Dear radiotvphononut, After watching this video I decided not to buy one of those crosley machines. Instead i had my old technics amplifier and record player serviced. They both perform and sound just perfect, thanks for the advice!

Many turntables from the '60's and '70's will work with modern day stereo equipment. The main requirement is that they be stereo (two-channel) turntables and contain a magnetic cartridge. Even if it's an old model with a ceramic cartridge, it may be possible to convert it to use a magnetic cartridge; but, I generally leave equipment the way it was originally designed. Of course, anything "old" will need to be restored; but, the effort and expense is usually worth it in the end.

I agree. My sister bought her husband a Crosley unit for Christmas. It may look "retro" but in reality it's a piece of junk! The turntable looked super cheap. I wanted to tell her she wasted her money, but they'll have to find out for themselves. My dad bought a used fridge/freezer in 1970 for $15. It's still humming away happily in the basement. It was made in 1948. It's heavy and solid as can be. Nothing like products like that, built to last!

Can we have an update on the fridge? I hope it still works now.

I bought a similar unit about 3years ago . Used it about 3 hours a day . Still works perfectly . I use extra speakers for better sound although the internal ones are not that bad . Ok it's flimsy compared to old stuff but if you are careful with it , no real problem . It has got me back into vinyl and cassettes again so for what it cost it does a decent job . It may not last another 50 years .... but neither will I !!

The saddest point is the one you made about the records. Lots of younger people find old records that their parents owned and enjoyed and they buy these record players not knowing that they're about to destroy records that have lasted 60 years in great condition
@pip5528 Жыл бұрын
It's a common misconception that these would completely destroy them after a few plays. For one thing It's the same tracking force as cheap 1960s turntables and this particular mechanism has been around since the 1980s and while terrible, you're not going to notice much difference until over 100 plays. I still wouldn't recommend these cheap things with lackluster build quality and I've been happy with a U-Turn Orbit and Technics SL-1210GR but still.

I started collecting radios in '89 & for Christmas of that year, my Dad gave me a Thomas cathedral radios with the side mounted cassette player. That thing never worked right from day one. It motorboated on both AM and FM and the cassette player didn't last long. A few years ago, a guy at my church asked me to fix a Crosley similar to this one (his did not have a CD player). The radio was the only thing that worked & it was tinny sounding. I gave him a tube phonograph & tossed his.

I have had a Crosley AM/FM, 3 speed turntable, CD and Cassette player for six years.. Everything works fine except the crappy CD player. I had to return the first one I purchased because the function switch was wired incorrectly. Yes, the turn table is a belt drive. However a belt drive will isolate any motor noises from the pick-up. The tonearm is very light. I was in the juke box business for 20 years, then worked with centrifuges. I know what a good turntable sounds like and mine sounds fine. All phonograph motors are DC now, not just the cheap ones. they are smaller, quieter, and use less electricity. As for the veneer, it looks great. I never had a problem with it. I am surprised that the cassette player is still working. They usually break first. The speakers have a very nice sound as well. Is it a cheaply made item? Hell yes, I never expected mine to last so long! When it breaks, I will probably purchase another. I have received my money's worth out of this one. I paid under $100.00. I purchased it for the 3 speed turntable. I have a large collections off 33's, 45's, & 78's. It is almost impossible to purchase any electronics which are not made by the Commies. What is the alternative, even Grundig has their audio equipment made it China. Do I drive an import? No, I drive my 50 year old Ford. Very dependable and easy to service. See my KZbin uploads "Lionel Trains Made In China" and "1965 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible 330 HP 289"

The issue is some of us are left with this so called 'low quality' new age record players because if anything goes wrong on a classic one you'll be screwed for parts. And not everyone has the money to professionally get the family player restored. @RetroPCDOS, I agree. In fact, I pick up every vintage receiver or turntable that I find that looks like it may be somewhat decent. There's always been low-end junk out there as long as there's been an electronics industry; but, I think most of yesterday's junk was better than today's junk. My first stereo was a second-hand Electrophonic all-in-one system with a plastic BSR record changer from the mid '70's and even that one sounded better than a current Crosley.

I have recently looked at one of these and they are real crap sold to the ignorant. They have the worst needles-ruin a record in one playing, cheesy switches & controls, CD players that a CD even gets stuck in it. Also a poor tuner section and a tendency to burn out.
@shaunw92708 жыл бұрын
These things look and sound cheap. Cheap is only good if the quality is there. There are plenty of old record players out there for sale on the 'net, charity shops, junk shops, ask around. If you are in the UK look out for 1950's or 60's Dansette brand. These were hand wired point to point valve (tube) internals with a wonderful Goodmans speaker. Other notable brands 50's to 70's would be Pye (featuring Garrard direct drive turntables) , Fidelity and Ferguson (featuring BSR direct drive turntables). After the late 60's most of these will be solid state but still hand-wired onto tag board as opposed to modern flow-soldered PCB's. If you are looking for cheap seperates , people seem to forget Pioneer and Technics belt drive turntables from the 80's & 90's . If you can find very cheap it's worth taking a chance on because if these things without modern PCB's breakdown , they can be repaired and made to last another 50 years !

Your best option would be to buy a used component style stereo (Pioneer, Kenwood, etc) from the '70's-early '80's. Zenith, Motorola, RCA, Magnavox, GE, Philco, etc. all made decent portable and console model record players during the '50's and '60's. The only problem is that anything that old will likely need to be restored; but, it will be well worth the expense and effort.

Find a reputable audio shop. My opinion.

Out of all the new turntables that I've looked at, I'd go with the Audio Technica AT-PL120. This is a 3-speed direct drive DJ-style turntable that has a built-in phono preamp for connecting to amplifiers/receivers that don't have a magnetic phono input. You'll also need a stereo amp or receiver and speakers to connect the turntable to. Don't buy one of the cheaper under-$100 Audio Technica turntables because those are not much better than a Crosley.

I bought one of these three years ago, not this model but the one that is a stacking record changer only. The man on the video is correct. The tracking force was much too high, but I lightened it to 3 grams. It was easy to do. Instructions to do this were in the owner's manual, and the unit has functioned perfectly ever since without any record wear problems. My gripe is the quality of its sound, or rather the lack of it. To call the sound poor is being generous! Twelve volts can't do it!

I bought my daughter a pink crosley because she is very interested in the way her daddy plays music on record players unlike mommy who squeezes music out of the computer. If you mess around with it you can fine tune the tracking force and where the rm stops. I have taught her to use the cue lever gently and never set the needle down in the music grooves . I bought her a pile of kids records off ebay and washed them all up and put them in new sleeves and I can tell you for the pure enjoyment of the vinyl experience I couldnt go wrong. BUT! I know it will never sound like a quality turntable through a stereo sytem and I probably wont spin any of my stuff on it. HEY Are we forgetting why we have vinyl, cassettes, cds, i-pods ect? to LISTEN to music.....thats about it! My parents brought me a Crosley Radiogram with a cassette player for Christmas in '00. I was in high school, simply enjoying vinyl. To my surprise the console is solid pine, no vernier. Pine is not the greatest breed of wood but it is solid. In the past 17 years in it (and myself) has endured three major cross country moves, 16 jobs and puberty. No problems what so ever. Vinyl sound maybe be a bit more "raspy" than a 80s Sanyo turn table. But it serves it's purpose. The console still looks as new and the turntable has been reliable, hadn't replaced the needle yet. Well, I guess I just lucked out.

You'll see tons of people on youtube with these pieces of trash and they think and act like it's some high end unit. The people seem so amazed by it but you are right concerning how cheap this junk is. Sadly you can't fix stupid and the people who buy those things do not know anything about vinyl or audio equipment.

Hey Guy,I have a Crosley and Anders Nicholson Stereo for about 5-6 years. Both are Very Beautiful Units. The wood is Wood,and one is Oak,the other is Cherry---Very Beautiful Units. All the 5 in 1 functions work great,with no problems. Both have a very Good Sound. I have referred these units to friends,and they are Very Happy with their same units.For the good prices on these units,you are getting a Very Good Value.

I would never recommend a Crosley brand to anyone. I owned one for five months and it simply ceased functioning one day. Unit was never dropped, bumped, or otherwise disturbed. The only function I used on it was the CD player, and now when I attempt to listen to anything I get double zeros on the display and it won't play. Complete waste of money. The exact same thing happened to my mother's Crosley, so clearly not an isolated incident. It looks nice, but at the end of the day it's clearly a poorly designed piece of equipment that won't function as intended. Throw your money away if you want.

Wow, radiotvphononut.... This is the most truthful thing I've ever seen on KZbin. I'm a member on Vinylengine and post frequently. All of this is true... I used one briefly when I got back into vinyl. Now my Venom album has moderate surface noise... ;(... I soon serviced my Philips 312 and played that. Now I got a Kenwood KD-2070 and a Kenwood KD-50f. Both of which can be purchased for $200 or less. These turntables can be used though... But for something else... On rough albums that tend to still have a skip after cleaning, I play it through the same model you're reviewing to remove that lump/spec/(mild)scratch. Other than that, they are terrible for sound reproduction. Both the record player, CD player, and the Radio. Face it, the speakers are internal and you're getting more internal vibrations inside the turntable, CD, and cassette which causes distortion. Those looking for good vintage turntables (that are about the same price as this crap) try brands such as Kenwood, Sansui, Philips, Technics, Pioneer, Thorens, Marantz, or Dual. Do your research before buying. Always! If it doesn't have a counter weight, or an anti-skate... FFS! Great review.

I have a Retro Crosley AM/FM Radio that you can plug your iPhone/iPod in and play that too and it sounds great and is used daily for over 5 years now and is still going strong. You can tell this Bumpkin is anti anything not American and wants Top Notch products for under $100. I'll also bet his business is restoring old radio's and record players so of course that's why he want's you to do that. I bought one for one reason, and one reason only. I wanted to make C.Ds from my very large vinyl record collection. It did exactly what it was supposed to do I had 30 days to return it if it failed to do this. I can play the vinyl record once, make a C.D. from it, and preserve my vinyl record. I can play the C.D. on my computer, or my combo d.v.d/ c.d. player When I buy something I don't take it apart and take all the parts out. If I just wanted to play records, I already had a turntable connected to my stereo system, which also has a radio.

The one I have I got at a Thrift Store. Works rather well actually. It's a Crosley. So it's not perfect. Anyone expecting it out of ANY brand that is sold in stores gets what you pay for. I got mine on a half price day for about $13. They are not designed for heavy use. If anyone is after listening to it full time it's not for that. If anyone is after listening to LP's again. Get a regular turntable and then get a RCA to USB converter. Don't buy the new USB ready turntables. The older standard turntables use standard needles.

Excuse me, but i think you should invest in a higher quality recording device. I'm afraid your flip phone just isn't cutting it. You're obviously biased against vintage items being reproduced, you should feel honored that young people take interest in the same type of technology that you most likely used at their age. And if we wanted to buy CD players or obtain the music digitally, we would. It's terribly easy. Maybe you just got a lousy record player, so don't bash on everybody's brand.

+radiotvphononut hey I have a Crosley record player, but it's not one of these cheap reproductions, it's from the '70s. However, it spins my records a bit too fast. Is there any way to fix that?
@shaunw92708 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Graziano Yes there is. Back in the day most cheap record players were actually designed to last so adjustment is possible. If it is belt - retension the belt or replace it . Direct drive ? On my old 70's Fidelity, it came with detailed instructions on how to adjust to the required speed by ear. In a professional workshop they would have stuck a piece of reflective tape to the edge of the turntable and fired an automotive timing light at it so displaying the RPM . This was quite common back in the day so chances are if you have a local Tv or Radio repair man in the area , it should not cost much to do properly.
@ohger19 жыл бұрын
Any vintage radio/phono restored to the level that it can be used daily will cost 5 to 10X the cost of one of these "junks", and still require vacuum tube replacements periodically as well as phonograph maintenance. If the owner of one of these did manage to have a problem with it, they could replace it with a new one and still be way ahead of the game. And these are no more hard on records than most vintage turntables. If that thing tracks at 15 grams I'll eat the thing. I doubt the whole arm weighs 15 grams much less track at that force.
@aidanmontgomery97729 жыл бұрын
ohger1 Vintage equipment can go years without "maintence", these junk crosleys DO ruin records and can't even last much longer than 2 years without dying. There are still way better modern options then these crappy crosley/reproduction tunrtables, for example Technics. All you are doing is trying to act smart on a subject you know nothing about.
@ohger19 жыл бұрын
Aidan Montgomery They rarely went years without maintenance even when they were new. I know, I sold them.. Back then, manufacturers didn't provide a labor warranty, only parts. The selling dealer (us) would have to repair the item on our time.
@Musicradio77Network6 жыл бұрын
I was at Barnes & Noble a few days ago, and I saw one of the Crosley's, but this one is a C100 turntable, and that one is a much better improvement than any of the crappy Crosley turntables. I've seen people reviewed the Crosley C100 turntable, and it is a Technics SL-1200 clone. The sound quality looks good, and the speakers are nice. This is where Crosley takes another direction at producing the C100 series turntable, but we'll give Crosley credit for the most popular turntables ever made.

Thanks for your commentary and demonstration here. I always looked at these retro things with a suspicious eye. I was in the repair business from about '74 up to the early to mid '90s, when I felt I was beginning to spin my wheels trying to make a living at this. The public can't be dissuaded from this flashy trash, and will scorn my fee and throw away the old stuff and buy the new stuff. What really blows me away is how much they are charging for these Crosleys, etc...

My Dad bought me a cheap Chinese made multi band radio, It looks really cool on the outside but I ended up modifying it because the sound was so crappy. I disconnected the built-in audio amp and made a separate one with a decent power output, replaced the speaker with a higher wattage and decent sized magnet and upgraded the transformer with a much better power rating including the diodes and caps associated with it. Now it sounds awesome, Since I already had most of the parts including the transformer, I don't have to spend that much but it was worth it. You really can't tell an items quality unless you have knowledge of it's inner workings.
@direct78broadcast267 жыл бұрын
rene kenshin are you an idiot he showed us the internals so you can judge the item from this video as he clearly showed his knowledge of these as can I. I repair gramophones, record players and valve radios and even the cheap ones are nearly always salvageable after at least 50 years of service I regularly listen to my 1947 Marconi t21a radio and it need the wax caps replacing that's it , I mean it worked anyway just had a loud hum and after repairs it has been going for 3 years and it's already 69 years old and most likely won't stop for another 69 years. You have just proven your ignorance to the quality of electronics either because you are in denial about the western world being dependant on badly made Chinese goods or you have absolutely no experience with vintage electronics and their superior build quality to their modern counter parts.
@renekenshin65737 жыл бұрын
Direct78 Broadcast The fuck are you talking about? What's idiotic about improving some Chinese low quality crap. I can improve it if I wanted too since I have knowledge in electronics. Keep your opinions to yourself.
@direct78broadcast267 жыл бұрын
rene kenshin you said "you can't tell an items quality if you don't know it's internals" well he shows you how crude their construction is and modifying one just so it works properly doesn't create a high quality item, although I respect you for carrying out repairs yourself but your statement is completely wrong.
@renekenshin65737 жыл бұрын
Direct78 Broadcast My dad bought me that thing for crying out loud -.- He can't tell a good sound quality yet he bought it because of the cosmetics. I only modified it because I don't like how it sounds. Improving it doesn't require knowledge of vintage electronics since this thing uses modern electronics inside lol. I'm not even aiming for a high quality item, I think you're confused lmao

Since I had been playing vinyl for so long, now I can listen to CD’s. Since I still have my 8-in-1 stereo system by “Crapola” (Victrola), I did transfer from vinyl to MP3’s and burn onto a CD so I can play them. Since I don’t have any space in my room, all I do is start with my own CD collection. I had been collecting CD’s so many years, so I decided to start over from scratch.

I bought a 1962 Magnavox portable. (Magnavox is no longer what it used to be, as a lot of it was pretty decent quality at the time) Anyhow, I bought this at around 2013, it was a decent set, and still is. It worked when I got it, and it sounded... AMAZING. It still sounds Amazing. It needed recapped, not gonna lie, but it worked great with the original EICO caps in it. (Made before the Nichicon capacitor switch) This IS a transistorized, stereo set with the Micromatic/Collaro changer in it (though I like tubes bc germanium transistors are iffy). On the flip side of that, my step father got into records because of me being into them. He bought a NICE turntable at around the same time. I can't recall what brand, but I just remember he payed mega dollars for it. With the cartridge and stylus that came with it, it sounded great with his also mega bucks amplifier setup. He had big Bose speakers, as I recall them to be, which sounded nice. His problem started at the turntable itself. He bought belt driven, I tried warning him, but nobody listens to the guy who likes the "old junk". He ordered a new belt... twice. Directly after he installed the second belt, he noticed an intermittence in the volume. He just left it go until the next day. When he started his system all up, he had no audio. It got to the point to where he wanted me to try and fix it. It was definitely somewhere in his audio amplifier equipment, but I opened it up and it was kinda like radiotvphononut when he tried his hand at that Samsung tv that just clicked. It was NOT service friendly AT ALL, so I refused. He was past the warranty that i'm surprised it even had, so he had wasted literally thousands on what, two or three years. I'm not saying this happens to all new systems. This is just a personal experience. As for my ol' Maggie portable set, it sounds almost console like, and it still works just fine. In the 50's and 60's Magnavox had a 10 year warranty, on just the stylus. Even my stylus outlived its warranty. I paid 20 dollars for my set, though I had to be patient enough to find it. I don't think there are very many items built to last anymore. That's my solid opinion. I include modern cars into this junk too. Safety is all those are good for, otherwise they're a rolling computer. (that's the price tag) Those computers can be hazards themselves. I'll rant about those somewhere else though.
