stone chips regardless. If your that bothered about chips and scratches just get a clear wrap on it that way you won't be stressing about it. And can just replace a panel if the wrap does get scratched. Most common sense thing to do in your situation.

Why not xpel clear the whole entire car after a professional detail/ceramic coating (if that’s even doable on Matte) the few scratches you have doesn’t ruin the car really and after clear wrapping it you won’t have to worry nearly as much

I have a frozen bronze metallic paint, I’ve never seen anyone on the roads with this color and I get compliments all the time. I usually do a touch less wash and hand dry with a special cloth. My paint is fine but now im having second thoughts because lately everyone’s commenting how there’s a special way you should wash it and shouldn’t be a daily driver. My paint has been fine in my honest opinion, but if there’s additional recommendations send them my way 🥺

I've seen that color in person and it looks stunning! Use PH neutral car soap. Not the ones that have wax in them. Many companies sell car shampoo that's designed for matte cars, like chemical guys. Also when drying, I wouldn't recommend excessively rubbing the car. It'll buff the car over time and the paint will start to smooth out and get shiny.

I have a bought new 2020 AMG GTR in magno blue and have zero issues with it. I can't imagine being so paranoid what a bummer way to not enjoy a car.
